Gladiator: Theatrical Cut or Extended Cut?

Post by bradavon »

I'm trying to decide if I should pick up the Gladiator: 3 Disc SE but really can't decide if it's worth checking out the Extended Cut.

Personally I think the Theatrical Cut works just perfectly so I'm really not sure. I'd have loved it if the army we kept hearing about actually appeared but in 17 minutes I'm sure this doesn't happen.

What does the extra footage actually consist of?

So for those who have actually seen the extended cut:

Is it better?
Why?
Does it really add any worthy footage?
Why?

You get the idea.

It better as the new footage makes it better.

Buy it and find out

Seriously too many nice little bits to list, most make the film feel a lot better and some people get more fleshed out (its not added action footage, its charecter stuff).

You should get it for the amazing documentary anyway, its one hell of a beast! better than all the crap on the origanal 2 dvd release, by a mile! as the origanal dvds were frankly crap compared to the 3 dvd version.

I liked the Discovery Channel documentary about Gladiator games or something.

I like that game show "Gladiators" (favourite was Jet... or maybe Lightning).

I've not seen the extended version but I felt that the theatrical cut was perfection. I too find it difficult to believe that the extended version is an improvement... but I'll find out if I see it for £3 at next year's HMV sale.

Hmmm Jet

Back on topic thanks Romero. Would the extra footage bump the score for you? Is the extra footage just the deleted scenes? Is it lots of little changes or little changes + one big one?

Who else voted for the extended cut? There have only been TWO submissions both for the Extended cut. Speak up!

The problem is I'd much prefer the R1 to get both cuts (considering I'm not convinced it needs to be any longer) but that's so expensive compared to the UK R2.

Still I could get the UK R2 and trade whichever is the weaker cut. I'm sure the extras are decent but I won't have time to watch them.

I'm going to sleep on it and decide tomorrow £6.99 is in many ways to stupid to pass up.

Why not own both the Signature Selection 2-Disc R1 and the Extended Edition? I own both of them (the Region 1 Extended) and to me it's an "Ultimate Edition 5-Disc" set.
I'm back AGAIN.

I probably should but like I said (in no order):

1. No DTS

2. Does it need to be any longer? It's not like Blade Runner or Kingdom of Heaven which both have problems in their TC cuts. Ridley Scott doesn't think it needs to be any longer

3. The extras don't interest me. I prefer Historical documentaries over endless Making Of's.

I'll pick it up one day but really want the R1 (both cuts) and have so many DVDs to watch anyway.

Welcome too btw.

Its one of the best dvds sets for ages, yet he is passing on it even if the extras are as good as they get and that documentary is staggering! better than most films, and the films better with the new footage.

Sounds a bit odd to me not to get it, but hey.

Thank you kindly, folks for the welcome. I'm also The_Flash2019 over at TheImportForums.
I'm quite fond of extras myself considering. And I'm quite the fan of DVD Producers such as Charlie de Lauzirika and Laurent Bouzerau(sp?). I've owned the Extended Edition the first day it came out but only thing I've done with it was take a look at the packaging and read the booklet. Mind you I own the R1 US version. Guess I was correct when I said I was fond of extras. 8)

p.s - I'll only keep on DVD though. I don't need both cuts.

Don't get rid of the original 2-discer, the DTS 6.1 track is too good to part with.
