Epic means bugger all anymore, film makers havent got a clue a 87 minute film can now be described as an Epic  or a Jet Li film  KOTD is longer and more Epic than most so called Epic films thats for sure.

Of course. An epic doesn't have to be long but it does have to have that "BIG EPIC" feel.

Epic means it has a LARGE huge powerfull story, which has an impact on ALOT of people IN THE MOVIE, like Gladiator having an impact on all the people of Rome, Braveheart having alot of impact on the Scottish people in the movie, etc etc.
Plus usually it has a huge cast, and multiple big settings.

Danny the Dog isnt an epic. It's pretty small-scale really, as it only affects those around Danny.
KOTD as well, only really affects those around Jet and the bad guys...

The Fugitive is borderline epic. Still a very personal story, but has a big story, big cast, multiple settings... etc... except it wouldnt have a HUGE impact if it happened real life.

Exactly Yi-long and English isn't even your first language :D

p.s - It also needs to be BIG in scope to The Fugitive isn't big in scope.

LOL, I guess Dutchies do have a word for epic. Should sound quite similar IIRC.

Heldendicht vs. episch. German version is better.

We do, but it's hardly ever used I think. 'Episch' indeed.
But I mainly know it from it's english form, so wouldnt have mattered if we did or did not have a Dutch term for it. I would have known what it meant either way ;)

Well, if you look the word up in the dictionary, you will see that it means nothing else than "narrative". So almost any movie could be epic. The ones that aren't would be those without a storyline. Or the latest Wong Jing film. :-)

Well... in that case I just will NOT look it up in the dictionary :D

Not quite Laser Disc :wink::

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=epic

We all know what epic means and DTD/KOTD (particularly DTD) really don't fit.

The UK cinema ad I saw on TV said "Jet Li in his final martial arts epic", that doesnt mean its his last MA film.

I hope this is playing near me (Hatfield or Hemel Hempstead).

Thanks Shen.

This DVD Times review says Mandarin:

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=61937

That said it reads to me like he doesn't know much of the history of Asian cinema so he may not have noticed. The BBFC site does or at least did clearly say Cantonese.

Watched it last night great film, took a while to get into the swing really and only a few great fights, but on the whole it indeed felt epic in scope, if not length.

Shame about the hidious dubing of practually all cast into one language  you can see their lips moveing to the real words and they are dubbed to be in line with everyone else, pretty sad if you ask me. Japanese, english etc.. do not speak their language in the film they are badly dubbed. The sad thing was some people did speak their own language, a few english people for instance, but only a few the rest were badly dubbed.

Odd they dubbed over the English speech in particular.

This isn't surprising though dubbing is very much part of Chinese cinema and it has been since I can remember.

I except it in the 70's and mabe even the 80's, but come on its 2006! for gods sake stop dubing people!

Fist of Legend must of been an expection then, as i recall the japanese speak their own language without any dubbing right? I seem to remember this on an HK VCD.
