They played attractive football but were on the plane home. That doesnt always win.
I thought England did the best they could with 10 men (don't start that again ;) ) and we deserved to win :(

what bait...i was actually deadly serious in my post...we are too arrogant, and its about time we got taken down a peg or two. i've never supported england since i personally think we are too stuck up, to confident to the point it becomes arrogance. and way to egotistical...we think were the best, but we play like shit, and thats ok? personally imo i think we should have gone out before now...we dont deserve to play in the world cup, were not good enough, just under the illusion that we are... i'd rather support a team that actually played well and deserved their win than some half assed team that we call "england"...

flame me if you want, but england suck and they always will until we stop thinking like we're the best and start playing like we're actually half decent...

England has some great quality players (also a ouple that are way overrated) but I feel it's mainly Sven that's ruining it. He's a coward, just like Wenger in big important matches.

I dunno, this time he took a gamble on Lennon when he took Becks off, which nearly worked. Face it, England are poo at penalties :D

Not really a 'gamble', as Becks sucked... ;)

Why? If he sees one of his players get stomped in the balls he has every right to draw the refs attention to it.
grim tales wrote:Agree that Rooney was an idiot, he only has himself to blame for getting sent off. He could of made a difference. However, I'm not sure it was intentional
It definately was. Rooney was frustrated and chav that he is lashed out. Instant red card in my book.

It was a bloody stupid thing to do, even Eriksson said it was a red, as it just went on). AFAIK Rooney was rightly red carded for stamping on Ricardo's balls and then pushing, but he didnt actually look like getting booked until Portugal players came over and started hounding the ref.
The same should of applied to Figo's headbutt then. Also as soon as Rooney was sent off, Ronaldo smugly winked at the bench. I think that was what Sam was referring to.
However, I wouldn't make Rooney the scapegoat for us (ie say he lost us the game). Put it this way, he didn't lose it as we held on, BUT he could of won it.
Yi it wasnt a gamble to take Becks off in itself, he had to take him off because he was injured. I mean he took a gamble on Lennon who hadnt played much. Did you not see the game/highlights? We had more chances with 10 men than Portugal had with 11. Even Scolari said that.
The only difference was the poor penalties by Lampard and Gerrard.

Becks has quit as captain!
Quite heartfelt speeches from Becks and Sven on TV today - Becks seemed to have genuine emotion when he was talking. As for Mr. Burns, thats the first time I've heard him talk without saying "Well" :D
New era, new manager, new captain.
I'd go for Terry or Gerrard.

Sorry to hear England are out guys. My brother was almost in tears (okay not quite but he was gutted).

I did watch the first 25 minutes but then it was off for DVD shopping.

 at that photo.

I still say Ronaldo had every right to draw the refs attention to the foul. Rooney would've done the same had Ronaldo stamped on Beckham's balls. And no one forced Rooney to push Ronaldo in front of the ref. Face it: he's a chav and his agression is a liability on the world stage. I think had England stayed with 11 men they might just have scored. But we'll never know... As for Ronaldo winking: it's cheeky but Rooney has no one to blame but himself.

A few years ago, it was Beckham's lack of anger management that got him sent off against Argentina, and ultimately we lost on penalties. History has repeated itself with another young footballer who can't keep his anger in check (albeit with another team).

Ah well.
Now I want France (my third choice) to win the World Cup. After England exited, I was hoping Cafu could lift the Cup as captain and retire off the back of that. But I'll live with Zidane leading France to victory. As long as it's not the Germans or Portugese.

But honestly? I think the Germans will snag it this year.

@ Mark, right :) Totally agree about his agression often not helping us. Even Sven spoke about Rooney's lack of anger management and said the sending off was deserved (it was).

Argentina are out, Kurgan.

The semi-finals are:
German vs Italy
Portugal vs France

I suspect it will be a Germany vs France final.

Martin Jol wrote this in the sunday Times - some of the article.
"'To lose in those circumstances was a disgrace. And the biggest disgrace of all was Cristiano Ronaldo,' wrote Jol in his column for The Sunday Times.

'The key incident in the game was Wayne Rooney's sending-off. It wasn't even a booking.

'When Rooney trampled on Ricardo Carvalho, he didn't do it on purpose. Before that he was being impeded and should have had a foul anyway. The referee blew his whistle and paused and was thinking of what to do when Ronaldo ran over and asked him to show a card. It's how Ronaldo always behaves, trying to influence referees, and it turns my stomach when players do that.

'I thought to myself, how could he do that? You could argue that Ronaldo is playing for his country in a World Cup, so it's okay to do anything to win. I don't believe that. What about sporting values? Rooney is his club teammate, and judging by the way they walked out together at the start, joking, his friend? It was a double betrayal, a disaster for football.'
I disagree, stamping on a player is definitely a booking. But I think Ronaldo was trying to influence the referee as well as bringing the incident to his attention. IMO :)
But we didnt lose because of the ref or Rooney, we lost because we fluffed our penalties.

Load of bollocks that Sunday Times article. Excuses... excuses. How can he blame Ronaldo for something any one of the English team would have done in his place and say the stamping was an accident. Bad loser methinks.

Rooney was deservedly sent off. Anyone would have stepped up to the referee if a teammate gets stomped in the bollocks.

As I said, I'm glad England are out cause they've been shite all tournament long. The best they've played was yesterday, however, after Rooney got sent off and Becks was on the bench...

Didnt know he was injured, btw, but honestly, he's been poor all tournament. He has so much qualities but in this team he just didnt showcase them enough...

Ow, dont get me wrong, Becks has a great pass... but just put the stuff he did RIGHT, next to the stuff he messed up, like all the bad passes, all the bad free kicks, all the times he didnt pressurize, all the times he lost the ball way too easily.

Listen, he gets to take pretty much ALL the free kicks, so obviously he's gonna score you a couple. And he's got a great pass so obviously there will be someone at the end of it at times to score a goal. But when you compare it to the stuff he does wrong which gets the team in trouble, and the fact that Lennon looked way more convincing whenever he was brought on, plus there are others as well that should do better, Beck's performance hasnt been all that great.

Plus let's be fair, the pass he gave that led to the crouch goal against T&T was great, but that goal should never have counted obviously (Crouch pulling the guys hair), plus the free kick that went in also looked a bit like a mistake from the keeper, not to mention that Free kick in the very first game that everyone missed and ended up in the goal...

England really shouldnt even have been in the quarters, when you look at how they've played. Everytime edging through by some individual class and luck...

I dont like Portugal either, so dont get me wrong... but I certainly didnt lose any sleep over England being out.

Plus, when Portugal gets defeated by their next opponent, we can all enjoy seeing ronaldo cry his eyes out again...
At this point in the tournament, I dont even watch for the football anymore, but just to see shite countries lose and their superstars cry like bitches. The only team I've really liked throughout (that's now still left) is Germany. France was pretty good in their last match, and Portugal can play nice football when they want to... but Italy should be banned from football as they're just so shite...

IMO that free kick in the first game was going in anyway, it was just a Paraguay player on the end of it ;)
I agree about Italy, don't like them.
