Hmm. Brad, you clearly feel the same way about Dr. Who about how I felt about Star Trek. That god-awful recent prequel series was totally messing with continuity. Eg humans don't make first contact with the Ferengi until Picard's days, Enterprise had an episode where they encounter the Ferengi ~200 years earlier.

Personally, I couldn't give a shit about Dr. Who continuity. I've seen from the 1996 TV movie onwards.
You'll only be able to play it on your PC unless your DVD player happens to be able to play DivX/Xvid which is unlikely.
I doubt that XviD plays on any commercial DVD player. XviD is an open-source codec, DivX is commercial. True that they both grew out of the same project, but they've become quite different since then. XviD is the superior codec actually.

Ahh good points on the Davros side Bradavon, yes then it possible it could be him, but they never mentioned his name. Just watched the season finale and it was excellent. One of the best in the series. Had some good comedy moments, like when the Dalek and Cybermen first met,

[Dalek]: Identify
[CyberMan]: Identify
.
.
.
[Dalek]: There is one thing you are superior in.
[CyberMan]: What is that
[Dalek]: Being destroyed

 I loved that touch to it. This was easily one of the better scripts Russell Davis had written. I wonder for the boxset of season 2, will BBC release the 3d glasses, to show more of the void, ala Nightmare on Elm Street part 6 (R1 Boxset had the 3d glasses). I'm sure they may put more stuff of the void, and call it a director cut of something.

I have not seen any ice warriors episodes, so will check the who world for that. What else do you think they will bring in. The master would be cool (Anthony Head.. Please play this character..)

I agree with Bradavon on making a full length feature movie, on Doctor who, and what happened in the Timewar. This would be excellent.

Time war movie, yes please. It'll have to star Paul McGann and/or Eccelston (presuming that the regeneration from 8th to 9th happened during this period).

Yes I quite liked Paul McGann as the Doctor. He was very good and actually enjoyed the movie as well. The music was good, so was the gothic Tardis as well. It would have been nice if they kept that in for the new series :)

According to Wikipedia there is a suggestion it happened around the eighth Doctor's time (so Paul McGann). Well RTD has said they're not connected (the two time wars) but really they'd have to be to make sense.

It couldn't have happened any earlier as no Doctor previously has mentioned it.

Eccelston will never return but hopefully McGann. Can you imagine the exposition needed though? Considering they're really staying clear of two heavy stories this would be difficult.

EvaUnit02 wrote:Thanks for the consideration BTW.
No worries. Do you also check out the Doctor Who Confidentials?
EvaUnit02 wrote:Hmm. Brad, you clearly feel the same way about Dr. Who about how I felt about Star Trek.
I grew up watching the McCoy Doctor Who's so consider it a part of my history. I was to young for the other Doctor but did catch a few of the Tom Baker episodes on video (he stayed for a whopping 7 years).

There is so much Who back story is incredible. I've been reading up on it at Wikipedia it's quality stuff.
EvaUnit02 wrote:Eg humans don't make first contact with the Ferengi until Picard's days, Enterprise had an episode where they encounter the Ferengi ~200 years earlier.
I heard about that episode today, that is really sloppy writing. The universe these sci-fi shows is so crucial that can't be stressed enough.
EvaUnit02 wrote:Personally, I couldn't give a shit about Dr. Who continuity. I've seen from the 1996 TV movie onwards.
You would if you had. It's hard to recommend where to start as they'll (mostly) good. If you feel inclined just pick a point and delve in.
EvaUnit02 wrote:I doubt that XviD plays on any commercial DVD player.
You're mistaken. My Pioneer 540 officially only plays DivX but is more than happy with Xvid too. I've heard this from a fair few players.

(Incidentally did you still want that "Hearts of Darkness" DVD? I've not asked as the proper DVD is now out next month. I've recorded it to the hard disk but not put it on DVD as I can't see the point any more)
EvaUnit02 wrote:True that they both grew out of the same project
That's the key! Also remember DivX PC codec can play Xvid if you tick the MPEG4 tick box.
EvaUnit02 wrote:XviD is the superior codec actually.
I've heard a few people say that but in honesty I can't tell the difference from either my own encoding or general downloading + I much prefer all the oodles of options the DivX encoder has not available in the Xvid version but most things in Xvid now.

