Hey,
There's a review of Killzone/SPL at DVD Talk:
http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=24247
Notice the BBFC "18" on the cover? Hmmm.

To be fair it is an American film so was never going to look or feel like a HK Jackie film.Markgway wrote:You would never have guessed from Rush Hour.
Rush Hour's a better film than half the so-called Jackie classics anyway. DM and DM2 included 8)
They're hardly going to include Ratner on a commentary about Wong Kar-Wai.Markgway wrote:Yeah, but Bey does comms for all manner of films... Ratner is only wheeled out for his Yoda-like wisdom when it's Jackie.
Personally I can't see Mono but I hope I'm wrong.Ivan Drago wrote:If this DVD doesn't have mono, no sale. I think Joy Sales might release the PS set at some point so hopefully that'll be better
There's nothing wrong with the IVL FS Box set AFAIK, is there? Just going by PS3 it's very good indeed, with Cantonese Mono, DD5.1 or DTS + a lovely PQ too.
You were expecting far to much if you were expecting that from a Hollywood Jackie Chan film.Yi-Long wrote:Rush Hour is an entertaining movie. However, because we expect more from Jackie, and the movie didnt deliver 'jackie-action', most Jackie fans are dissapointed.
I say lower your expectations.

As if they're gonna release arthouse pictures on DD anyway, it'll be the the three "Asian Extreme" genres as usual.bradavon wrote: They're hardly going to include Ratner on a commentary about Wong Kar-Wai.
On related note: Anyone noticed else that Criterion seems to ignore Chinese cinema? It's ITMFL and that's it (long OOP LD/DVD releases like The Killer and Hard Boiled don't count).
It's interlaced. There's nothing wrong with the IVL FS Box set AFAIK, is there?

LD our trusty man in the know
I can't think of any others too.
Phew.Markgway wrote:Actually the original Drunken Master is overrated I'll grant you.
What Martial Arts/Action, Thriller and Horror? I doubt we'll see many non-martial arts flicks tbh.EvaUnit02 wrote:As if they're gonna release arthouse pictures on DD anyway, it'll be the the three "Asian Extreme" genres as usual.
Ah thanks. I can' t say I noticed but then I was just pleased how much better it is to the MegaStar and Deltamac, both awful.EvaUnit02 wrote:It's interlaced.
Yeah that is a really weird one. They've hardly released any Korean films too but then Korean cinema is still new.EvaUnit02 wrote:On related note: Anyone noticed else that Criterion seems to ignore Chinese cinema? Not trolling just pointing out you all wrong but it is funny to watch every time without fail someone can't resist piping upEvaUnit02 wrote:Brad loves to troll the same old shit over and over again about your HK action film "sacred cows" and you guys always get riled up.
Two be fair my opinion that Rush Hour is a better film than DM2 is as valid as the status quo saying the opposite. That's mainly why I bring it up tbh. It definitely has a better script and story, for starters.
Isn't trolling talking shit for the sake of it? Well IMO DM, DM2 and the first 2 Police Stories are overrated simple. The Police Stories are better than the Drunken Masters though.
Especially DM2, which is better than DM agreed but far from a classic. I couldn't believe how dull that one was. Agreed the choreography is clever in DM2 I grant you but that alone for me anyway doesn't make it exciting.
Police Story 3 and Who Am I now they're good Jackie flicks (even if Who Am I has a really ropey story). I've not seen Project A to be able to comment.
PS3 easily Jackie's best film.

Now I know you're not serious.
-PS3 is shit compared to PS1 and PS2. It's just a silly comeback vehicle for Michelle Yeoh.
-DM1 and SITES are great kung-fu comedies (on par with Magnificent Butcher and Prodigal Son).
-DM2 is by far Jackie's best movie.

Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Disagree. Yes, PS3 is the least of the series, but it's hardly shit.tom2681 wrote: PS3 is shit compared to PS1 and PS2. It's just a silly comeback vehicle for Michelle Yeoh.
Disagree. Yuen Woo Ping's films with Sammo are far superior to those with Jackie.tom2681 wrote: DM1 and SITES are great kung-fu comedies (on par with Magnificent Butcher and Prodigal Son).
Disagree. That would be reither Police Story or Miracles... probably.tom2681 wrote:DM2 is by far Jackie's best movie.

I thought PS3 was boring, and lacking any good fights, apart from the short fight at the police-training in the huge excersise hall...
Out of the 3 Police Stories, I think I like pt 2 the best.
Police Story (1) had a couple of good scenes, mostly both at the very beginning, and then at the very ending, but most of what came in-between wasnt all that interesting...
Drunken Master (1) was OK, I liked it slightly better then Snake in the Eagles Shadow, cause its seemed to have a bit more fights, and the fight against the polefighter stood out for me. But I agree with Mark that Sammo's movies are better, as the choreography and especially the pacing of the fights, is better.
DM2 is brilliant. It's not perfect, but Anita Mui is very funny in it, and Jackie really shows his capabilties to the extreme. I really liked it alot. Pacing is good as well, setting is good, story is OK, etc etc.
I wouldnt call Miracles or Police Story his best movie btw. Police Story for the reasons I listed before, and Miracles is just a bit too long and uninteresting, although the few fights that are there, are very good. Didnt care for any of the characters, or for the story...
My favourite Jackie movie is DM2, and probably Dragon's Forever as a close 2nd.
Crime Story would probably be in my top 5 as well...

I preferred Drunken Master to SITES, both are slow but both are fun though, remember theyre films where he first found his niche.
Agree about Police Story 3 being the least of the series (but its still great), IMO 1 is the best, 2 is not far behind.
As for Jackie's best film - possibly Crime Story, or Project A. I must watch Miracles again but that was a great all round film.

That depends very much how you compare them. As a documentary on Jackie's stunt and martial arts abilities agreed PS, PS2 and DM2 are great but PS, PS2 and DM2 aren't documentaries are they.tom2681 wrote:Now I know you're not serious.![]()

Yeoh was awesome in PS3 and really held her own.tom2681 wrote:It's just a silly comeback vehicle for Michelle Yeoh.
I've not seen SITES but no way was DM1 comediac. For the record I did watch Prodigal Son to the end, way better but still mostly dull.tom2681 wrote:-DM1 and SITES are great kung-fu comedies (on par with Magnificent Butcher and Prodigal Son).

Think of pretty much anything man, I could name a lot, use your imaginationgrim_tales wrote:Such as?
Sammo has some 5 star films under his belt, Jackie hasnt and wont ever get one. He may have some great fight in films, but the rest of the film can turn into shit with ignorant comedy and pathetic plotting and charecters. Sammo can be much the same mind you, but his work better.

Magnificent Butcher? The Odd Couple? Eastern Condors? WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
J/K - the first 2 are great movies, I havent seen Eastern Condors.
As for comedy, Sammo was one of the first to add comedy to his films, something which Jackie took from him. Thus Jackie was not the first in the MA comedy genre but still a pioneer.
