Did anyone observe the 2 minute silence?

I did but two of my colleagues who also happened to be in the room talked (moaned actually not about 7/7 just in general) right through it, oh and some sighs too

They knew jolly well it was happening at noon. Wankers! I should've gone outside but who expects people to talk at such times and you can't exactly move once it's begun.

I hate stupid silence for 2 minutes, it costs the country hundreds of millions and is pointless.

Let people remember them in their own way! and not let a forced silence be the way.

Its a total joke that we remember these people above others who die every day, they didnt have silence for the thousands the IRA scum killed or the family I know who were blown to fuck just before the pathetically named 7/7

I dont need to be told when I MUST shut up and must think of people, its a pathetic tradition.

I can think on my own terms and dont need to be forced by some ignorant loyalty to the country to do it.

You must stop for these people, you must forget others, its a joke.

Romero I think thats incredibly harsh, would you say the same for the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in World War I and II? Had it not been for brave men (not just men) like them, you would not be standing here to moan.
Brad I did notice the silence.

tbh...no i didnt recognize the silence, neither do i recognize any other silences, i actualy agree with romero too, i dont need to be told when to remember people thanks, a 2 minute silence isnt suffienct to remeber these people, or any other people imo.

i'll remember these people when i want to, and not be told when i should.

Ah. Sorry Shen, I know Romero is often coarse but in your last line I see what he means in that sense. But a silence is about showing respect, even if you didnt know these people.
How does Romero know there isnt rememberance for the IRA victims?

Grim what has that got to do with anything?
Say what about the "soldiers who sacrificed their lives in World War I and II"?
I didnt say anything at all about the people in question, just the method which we are suposed to follow to show we care, so anyone that doesnt stop and think is an evil person, and has no respect for anyone who died.

People show respect in many ways and remember in many others, we dont need to be force fed a government idea which is only there for them to look good anyway.
They have silence for anyone in todays society and we have to abide, or we are freaks and dont care for them apprently.

I do care about most the things the silence is for, but why sould I sit around for a few miniutes doing nothing, having to stop work and costing me cash (I get paid the more I type). Its not the cash thing that gets to me I must say, its the fact we "have" to do it.

People have to shut up, no matter how important in big companies and basically for what? nothing. It doesnt do anything, it doesnt help anyone, its not constructive to sit about doing nothing, and all it does is make a lot of people do nothing for a few minutes.

If thats remembering the dead, then great why dont we stand still all day and think about every person who died in the past 1000 years?

They are forcing you do do exactly what they want, surley you have a brain and dont want to follow every order they give you?
I am not the only person who thinks like this, but I am in the minority who will say it and I was suprised how many at my workplace felt the same, but they wont say anything to others as then they are Freaks.

So if I say

Lets all think for 2 minutes about the poeple I have known die in bombings and murders?

Will they? not a chance in hell.

I have thought about the London bombings more than most people, I dont need to spend 2 more minutes because the government wants to gain a few voter points.

The amount of evil deeds going on around the wordl right now would mean we need to stop ever few minutes to think about them, but apparently we only have to think about certain people, in certain groups, on certain occasions, at a certain time specified by a government. Sounds ridiculous to me.

and the Ira victims, when was the last time you were told to stop for them? hence its bull.

isnt respect better shown by learning from what happened and helping it not happen again? not wasting our time being told that all these people deserve is 2 minutes silence, then on with your lives again...

I have leraned so much from the kind of things I read and watch than remembering ever will tell me :)

The thing is when will the next evil deep be done and we will have to remember that, it just a reminder of how evil people can be sadly :( and we only seem to remember our own ( on the whole), never say the 205000+ Africans who were slaughtered last year.

I mean maybe there is rememberance in Ireland for victims of the IRA.
I'm sorry Romero but why can't you sit quietly and think for a few minutes? If you go to a funeral you are supposed to be quiet through the service. When I remembered my grandad at his funeral, one of our party kept chattering and it pissed me off, and most likely my mum and nan as well

No offence meant Romero or anyone :)

Yes and they went to the funeral for a reason, they probibly knew your grandad and wanted to be there, if they act silly during that and talk then I would say they dont deserve to be there, thats respect and I would too feel crappy if someone ruined a funeral.

But I didnt go anywhere to remember these people on 7/7 or any other time I was going about my daily life and had to stop. Thats the BIG difference.

2 minutes isnt much yes, and I wouldnt mind doing it if I wanted to. But I was ordered to like a piece of crap basically by the government and my workplace, and thousands of others shut down.

and the IRA blew up many hundreds of UK citizens in the UK, we dont stop for them anymore as the government told us its ok to not stop and remember them anymore.

I think we should all take a 2 minute silence to remember and pay our respects to the hundreds of millions our country lost due to the 2 minutes silence of today...

PS: since when did we upgrade the usual 1 minute silence to a 2 minute silence? And why? Wasnt the 1 minute silence enough? Did people complain that 60 seconds didnt show enough respect, and we needed 60 more seconds? Next year we'll go for 3 minutes silence? Maybe 5?

Hmm. Not sure who decides that.
We'll have to agree to disagree on this one :) I just don't see a problem with taking time to reflect and pay your respects. Remember this is the biggest single attack on the UK since the 1940's when the Nazis were here.
If a forum members family member had died, you'd want condolances right? Would "Why do I have to stop doing what I'm doing? Busy day" be my appropiate response?
See what I mean?

How does a 2 minute silence cost millions?

I will add it's easy for us (the collective us) to comment when none of our love ones died. I'm sure we'd feel the same if they had.

Personally I partially agree with Romero we do live in an incredibly hypocritical world but that doesn't negate the need to show respect for those who died on 7/7.

I forgot to add when I pointed out to my colleagues afterwards one of them smiled as if to say "never mind who gives a shit".

If you dont know how 2 minutes costs hundreds of millions?
Well then you are not thinking hard enuff, if millions of people stop for 2 minutes (including the stock exchange) it costs hundreds of millions. People are getting paid to do jobs and not doing the work, do the math its a fortune and is hundreds of millions (if not more). Its not as if its only 2 minutes anyway, theres before time wasted getting ready for it and after time talking about it etc.. always works o0ut way more than a couple of minutes.

I wont bother talking any more, I made my points. If people dont agree thats ok, if they do thats ok too.
