About the 50 Films before you die thing - I didnt see it but:

Films you must see 'before you die'

Movie experts have named the 50 films you should see before you die.

Number one is Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 Vietnam War classic Apocalypse Now.

The list was compiled by a panel of movie experts to mark the free-to-air launch of Film4.

Few of the entries are big screen blockbusters.

Second is The Apartment, Billy Wilder's 1960 comedy drama starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine.

Brazilian film City of God is third, followed by Roman Polanski's Chinatown.

Sexy beast, starring Ray Winstone and Sir Ben Kingsley, is fifth. (??? I havent seen it but I'm not a fan of mockney gangster/crime movies) :?

The top 10 is completed by 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest, French flick A Bout de Souffle, Donnie Darko and Woody Allen's Manhattan.

Alien, Lost in Translation and The Shawshank Redemption just missed out on a top 10 place. The top 50 includes Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting, Erin Brockovich, The Breakfast Club and Scarface.

The list was chosen by a panel of experts including Lord Puttnam, producer of Chariots of Fire and Midnight Express.

These lists are self-indulgent arse. I never bother giving them house room. It's curious that all the films Grim mentioned have been screened on Film Four. 8)

Is someone's Word locked to "double line" spacing?

It was good to see IA in the original language but did they have to ruin it by having an enormous black bar at the bottom? Oh and no original aspect ratio :( (to be expected).

I can confirm adverts are definitely in place.

Watched Duck Soup, which is hilarious. Amazing scene that (I'm assuming) originated from this film: one person impersonating another in place of a mirror :D

Hey,

I just heard on a C4 trailer that they're showing a season of Ghibli movies after the 3pm movie every day (I think).
I've seen Spirited Away/Princess Mononoke (superb), Castle In the Sky (very good) and Nausicaa (also good).

Would be nice if they showed HK movies other than Infernal Affairs (which they cropped, I checked).

Mark that's really sad. It's TV. Surely you don't expect uncropped anamorphic do you? Agreed we should get it but we've never got it yet so it's going to suddenly change.

Besides give Film Four a chance it's only been on out a few weeks.

As for the Studio Ghibli's. The one I caught a glimpse of was the English dub version

Film Four did screen films in their original aspect ratios in the past - I had the subscription channel for a while. I just hope that the IA cropping isn't a regular occurance. I think they may also have cropped The Italian Job remake - if it was meant to be 2.35?
