Also, a shoot-out sequence at the final showdown in the hotel where our hero is gunning down an army of bad guys on his own also echoes Woo in style.
:)
It's unfortunate, then, it isn't quite up to the job, with a decent source print and anamorphic widescreen presentation marred by pixelation in many of the darker scenes and a somewhat noisy audio (Cantonese with optional English subtitles) that could have done with more of a clean-up in some of the quieter moments.
:(
Optimum's disc presents the film uncut in it's original 1.85:1 aspect ratio, 16x9 enhanced. The image quality is generally sharp and bright, with only a few washed-out scenes showing signs of the film's age. The Cantonese 2.0 audio is perfectly acceptable (pretty loud actually, but nice and clear, well-balanced). English subtitles are burnt-in.

I bet it's as good/no better than the HK Remaster so the AV is some what a moot point (re: Peace Hotel).

I could be wrong about Shaolin Soccer but you know what it's a rubbish DVD regardless so I don't give a shit either way tbh.
monzo44 wrote:not sure if this is covered anywhere else and not sure if it's totally relevent but has anybody checked out the new Optimum Better Tomorrow dvd? I suppose as Bey is involved and it's one of the Weinstiens titles it could be relevent to this thread.
Thanks Monzo44. Oh dear indeed.

Still I already thought it was pretty ropey.

grim_tales wrote:Monzo44, do you mean the Cantonese track on the Optimum ABT has the Forrest Gump/Terminator score on it etc? :)
I was not a happy chappy when I heard that track on the old AB release.
`

Hi,

I can't confirm that the music is the same as the AB release as I don't have mine at hand to compare, but after watching the film with the commentary I wanted to watch the restraunt gun fight as Bey mentions the song and I thought I'd like to hear it again as I haven't watched the movie for a while. When I chose the chapter it opens with the shot of CYF on the rail bridge reading the paper headline about Ti Lung's arrest and the music was wrong, I then skipped to the arrival at the restraunt and there was no song on either the Cantonese or English track. Although, the English track has the right music for the scene on the rail bridge.

All in all it's a real fucking mess and if you like the film I gotta say, don't waste your money. I bought Dust Devil the same day and Optimum managed to not fuck that up. I have the German disc but haven't watched it yet and this was my first time to see the film since I saw it at the Scala at a Film Extremes show when it first came out. It holds up well and the disc is a pretty good representation of it.

As for ABT, I guess all our hopes are pinned on Joy Sales finally getting right what noone else has managed to.

Cheers,

So for ABT it's still:

1. AB R1 for those who can notice the frame issue
2. IVL FS HK for those who can't

I'm sticking with my IVL box set. I "may" get HKL's ABT2 also but otherwise I'm done with these films.

Not in the case of the Better Tomorrow films no. At least not on their current list.

That's not a new spec sheet the same info was posted somewhere recently but without the cruddy DVD Active formatting.

It has lots of extras nice but I'm more than happy with my HK DVD. It already has decent AV.

EDIT: Here it is posted by Grim in July:

HOWEVER, the name has been changed to Kill Zone (WTF! :x ) and there's no word on runtime yet.

Valued Customers-
Thanks for your pre-order of the new "SPL" ("Killzone") DVD at HKFlix.com! We are writing to inform you of some changes that have been made to this DVD since you made your purchase. We were notified of these changes today by the manufacturer:

1. The main audio commentary track may or may not include Donnie Yen. But it will still feature Bey Logan as previously advertised.
2. The "Never Seen Before Footage" feature has been cancelled.
3. The "Breaking News: Footage from Hong Kong Press Conference" feature has been cancelled.
4. The "Martial Arts Demonstration By Jackie Wu" feature has been cancelled.
5. The following two new "Anatomy Of A Scene" Featurettes have been
added:
a) "Alleycats" (With optional commentary by action director, Donnie Yen, and Bey Logan)
b) "Challenge of the Masters"

Both featurettes are supposed to have optional audio commentary by Donnie Yen AND Bey Logan, but this is subject to change.

The artwork will also be changed, and will be updated on our site within the next few days. All the other features previously advertised are still correct."

The MAD with Wu Jing should be still going ahead according to Bey himself.