That's a cop out pandering to a new audience. They don't want to confuse the new generation of viewers which is fair enough but saying his name is Davros or more importantly (considering it is them) saying it's the Autons won't confuse anyone. Why would it?
slasher13 wrote:One of the best in the series.
I'd say the second part is THE best episode from the last two series. "Dalek" was also a particular highlight.
slasher13 wrote:This was easily one of the better scripts Russell Davis had written.
It definitely was. RTD seems to be only capable of creating complete turkey scripts (that uber rubbish Slathean story, farting aliens please) two excellent ones.
slasher13 wrote:I wonder for the boxset of season 2, will BBC release the 3d glasses, to show more of the void
I doubt it as an LE box set of the Cyberman head is coming already.
slasher13 wrote:and call it a director cut of something.
It will never happen but I so wish extended cuts would get released for the box set. The first final cut of the last episode was 6 minutes longer. I want to see the extended bridge battle sequence god damn it.
slasher13 wrote:What else do you think they will bring in.
I'm really not sure but agreed The Master has to return he like The Daleks and Cybermen is crucial to the Who Universe.

Oh yeah I'd forgotten the Tardis was different again for the TV Movie. Still it looks more like the original white Tardis than the new series:

http://www.themindrobber.co.uk/mcgann-i ... vd112-.jpg

It does give a much better idea than the original and even new series of it's sheer size. It's always supposed to be huge with different rooms (shown in the original series occasionally).

This table and chair looks weird though:

I also completely forgot up until the TV Movie the Doctor Who series was almost always (some of the Colin Baker episode were 45 minutes) 25 minutes long BUT crucially each story was spanned over 2-7 episodes (I forget the exact number but some ranged from 2 episodes up to about 7).

That allowed for much longer and extensive stories than 4 episodes allows (i.e - the current 2 parters in their 45 minute instead of 25 minute length).

Lastly you all MUST check out the excellent Podcast for the two episodes of the series finale:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/sounds/

Especially the last one. They're clearly all having so much fun it's a laugh a second (as all commentaries "should" be):

Agreed on this, for every Doctor Who Fan, they should have mentioned the name Davros, to make it clear that it was the creator of the daleks who was in the final 2 parter episode. I hope he reappears in season 3 (sorry Bradavon, I know you don't like it being mentioned like that) :)
bradavon wrote:I'd say the second part is THE best episode from the last two series. "Dalek" was also a particular highlight.
Yes the "Dalek" episode is a great esp, You really feel sorry for the poor machine, and I think that is because it is such a strong script. For one you see the Doctor who first sees the dalek being scared and wants to get out. He is not grinning, but full of anger, for the dalek.
bradavon wrote: It definitely was. RTD seems to be only capable of creating complete turkey scripts (that uber rubbish Slathean story, farting aliens please) two excellent ones.
Yup totally know what you mean, Don't mean to flame this, but I don't think RTD is as good as everyone has made him to be like. He has done good scripts and also directed the eps, but everyone, especially in the award show, seems to big him up completely, saying if it was for RTD then Doctor Who wouldn't be here. I didn't agree with this.
bradavon wrote: I doubt it as an LE box set of the Cyberman head is coming already.
Ohh do you have any links of this??

Was the final cut mentioned in the commentary? Would love to see that in the forthcoming boxset :)

Exactly, but it is left upto RTD who is brought into the next season. Hope he reads forums like these

So will you be getting the boxset Bradavon, I have the boxset for the 1st season, the tardis box (which is breaking now) :(.. I wonder if BBC do a slimline pack, I've looked at there website for this, but can't find anything

Some back story on The Ice Warriors (found on the link at the end of this post):

"Part of an Ice Warrior costume is seen in one shot, representing one of the mutant creatures produced by Davros in his experiments."

It's a pity like I said early that the stories are no longer spanned out of 5-7 episodes can you imagine how much stronger the stories could be if they didn't finish after one episode (there used to be 26 episodes were series so 6 months of TV). I wonder why they no longer do this?

The interesting thing I've just remembered it Doctor Who used to be much darker sure it has always been (mostly) kid friendly but the stories used to be much darker with deeper stories to them. I honestly don't remember that many funny stories, actually none.

RTD did say women and kids were who he wanted to attract most of all.

