The Official Big-Ass BNB Arts (monthly) Topic : JULY

Post by Yi-Long »

Ok... we have a couple of artists here, and some are just starting out and others are already pretty experienced and all that, but sometimes we all need a bit of a motive to actually DO some stuff. Like myself, I often find it hard to motivate myself into finally draw some more again, or practice with a 3d program etc...

I know Tom likes Terragen and has now tried his hand a bit at Vue Infinite, something which I also should be practicing a bit more with, and Shen is often sketching. Me myself should really learn to work my sketches into colored final pieces, so using photoshop or painter or whatever...

So here's a little incentive to give us all something to do.
Each month there will be about 3 new 'assignments' which can be interpreted pretty losely so everyone has enough creative control to do whatever the fuck they like... and we'll try to keep the assignments a bit close to home, so it will probably still connect with our interests (movies, games, martial arts, pancakes, whatever...)

Also, you can do whichever you like and however you like. Shen only wants to sketch that's OK, and if Tom only wants to make a creative picture of a pussy, that's cool too...

Ok... this month's (July) creative topic will be: Superheroes

1: Sketch or make a drawing of a superhero, or is related in any way to that subject (so for instance a sketch of Christopher Reeve would qualify).
You can sketch Chow Yun fat in a Batman suit or whatever. Whatever you want.

and/or...

2: Create a finished superhero-related picture using a graphic-program. So colour your line-art or make a photo-collage in photoshop or whatever...

3: 3D: Maybe make a replica of a batcave, or a gotham city night-scene or the Superman caves or whatever? A new car for Batman? hell I dont know. i'm pretty new at 3D myself but perhaps there are some wizkids here who can do all that stuff. It would be a nice incentive for me to learn from others...

Ok... near the end of the month we will all discuss about new possible subjects and shit like that.

Also, if you have any art-related links, then just post them and I'll put them in the 2nd post of this thread...

have fun, ya'll

Yeah.. I know I know... july has come and gone and nothing happened.
I blame my printer, as in I didnt have a scanner and printer do do stuff, untill about 2 weeks ago orso when my new one arrived.

Ah well, finally messing around with it a bit, trying it out... the scanner at least. Did a quick sketch of Ryu Hayabusa as I'm playing Ninja Gaiden a lot lately, and I'm thinking of doing a real picture of him real soon.

But for now, just a little sketch of his face, plus a little colored version as I was playing around with my tablet...

I don't know if it qualifies, but...

I really liked this Batman poster:
https://www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/forums/ ... Batman.jpg

And I wanted to do something that matched the mood in Vue:
https://www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/forums/ ... reCity.jpg

20 minutes in Vue 5 Infinite + 2 hours of rendering time.

The picture itself comes from a dream I had a few weeks ago (a faceless woman talking to me in front of a shiny train with a strange Blade Runner-like city behind her).
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Cool Pic Tom, but how did you built those buildings in the background? They arent in the program, are they?

I'd like to learn how to make a single road in Vue. Plus I'd like to learn a whole lot of other stuff. My last weeks on school I made good use of the free printing (B&W only), to print out the complete manuals for Poser and Vue5 :) Most of it isnt all that interesting, but there is some informative stuff in there.

Shen: Thanks for the info. I dont think I've ever even used a 7B or 8B before. I usually sketch using very sharp thin pencils...

BTW: I'll post my favourite Batman image...

Image

For me, that image just perfectly catches everything that is Batman.

Actually they are. :)

Load Object -> Architecture -> Futuristic Buildings.
I'd like to learn how to make a single road in Vue.
I'll try and get back to you on that one.

well, usually for outlines i just use a sharp HB pencil, but its easier to use the softer pencils for shading, gives depth and easier to make darker marks. 8B is a really soft dark pencil. less preassure is needed to get a dark mark on the page....although they require sharpening alot more hehe :D but i really prefer the softer pencils it saves having to go over shading time and time again to get a really dark effect lol

Thanks Shen. I might pick up some of those HB pencils this week. I usually buy my pens and pencils when I'm in HK, as they're much cheaper there...

I always loved to use the BLACK pencils from those big big trays of multiple colored pencils. Too bad they dont just have packages of 10 of those, cause now you'd have to buy a whole tray of coloured pencils just to use the black one...

well...usually craft stores sell the single pencils...they are a little more expensive but it beats buying packs when you just want one, i know here the craft stores sell singular pencils... from watercolor ones to pastel pencils (much less messy than pastels themselves :D)

@Yi:

Vue is very easy to use. All you got to to is fiddle with it for a few hours and see what it does. :)

This is what I did on my second day of fiddling:
https://www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/forums/ ... 1/Vue2.jpg

Inspired by this National Geographic wallpaper:
https://www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/forums/ ... ue2Ori.jpg

To create a road:
Create a cube, put a grey texture on it and stretch it. There's your road.

Feel free to ask me if you have simple technical questions about Vue. :)

Hey Tom, great stuff man.
Sorry for the late reply but wanted to check it out first and try it, before I answered.... (which in the end took way longer then I thought)

I still dont understand the road thing btw. I understand the cube-making part, but where do you get your grey texture, and how do you also put a white line on it that repeats itself?

Your national Geographic pic looks cool btw...

Had a sickday today, so played around with the program again (about time) and here's the result...

Image

Not happy with the water yet, so might return to it once school is over (hopefully next week). I really want to learn this program and all the opther 3d stuff well, but I find it hard at times to get started and keep at it, when things dont go well...

Yeah, water lacks ripples.
Still it's very good. :)

About the road-making thing:
-Object - Create - Cube.
-Grab one end of the cube and stretch it.
-Select the cube and click on the sphere (top-right part of Vue).
-Now you're in the basic material editor.
-Double-click on the sphere on the left.
-Choose your texture (Basic - Flat gray).
EDIT: I've just realized that on the above pic I wasn't using flat gray.
I guess there are other textures that might work.
how do you also put a white line on it that repeats itself?
Same thing. :D

-Object - Create - Cube (Create - Plane - works too).
-Grab one end and squeeze it.
-From the top view it should look like a line.
-Use the same technique as above to put a white texture on it.
-Grab your line and put it on the road.
-Duplicate the line (Edit - duplicate).

That's how I build objects in Vue (by taking boxes, spheres and lines and putting them together). :)

Keep trying, it's a fun program once you get to know it.

Thanks Tom. :) I just got back from school (sick again) so I think I'll take a nap first, or check a movie, but I'll tryyour instructions tonight and if it works I post the result.

(If it doesnt, I'll come around your place and smash your new projector) :D

WTF!? There MUST be an easier way then duplicating and placing those lines by hand...!?

yeah actually me too, tho i have no particular preference, to color and black and white. but in certain subjects black and white really add something else to the drwing that color cant...same with photographs...

once i get settled into college again and get the work evened out and everything. im gonna start drawing again, i have colored pastel pencils and really want to experiment with them now. lol

The first picture I did a lil bit of after-work in photoshop to get the colours and contrast a bit better, but the 2nd picture didnt need any touch-up...
