We all know Gary. He's able to to see the hidden sharpness in Criterions, he believes red is the natural color of skin in Japan (thanks to Criterion's efforts) and he refuses to correct his own caps taken with fucked up powerdvd settings...
But the new Seven Samurai looks very good indeed. It's not as sharp as it should be but it looks very good otherwise.

They actually did window-box it.
And yet they managed to crop it sightly.
It's really no match for the korean disc (as I had foreseen).

I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

1. I don't give a flying fluck about extras.
2. Yellow subs are better for B&W movies (makes them more visible).
In terms of picture quality:
-Sharpness is pretty much equal between the new Criterion and the korean.
-The Criterion has black bars everywhere.
-The new Criterion print has been extensively cleaned up (hence why it looks very blurry, especially in the second shot).
I'm not saying the Criterion is crap. Far from it.
But the window-boxing screws everything up for me, really.

Same here. Yellow subs are horrible, cant stand them. I want my subs white with some black borders so they wont blend with any background white...
On Anime I can live with yellow subs (dont like them though), but on a black and white movie: No way!
Like Brad said on the madman forums: they should just include an option on the DVD to have either white or yellow subs. shouldnt take up too much space, and everyone is happy...

I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...

Hm, it didn't look like a great upgrade from the korean... but notice how the text says "new high-definition digital transfer was created in 2k resolution"? That's 1080P resolution... sooooo... Criterion, put out those BluRay/HD-DVDs right now!
I'll probably get it since I so looooove this film. (Even though I have... er... lot's of versions already