I don't mind the new series being funnier as David Tennant does it so well. Now I think about it The Doctor of old used to be very obnoxious and think he was superior to everyone else.
Agreed on this, for every Doctor Who Fan, they should have mentioned the name Davros, to make it clear that it was the creator of the daleks who was in the final 2 parter episode.
To back track what I said earlier there's a chance it's not him and another emperor as there have been other Dalek emperors in the past too.
but I don't think RTD is as good as everyone has made him to be like
Agreed. He really has a big head, this is clear if you check out some of the BBC Confidentials.
Ohh do you have any links of this??
Of course:

Was the final cut mentioned in the commentary? Would love to see that in the forthcoming boxset.
It certainly does. You should at least check out the last two podcasts/commentaries (especially the Doomsday one it's so funny as they all break into laughter).

I don't know if they'll create new commentaries for the box set or re-edit the podcasts as really there is no need to create new commentaries. Still RTD does love watching his work.
Hope he reads forums like these.
He knows The Master is popular and at one point that teacher was going to be The Master or something like that. Apparently one of the early trailers even said "The Master" in the background when he was on screen so I bet they were thinking about it.

I hope The Daleks don't return for Series 3 to have them in every series would be silly.
So will you be getting the boxset Bradavon
Brad please  , at some point yes but when it comes down in price (I don't buy many box sets because of the cost). I have the first Series on Xvid (all of them) and funnily enough it's enough for me (although I may end up getting it one day). I much preferred the second series (I give up it's to easy to call them the 1-2-3 series).

I didn't even watch them all in Series 1 (I only missed 2-3) I've started to realise this which is why I'm going to go back to Series 1 now Series 2 is over.

I've made my own Series 2 Finale DVD with:

1. Series 2 Finale Trailer (shown at the end of Fear Her)
2. Both Series 2 Finale Episodes
3. Both Series 2 Finale BBC Confidentials

As they were recorded to my Hard Disk Recorder first then transferred to DVD the quality is the same as it was broadcast (the two BBC Confidentials have been compressed a bit, so it could all fit on a DVD-5). It's only DD2.0 of course (the box set will be DD5.1) but it will do nicely for now.

I've not heard about slim-line cases, are they ever used for box sets?

I have given in and picked up "Genesis of the Daleks" a 1975 6 part serial starring Tom Baker and apparently one of the best Who stories ever made (£9.99 from CD WOW):

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/ ... sofdaleks/

It will go nicely with the "Beginning" box set of the very first 3 serials ever made I've also just picked up but that will have to be it as I clearly can't collect all the Doctor Who episodes so I'm not going to try.

No. They worth downloading? Truncated versions are in the DVD season boxsets anyway. I wouldn't care about clips from old shows that are missing from the DVD versions.
RTD seems to be only capable of creating complete turkey scripts (that uber rubbish Slathean story, farting aliens please) two excellent ones.
He did write Tooth & Claw, that's a great episode. Then again he did write dirge like Love & Monsters and New Earth.
(Incidentally did you still want that "Hearts of Darkness" DVD? I've not asked as the proper DVD is now out next month. I've recorded it to the hard disk but not put it on DVD as I can't see the point any more)
Dunno at moment. Could you please hang onto it for the next month? Will have to see how the Metrodome disc fairs first.

They're officially called Thinpacks (Amaray's name for them). They're half the size of a keepcase, I've seen at least 2-discer thinpack releases. They're becoming the standard for DVD boxsets in R1 (eg Sony re-released all the Stargate boxsets in thinpack packaging this month).

Yes I have got that as well from Amazon Jersey, it was for the same price. Very good as well, enjoyed it. I did love Doctor Who: Resurrection of the Daleks, which was when Peter Davison was the doctor. It is a really good series and the dvd is very good as well.

See http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=5272

I would love to get the Beginning one, haven't seen any for cheap thou. Will check. I want to get Doctor Who: The Caves of Androzani. Peter Davison last couple of eps. Supposed to be very good, but very dark

Hey Brad,

About the doctor having a labido :D My bad, you're right. (Well probably, I havent seen those episodes you mentioned). But I did read that as far as back as the William Hartnell days, his assistant was actually his grand daughter or something.

The very first episode William Hartnell's Doctor said he has a granddaughter and in fact she was one of his companions from the start until 1964 (so only one year). She reappeared once after that for the 25th Anniversay Five Doctors TV Movie.

