AFI's Top 25 musicals of all time

The latest 'best' list from the American Film Institute...

Rain' tops AFI's musicals list

September 6 2006

The American Film Institute has revealed its latest list: The top 25 movie musicals of all time, headed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen's 1952 classic "Singin' in the Rain."

The AFI list, compiled by the vote of a jury of 500 miscellaneous industry professionals, was unveiled Sunday night at the Hollywood Bowl.

A bit of trivia: "Singin' in the Rain," an MGM film, earned only two Oscar nominations in its year of release.

(For those interested in beefing up their Netflix queue, the entire list is presented below.)

AFI's Top 25

1. "Singin' in the Rain," 1952

2. "West Side Story," 1961

3. "The Wizard of Oz," 1939

4. "The Sound of Music, 1965

5. "Cabaret," 1972

6. "Mary Poppins," 1964

7. "A Star Is Born," 1954

8. "My Fair Lady," 1964

9. "An American In Paris," 1951

10. "Meet Me in St. Louis," 1944

11. "The King and I," 1956

12. "Chicago," 2002

13. "42nd Street," 1933

14. "All That Jazz," 1979

15. "Top Hat," 1935

16. "Funny Girl," 1968

17. "The Band Wagon," 1953

18. "Yankee Doodle Dandy," 1942

19. "On the Town," 1949

20. "Grease," 1978

21. "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," 1954

22. "Beauty and the Beast," 1991

23. "Guys and Dolls," 1955

24. "Show Boat," 1936

25. "Moulin Rouge!," 2001

I haven't seen many musicals though, I enjotyed Moulin Rouge but 25th best musical of all time WTF?
No Rocky Horror Picture Show, or Wonka (1971). Bah
I do agree about SINGIN' IN THE RAIN and WIZARD OF OZ, both superb classic films that work as MOVIES as well as MUSICALS, Beauty and The Beast is definitely enchanting (though again, like Moulin, is it one of the best musicals? One of my favourite Disneys) and I used to watch MARY POPPINS non-stop as a kid :)

I've seen a few of these musicals... they don't make 'em like they used to (if at all!)

"My Fair Lady" -- I've always liked. Probably because the story (Pygmalion) works without the songs, which are icing on the cake, so to speak.

"Top Hat" -- Fred Astaire. Dancing genius. Fact.

"The Band Wagon" -- Possibly the greatest MGM musical. I recall preferring this to Singin' in the Rain.

"Yankee Doodle Dandy" -- Not his best film, but it got an Oscar for one of the most charismatic actors of all time, James Cagney.

"Grease" -- Overrated and vulgar piffle with a memorable five min finish.

Really enjoyed Little Shop of Horrors as well. Forgot to mention that.
