DVDs to test my subwoofer?
For some reason these days, I can never be sure if my sub is working well. It makes a boom/pop noise whenever its' switched off, and its hard to hear "rumbles" from it compared to the other speakers.
It appears to close to my TV/amp, but because of the way my room is set up I can't move it. Does this make a difference?

If you have a THX optimised DVD, just run the test on that. Something like the Star Wars films, or a Pixar one should do the trick.
If you want to hear and test the sound, I always find the shoot-out on the freeway near the end of Heat as an excellent test. Any excuse to watch it, really
As for placement of a sub, it should be as close to a corner of the room and as close to a wall as possible. Obviously, it'll work when it's not in those positions, just not as well.

Terminator 2 UE - particularly the scene where he's firing the chaingun at the cop cars.
EDIT:
T3 is another good one. Particularly the car chase with the crane truck and the remote-controlled cop cars.

You'll have to upgrade your receiver once all the new HD digital surround formats become standard. Eg DD-Plus, DD-TrueHD.grim_tales wrote:I've done enough upgrading for now
I'm rooting for HD-DVD. DD-Plus is a required standard on all discs (higher bitrate than half-bitrate DTS tracks), only DD5.1 is required for Blu-ray.

It takes no effort at all to stay in the loop. All I've done is read a HD disc couple reviews on digitalbits, casually browsed HTF once and read the occasional HD title announcements on DVDactive and DVDtimes.grim_tales wrote:Yeah, but thats a few years away yet (for me anyway)![]()
Wow, I didnt know about DD-Plus, DD-TrueHD, etc.
