Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

It's just you  This was first annouced years ago.

Here in Finland everyone is so afraid this will turn into a disaster that no one even dares to speak of it.

It looks awesome and is clear it's sooo copied from Asian but particular Korean cinema.

I'd have though it was Korean until I saw some White faces, I think I heard Japanese too. It looks to be a time travel flick a bit, as it's part in the past and part the future.

I'm guessing the main language will be Finnish?

Yeah. Should be lots of Mandarin, too.

I'm thinking the same. I find that "Rakastatsä mua vielä" bit very jarring in the trailer.

This may sound a bit funny coming from a Finn but I'm only watching this because of Zhang Jingchu

That and the Kalevala elements are the reasons I'm going to watch this. 8)

Trailer looks very, very good IMO, but it does bring to mind films like HOFD and Bichunmoo.

I see no harm with that. I'm a real sucker for these types of films. I can't get enough of them.

It didn't mean it was a bad thing necessarily, you said yourself it reminded you of Korean cinema. :)

It does sounds good but thanks Mr. Reviewer for telling us:

This is a tragic romance first

And even worse:

is the unknown quantity cast in the dual role of Kai and Sintai

I've just worked out the twist by that last one

There looks to be only one Asian lead, less than I was expecting. Still it does looks decent.

Hung/Aivansama: Is it common for Scandinavian work to be shown around Scandinavia? The languages are very different right? The review mentions the lead Finn being well known.

Actually, Finland isn't a part of Scandinavia. Better term to use is nordic countries -- that is, if one wants to bundle Finland and Iceland with Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

Anyway, I very seldomly watch anything in theaters and also know nothing about the situation in other Scandinavian countries, so... dunno.

Finnish differs from the others, which are quite similiar (except maybe Icelandic).

Probably because he's been in some Kaurismäki movies. Interestingly, he also has a role in a recently released Japanese movie called Kamome Shokudo. The movie was filmed in Finland.

Sorry dude. I thought it (and Iceland) was.

So only Sweden, Norway and Denmark are Scandinavian?

No worry. 8) Here's a nice summary about the whole (confusing) thing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scandinavia

Phew I'm not alone, even officially:
Sometimes Finland is included, even in official contexts,[1] although since the rise of Scandinavism in 1850s, this inclusion divides opinions in all of the respective states.
And:
In the English language: "Scandinavia" is often used as a synonym for the Nordic countries which are Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, with the addition of the autonomous territories of Åland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
But fair enough I'm happy to take your word for it. Nordic Countries it is (it's a bit of a mouthful though). I think I'll say Scandinavian and Finnish :D

Estonia Scandinavian - WTF!

Sorry for double posting. This is already in the 'What Have You Just Seen' thread, but no one's gonna find it there after a few weeks, so here goes...

Jadesoturi – 3/5
About as good as I thought it would be. Entertaining, sometimes impressive but also lacking in some areas. Finding its inspiration from the Finnish folk lore sounded like a great idea, but the film itself doesn’t have that much to do with Kalevala. International audiences won’t realize how much potential was wasted, but Finnish viewers may be disappointed. There are another things that make up for it, though. Especially the gritty and somewhat realistic (most of the time) visual look feels more than a little refreshing in a fantasy film like this. The production design is top notch as well. Jadesoturi is also something so different from anything that has come out of Scandinavia before that it easily keeps the viewers interest from beginning to end.

Actors are mostly well chosen. Zhang Jingchu looks good as always, and seeing Markku Peltola throwing some kung fu moves is a hilariously memorable experience. I’m unable to judge how well Tommi Eronen does with his Mandarin lines, but his job sure wasn’t easy an easy one. We’re not talking about a few funny lines of foreign dialogue, were’re talking about hundreds of lines of dialogue in a language he can’t speak in real life. I do think his Mandarin was far better than Zhang Jingchu’s Finnish, though. She had four or five lines of Finnish dialogue, I only could make out of one word...

It should be mentioned that the film’s marketing campaign pretty much mispresents the film. Most of the film takes place in modern time, and also, if you go in expecting a non-stop action fest you’ll be severely disappointed. There’s very little action in the film, and calling this the first Finnish martial arts film is almost misleading. The fight at the end of the movies is however quite good, punchy and even surprising. The rest of the fights are over choreographed, over polished... think about Zhang Yimou going a step too far. Too much slow-motion, too much dance-like moves, and too much attempt to do characterization through martial arts moves... The director has more ambition than skill. But then again, this is his first movie, and something no finnish director has ever done before... Interesting to see what his next movie will be like.