It's odd as clearly at one time he had a partner but since then they've only ever mentioned it subtly. I did read on Wikipedia they never originally intended for him to have a granddaughter but they worried what people would think of an old man travelling with a 15 year old girl.
EvaUnit02 wrote:No. They worth downloading? Truncated versions are in the DVD season boxsets anyway. I wouldn't care about clips from old shows that are missing from the DVD versions.
They're definitely worth seeing yes but downloading no. Why can't you watch them on TV?

I always catched them directly after the TV show aired on TV. DivX/Xvid is good but they can't compete with digital broadcast WS.
EvaUnit02 wrote:He did write Tooth & Claw, that's a great episode.
It was decent enough but not great. Bar the Series finale "Girl in the Fireplace" stands head and shoulders above the rest of the new series 2 for me.
EvaUnit02 wrote:Then again he did write dirge like Love & Monsters and New Earth.
I liked New Earth but agreed Love and Monsters completely and utterly rubbish. What on earth where they thinking? I don't know anyone who actually likes it.
EvaUnit02 wrote:Dunno at moment. Could you please hang onto it for the next month? Will have to see how the Metrodome disc fairs first.
You don't think after all this time I'd get rid of it? Just let me know. It's on my HD Recorder with chapters created so just needs burning to DVD. I have plenty of space left on the HD so it's not going anywhere anytime soon. I'm also keeping the VHS too of course.

I only put it on the HD so I could put the VCR in the loft. I too am hoping to get the DVD. If it doesn't come I'll then burn it to DVD. I'm waiting to watch it just in case.
slasher13 wrote:I would love to get the Beginning one, haven't seen any for cheap thou. Will check.
I bought it on a whim from CD WOW for £14.99 (usually much more than I'd pay). I forgot to check eBay as it's under a tenner on there, new too. Still it has oodles of extras and looks like a really nice set my copy arrived today.

Do you own any other Doctor Who episodes?
slasher13 wrote:I want to get Doctor Who: The Caves of Androzani. Peter Davison last couple of eps. Supposed to be very good, but very dark
I've heard from loads of people that's one of the best serials (or at least on DVD). I may have to pick it up but really I need to stop as I can't watch them all so I'm not going to try.

So why has there been no discussion of Season 3?

I saw the first episode last night, twas pretty good. IMO the new black chick is way hotter than Billie Piper.

This thread should be renamed to just Doctor Who, paging Bradavon.

I've not brought it up as I've been too busy to think about it. Oh man she is so fucking gorgeous, those tight jeans and low top are awesome :D . She has some acting chops too.

Episode 1 of Series 3 is good, episode 2 is not bad, episode 3 I really liked. Make sure you check out the Doctor Who Confidential that goes with episode 3. I always watch them but I see they can be skipped.

Along with episode 3 some answers are revealed as well as some juicy snipits on what's to come. I'll not say any more than that, other than make an exception and watch Doctor Who Confidential Episode 3 (too).

I wish the Doctor wouldn't use his bloody Sonic Screwdriver every 2 bloody seconds though (he never used to, not even in prior series of the new series). Come on use that brain of yours.

Series 3 could be the best of the 3 yet, although it will be very hard to beat series 2 2-part finale. Each series seems to have a few really special episodes, some good one and some rubbish ones.

EDIT: I missed your last post, last weeks was excellent. The ending especially (some juicy info revealed). The killer crabs are old Doctor Who monsters way back from 1963 I think. This is also revealed in the Doctor Who Confidential.

I think this season Doctor Who has started off quite slow, compared to the other 2 season. It may be me, because 1st Season, was the 1st Doctor Who for ages with Chris Ecceleton, and Season 2 beginning was the new doctor - David Tennant, so after that, it does seem season 3 is a bit tame, however saying that, I did love Runaway Bride - Xmas Special. That was pretty good, yeah the new assistant is lovely. She has a nice smile. I understand what Brad saying about the sonic screwdriver, in the old series, it wasn't used that much, so it is bloody annoying.

I wouldn't mind if he used the screwdriver every now and again but more than he used to but in every episode for ages now it appears at least 2-3 times. It wasn't even that often in series 1.

The Xmas special like the last one was pants IMO.
