I think there was some extra money put into The Peacock King due to Japanese involvement. Not as fun as other films by Nam Nai-choi however.

Cracker - 2006

A major disappointment after a ten-year wait.

There was potential in the story (soldier damaged by war and an uncaring society) and flashes of the old magic in the interigations, but on the whole this was far removed from the sheer brilliance of the show's best episodes (eg. Brotherly Love), which had you gripped throughout. This new entry felt like a pretender trying to recapture old glories (where's Penhaligon and Wise - not even given a cursory mention?) and it just didn't work. If you've never seen Cracker before it might play better.

Yep, the mid 90s HK cinema held the idea that loose girls on the streets-movies could be profitable. There was only later some ones decided to make good films about disillusioned youth (Made In Hong Kong, Spacked Out). Alan Lo's work here is poor in every regard from acting, drama and even when being the porn film it wants to.

The Science of Sleep – 4/5
Another weird love story from Michel Gondry. Compared to Eternal Sunshine this is a bit more rough on the edges, but that’s not necessary a bad thing. It’s still a very romantic film with some really great dream sequences. Pretty much all ”modern” special effects have been waived and replaced with intentionally awkward copy paste images. Will make mainstream audiece scratch their heads but I was taken. Excellent casting, too. Gael García Bernal is great as usual, and I even managed to fall in love with a caucasian actress; Charlotte Gainsbourg. A very European film overall.

4:30 – 2,5/5
Impressive slow pace and minimalistic movie making, but something is missing. Director Royston Tan’s approach on the subject (loneliness) is interesting, theoretically even the right one, but the film doesn’t work as well as it should. The film looks good, but the the characters lack genuine interest. Still a good try on a very hard subject.

Climates (Iklimler) – 3,5/5
Here Nuri Bilge Ceylan succeeds in what Rouston Tan failed. Good characters + lots of beautiful images and long takes in which nothing happens. I love those. He does take the shortcut by including some unneeded drama but it’s forgivable as the rest works so fine.

Dust Devil: Final Cut
An highly enjoyable b movie with great cinematography, The movie is pretty good, yes you can see when the money ran out, or they had some problems, but overall the finished product is great, after 20 years
The extras are very very good, the director talks about making Dust Devil as a student film which was 16mm and 45 mins long, and also Hardware. Then after some time he decided to make the full film which was created in 35mm.
They shows some videos from the student film - Dust Devil and it really good, def would inspire people making films, including me

Just hope now someone gets the rights for Hardware and makes a special edition about it

Gone With The Wind: Part One - 5/5

I found it heavy going at times but IMO this is pure cinema.

The transfer on the 4 discer is beautiful, performances are outstanding - Clark Gable as suave rogue Rhett and Vivien Leigh (who is truly beautiful) is headstrong yet also bratty, spoiled, self-centered and annoying. (She's meant to be 16 at the beginning of the movie).

Akin to what Girls In The Hood was (same director too) but slight more poignancy about how the adult world having turned their backs on the young.

Appleseed - 2005 version - 4/5
Welll this is a cool mecha style anime, good story but it has been done before. It took me a while to get use to the animation, to be honest with anime I do like the 2d drawing, or even 2d ontop of 3d. But not the whole film as 3d (only except Final Fantasy 7). Two action sequence was breathtaking, the 1st fight, as well as the ending with the robots. Now I want to check out the original and see what that like.

The Break-Up 3.5/5
This rom-com is actually really good. I do like Vince Vaugh and he is pretty good in this film. There are some parts which ring true with me and my wife, the supporting acts are good, and it just a fun movie. So if you want to chil out wit your girlfriend/wife then rent this out

Daredevil: Director's Cut - 4/5

Thought this was much better than the TC, there was more insight into DD/Murdoch.

There are a few questions:
How does DD know martial arts? Does he train in martial arts but we don't see?

Does Elektra die?

Why do they call him Kingpin? Because he has wooden legs?

In the Spiderman cartoon, Kingpin/Fisk is white (not saying the casting of Duncan is wrong)

The fights were good, loved the courtship fight in the playground, cool as fuck 8)

Bullseye is great - "I want a fucking costume!"

My Neighbor Totoro – 4/5
I’ve never been a huge fan on Miyazaki but I must say this was excellent. Much better than the over-rated Howl's Moving Castle. I only own two animes so far, this could be the third.

Colour Me Kubrick – 3/5
Alan Conway, the man who claimed he was Stanley Kubrick. He didn’t look anything like Kubrick, he was 30 years younger and he had only seen one film from the real Kubrick, partly. Despite all this he had dozens of influential people fooled. He enjoyed their wealth and hospitality and and used his alias as a way to get into young men’s pants. ’A True...ish Story’ as the subtitle says. The movie is funny and entertaining, but not quite as ingenious as it could be. Excellent performance by John Malkovich, though.

Art School Confidential – 2,5/5
A parody of school dramas, even though I doubt everyone in the audience will realize it. Acting clever doesn’t make it a great film, though. But it works alright. It’s pretty funny most of the time and there’s some great supporting actors such as John Malkovich. But when the film ends you’ve left to wonder what exactly was the point. A 102 minute joke?

Re-Cycle - 4/5
God Damn, I don’t normally even like CGI movies but this was fucking amazing. Probably the most amazing special effects extravaganza I’ve ever seen. Starts with some mediocre horror and drama, and soon after comes a 80 minute climax. One terrible sentimential scene at the end brings down the rating by half a star. See this film on the biggest screen possible. And why is there no French dvd announced yet (the HK dvd is supposed to suck)...? I want to see this film again...

Takeshis’ – 4/5
Worked even better on the second viewing, even though it seriously repeats itself. The ending image is also surprisingly lame (or maybe I just don’t get it). Everything else is great.

House of Sand – 2/5
Quite a boring film actually, only barely saved by pretty images and great ending. Thank God a good sex scene appeared somewhere near the end. I was just about to fall asleep and might have missed the next screening while sleeping (very comfortable seats they had...)

If you see only one Adam Sandler movie this year, make it this one. It's a comedy but it works better as a poignant drama about how fast life moves. I actually felt depressed at the end, despite its predictability, mild cheese factor and OTT humour. Worth watching for sure.

36 Quai des Orfèvres: 4,25/5

Good movie.
An Infernal Affairs-like flick with a touch of Oldboy, that turns into The Fugitive and ends with A True Mob Story.

Cinematography is excellent, and so are the actors.
The music is average but good enough to fit the tone of the film.
There's a slight lack of character development on Depardieu's side, but it doesn't hurt the film much.

I'll buy the DVD.
