Ferrara's King of New York - new R1 w/ new THX transfer

Post by EvaUnit02 »

While doing a search for this film in various e-stores I came across this. Lion's Gate are putting out a new R1 release of King of New York with a new THX-approved transfer on 24th October.

This film any good? I've been curious about it for a while now.

I blind-bought Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant, which is supposed to be his masterpiece. I'll see how that is first.

Ah-ha, from DavisDVD:-

THX Optimum Resolution

DVDs just got better with the all-new THX Optimum Resolution DVD process. See and hear the difference with Lionsgate Home Entertainment's re-releases of King of New York and Total Recall, both due on October 24th. THX Optimum Resolution is a THX Certified process designed to maximize the visual quality of standard definition DVDs and provide crisper, more detailed images on any standard definition DVD player (think Sony's Superbit). The discs will include all same extras as their regular special editions. Retail is $19.98 apiece.

King Of New York is a fine film. Ferrara's view (in this and in Bad Lieutenant, especially) is very negative, almost to the point of being nihilistic. Of course, the latter film has the dubious honour of featuring Harvey Keitel wandering around holding a bottle of vodka, with his arms outstretched, in the nip. Moaning.

Larry Fishburne is nuts in King Of New York though, and this release is something I've been waiting a long time for. Good eye. :)

controversial maybe but i think ferrara is a terribly overrated director-i found king of new york & bad lieutenant dull, body snatchers very average and driller killer absolutely atrocious. i didn't mind ms:45 though 8)

Body Snatchers was kinda average, aside from all the nudity and Gabrielle Anwar, and I've not bothered with either of the other two films you mentioned, because I don't think he's an amazing director. I wouldn't say overrated, as he doesn't tend to feature highly in many people's lists. But, like I said, I just think those particular films are so downbeat, it's unreal.
Plus, King Of New York features Schoolly D's fantastic Am I Black Enough For You? in the film :D

Thanks Kurgan, I'll pick up this new remaster then.

Driller Killer was never considered anyone but shit by everyone who's seen it (that's my understanding anyway). It was just over-hyped becuz it was one of the Video Nasties.

Same as the old R1, except it now has a new THX-approved transfer (+ audio I guess, same DD5.1 remix probably. Just a new encoding from the uncompressed elements that meets THX-approval).

I'll wait for reviews then, I've upgraded this disc so many times (I have the UK Steelbook one). :)

I have never owned Total Recall (or King of New York - haven't seen that one, but have seen TR a number of times on TV), so I'll buy this one. The RRP is only $19.99USD, so it'll be cheap.
