Ae Fond Kiss - 4/5
A Ken Loach film which deals with how families are split apart when people from different cultures (in this case, a Glaswegian lad of Muslim Pakistani origin and an Irish Catholic lass) fall in love. The acting is amazing; both of the main actors given moments to truly shine which, when considering that the male lead (Atta Yaqub) was giving his debut performance, is particularly impressive. The director has to be given credit for his ballsy choice of showing both sides of the argument, as well as populating the film with believeable characters.
Very impressed and highly recommended.

It WAS originally a '12'. SOME councils changed the rating. Because of this Fox requested a PG for their re-release and after 13 secs of cuts (not enough, IMO) they got it. Some of the innuendos were cut. This version was carried over to VHS and LD and later DVD. However, the most recent submission, passed in 2003, was uncut and amazingly still awarded a PG. The BBFC have lost the plot a bit. I would hate to have to explain to my 7-year old what "crabs" are.grim_tales wrote:I didnt know that re: Mrs. Doubtfire Mark. I'm almost certain the cinema version I saw (Brighton Marina cinema - I think) was 12 rated and the ads I saw at the time on TV rated the film 12, on the BBFC site it says the film was rated PG in May 1994 and cut by 13s, can't remember what was missing though.

Repulsion (5 out of 5)
Roman Polanski's excellent study of a young woman's descent into insanity. Creepy, suspenseful moments, and a brilliantly subtle performance from Catherine Deneuve.

The Bride with white hair
Suprisingly good! The best role I´ve seen Brigitte Lin in. That´s definitly HER movie. So it even doesn´t matter that Leslie Cheung´s performance is rather poor.
Although I had expected the finale to be bigger - I really liked this movie. Also because of it´s atmosphere.

The Da Vinci Code
Definitly a very good movie. I felt that Tom Hanks didn´t have to act a lot - he rather seemed to play himself. He was the perfect choice to be Mr. Langdon.

I love the beginning of the film when the background of Leslie Cheung's character is told and how he grew up. Visually it is just wonderful. It really shows that Peter Pau knows how far you can go and what is possible by shooting on film. With Ronny Yu actually letting him experiment he resulted in having perfect lighting with a great choice of wide-angle-lenses. He just caught the light wonderfully.dragonhero005 wrote:The Bride with white hair

In addition to that you have a wonderful soundtrack. Great film technical-wise. Also quite good in terms of substance.

I know what you mean. I just love the scene in which young Leslie trains his skills with the sword in front of the rising sun... Great!thelostdragon wrote:I love the beginning of the film when the background of Leslie Cheung's character is told and how he grew up. Visually it is just wonderful.
btw: Francis Ng´s role is very weird.

A war named desire
Hmm... I didn´t like the movie in the beginning, I felt it was rather boring. But then it gets better and better.
I´ll have to rewach it. I guess I was too tired to follow the movie sometimes.
But one thing´s for sure: Francis Ng prooved again that he´s the coolest actor on earth. 8)

I loved the remake upon first viewing, but it lost much of it's appeal when I watched it a few more times. Romero's original is quality though. After seeing clips of it years ago, I never thought I would like it. But then I watched the whole film and thought it was fantastic from beginning to end.
