Only the R4 of that film is any good. Nearly all the extras from the OOP Pioneer release + anamorphic transfer of the unrated cut.

king of comedy 2/5

*supposed* to be one of stephen chows better movies...but i dont see why, it wasnt that funny, or that great TBH the young girl was annoying as hell, and so was the kid who played the "gangster". there was nothing really good about the story, infact it became plain stupid at times. there just seemed to be no point at all or storyline really..only this extra trying to act... the scene with the undercover cops was the best part of it but even that wasnt great...yeah just really didnt like this movie dunno why it seen as great.

oh and wtf with the little naked kid?!

*awaits a backlash of how good it is*

King of Comedy is pure genius.
Less absurd and less funny than its predecessors, KoC tells the story of Wan Tin-Sau, a very unsuccessful movie extra who's actually a very good actor.

Through his portrayal of Tin-Sau, Chow describes the movie industry, the triads, and more importantly the beginning of his career.

Cecilia Cheung's portrayal of Lau Piu-Piu is perhaps the best thing in the movie. She provides not only a touching love interest but also some very efficient tear-jerking moments.

I must admit I was sad that Ng Man-Tat didn't get a bigger role, and I find the John Woo-style ending a little out of place.

However, King of Comedy is by far Chow's best movie. Miles ahead of God of Cookery, Kung-Fu Hustle and Love on Delivery (his best films IMO).

I guess it's only Bisc and Romero on my list now.

lol i just didnt like the movie, not a crime is it?

cecilia cheung was annoying as hell, like most of the characters tbh ok so where she got beaten was kinda sad but even that wasnt done well. the guy who beat her was unconvicing and strained as a bastard rich guy, and cheungs reaction was just as strained. less absurd? i found it particularly stupid in places. unconvincing acting by most characters, even chow was poor (im so dead), at the end he got marginally better but seriously for me it was just bad. i do however agree with the less funny comment, it really wasnt funny, a few smiles raised here and there but not much more

you can analyze it and praise it as much as you wish...i still wont like it lol. didnt like GoC either

i'll still give chow a chance of course and watch some of his other movies but in this movie it just wasnt good imo

"King of Comedy" is the best Stephen Chow-film out there. He makes so much fun about all these stars and big producers and how they think they are Gods.

I love how he tries to impress the film crew by trying to show or talk about all the stuff he knows about film making and they just ignore him all the time.

The most touching scene is the "Fist of Fury" act on stage followed by that very romantic scene on the beach.

As for the naked kid... there are parts in China where kids certainly do sometimes run around naked to a certain age.

Agree with you, Tom, that the final undercover cop chapter is out of place.

Still, a 4.5/5 for me.

I love the naked kid. If you rewatch the movie you´ll realize how often it appears in the background. It´s always just going around and looking funny... great!

Also to my mind, King of Comedy is Chow´s best work, but I have to admit that I haven´t seen lots of his classics yet.

I loved the "The Killer" sketches. And, as it has already been mentioned, Cecilia Cheung is great! The scenes on the beach and the one with her in the taxi were very touching.

BTW: Although Ng Man Tat´s role is rather small, I love the way he acts it (very arrogant and unlikeable

)

I´d also give it a 4,5/5

my last movie was

Jiang Hu

Better than it was when I saw it for the first time... but still there are some disappointments, although the cinematograhy, editing, music and even the acting of some actors (yes, even Edison Chen

) is very good.
The biggest disappointment is its lengh....

I´ve only seen King of Comedy, Kung Fu Hustle, Fight Back to School 1+2 (the second part is pretty lame...) and Shaolin Soccer (I´m sure you just forgot to add it to your list...) by now.

yeah he was there often although i have no problem with a little naked kid running around... however i think bisc is referring to the scene where chow is playing with the kids penis and such, for me that also was something i didnt expect to see in such a movie...try that over here you'd be done for peadophilia...

im still gonna give stephen chow movies a chance...i liked kung fu hustle, and i have From bejing with love, and shaolin soccer to watch plus i'll probably get hold of a few more. but yeah this movie just sucked...maybe it was too overhyped for me and didnt live up to the expectations of a genius movie...rather turned out quite lame IMO...and like i said cecilia chung got on my nerves so damn much that kinda put me off the movie. so did the ganster kid, man he was just one of the most annoying actors i ever encountered...next to shu qi

My favourite scene from King of Comedy was probably the classroom scene where cecilia constantly insults Stephen, and he keeps politely asking them to stop insulting him... then he goes on with his introduction to the class of prostitutes, and mentioning something that's pretty innocent, yet cecilia takes offence, and goes looking for something to hit him with. The oldest of the group is trying to tell stephen 'dont worry' cecilia finds a stool or whatever it's called and smacks the shit out of stephen, while we still hear the old whore in the background 'dont worry' 'dont worry'

I agree it's one of Chow's best movies. I also love Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, although I did feel that KFH had too little Chow in it.

Of the older Chow movies I liked the 2 Monkey King movies, as well as Love on Delivery, Legend of the Dragon (the snookermovie) and some others.

God of Gamblers is a Wong Jing movie with Chow Yun-Fat.
All for the Winner is a Wong Jing movie with Stephen Chow.
God of Gamblers 2 is a sequel to both movies.

I thought the naked kid was a bit creepy because there was no point to it. Why would a grown man flick an unknown child's penis?? Even if I had liked the film I couldn't explain that.

To me his funniest is: Forbidden City Cop.
Others favourites are: The Flirting Scholar, God of Gamblers 3, The Lucky Guy and The Magnificent Scoundrels.

His role was ment to be annoying! So he did a great job getting on your nerves.

One of my favorite scenes is the first one after the intro with Stephen pretending to be a director and teaching those extras, but still they move and act like ghosts. And the scene following, where Chow has to show his talent and act as if he was nervous... Great!

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (4 out of 5)

What a fun movie! This was a pleasant treat for me, since I hadn't read much about it before watching. Downey Jr. and Kilmer have great chemistry and snappy dialogue to work with. Some of the darkly humorous bits were just laugh-out-loud funny.

The voice-over narration is a bit irritating at times, but it goes along with the self-conscious character of Downey Jr.'s flawed underdog.

Highly recommended. :thumbleft:

Good new film from Yang Yun-ho. Some very serious and true messages about how money controls everything in the world today, including the justice system.
Good acting and production. The only real flaw i found was the extremely cartoonish bad guy played by Choi Min-su...but in a way the over-the-topness of his character added some comic relief to the otherwise sad film.

Recommended.

Blackadder Goes Forth - Goodbyeeee - 5/5

Superb finale. The gags keep going right up until the final scene, which is immensely poignant and hard to watch, particularly for a comedy.
