I wonder if these cuts would still remain at the 12 certificate point. It's MGM we should be blaming not the BBC because they could've released them with a 15 rating.

To be fair to MGM the last DVD release HAD to be cut because the current dual certificates policy was not in place. They HAD to accept the same cut '12' as the previous video version. But MGM are to blame for the cinema and video '12' certificates, yes.

New rumour has it that GOLDENEYE has been passed "uncut" by the BBFC with a '15' cert for the UE DVD. So good news. By "uncut" I expect it's meant the PG-13 version as opposed to the original director's cut, which I personally doubt we'll ever see.

I wonder when the specification will be out? All this doesn't mean much until we know:

1. What the DVD contains
2. Is it Remastered
3. Is it uncut

The extras list was posted a while back in thedvdforums thread. They're packed to the teeth with extras. Eg Roger Moore recorded new commentaries for all his movies.

2. Is it Remastered

Yes. All except Suck Another Day have been painstakingly restored frame by frame by Lowry Digital. They'll be DTS/DD5.1 remixes on alot of the films too (not all of them though).

3. Is it uncut

Last I heard, License to Kill uncut will be included in the set.

Absolutely. This is fundamental to the relaunch - they have been
painstakingly remastered and digitally enhanced over a 2 year long
project. They now also feature 5.1 surround sound.

"The 1995 James Bond film "GoldenEye" starring Pierce Brosnan as 007 will be released uncut for the first time in the UK this year.

The forthcoming "Ultimate Edition DVD" will feature the original uncut version of the film, which had to have 15 seconds of footage removed from the theatrical release and previous DVD releases due to the 12 certificate issued by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).

Cover art for the new Ultimate Edition DVD notes the "uncut" status of the print, as well as a new 15 certificate. The only other film in the 007 series with as high a certificiate is "Licence To Kill", although there is no word yet on whether that will also be released uncut.

Am I correct in saying the extras above "Mission Control/Dossier" are the new extras and the ones below/including are the old extras? I think I am.

The bulk of the NEW extra features of GE, TND, TWINE look to be Deleted and Alternate scenes. All the meaty extras (commentaries, lengthy documentaries) are on the existing DVDs. This is looking more like the other so called Sony UE's. They're the only 007 films I consider keepers.

So whose going to be the first to trade/sell their existing DVDs? I'm tempted now we know they're going to be uncut BUT I need to see if GE, TND, TWINE are really Remastered and if they include DTS?

In particular TND. The extras don't hugely interest me.

p.s - I wonder if DAD: UE is just a repackage?

It 's not common, but they've been doing it with 007 for a while now. At first I think they just shipped the same UK prints, but since LTK the requirement for cuts hasn't been the same, with the BBFC being stricter toward physical violence. The producers of Goldeneye were advised by the MPAA what they would need to cut for an 'PG-13' and made the cuts at the same times as the UK ones (of which there were more due to the headbutting and earclapping). The producers saw no point in re-editing the film twice and so used the same footage assembled for both US and UK prints. This is why the death of Xenia for example is the same in both the US and UK. The MPAA didn't like the scene, so rather than produce a different version of the scene to specifically suit the MPAA, the makers just offered the UK take and hoped it wouldn't present any further problem. It's complicated.

I consider deleted scenes "meaty" and a real selling point.

So whose going to be the first to trade/sell their existing DVDs?

I'll definately be getting Licence to Kill for the uncut status alone. I'll replace my Roger Moore's for his new commentary tracks. OHMSS if they get it right this time (no mistaken cuts). The others I'd like to see comparisons. £11.99 isn't baaad. But it's pity Sony aren't doing a BOGOF lik MGM did last time.

The older films there is definitely a reason to upgrade for the Remaster and Extras alone BUT the Pierce Brosnan Bonds I'm not so sure, most of the Sony Ultimate Editions of late have barely been Remastered and a few Deleted Scenes over the existing DVDs doesn't make a worthy upgrade (maybe).

That said I'm a sucker for DTS on action films and as these 3 in particular are bound to get DTS I'll probably upgrade.

GE is a classic for doing so well to reinvent the 007 films, TND is just great fun Yeoh makes it the best Bond yet and TWINE is also decent (big Denise Richards boobies is never a bad thing)

Yes, Xenia's death was originally longer (more writhing and screaming as her spine snaps). The BBFC suggested that it wouldn't pass for a '12' and the MPAA likewise for a 'PG-13' therefore the filmmakers trimmed the scene down for the finished version. The MPAA expressed no concern with the headbutts or earclap so they were only edited additionally from the print submitted to the BBFC.

I kinda know what you mean... but as a big fan of the 007 series I'm really keen to see what's on offer.

That's of no interest to me, so you see we all have different ideas of what's important. I've no idea which films will have DTS, but certainly the Brosnan ones... Would be a waste of time for anything pre-Brosnan/pre-DTS but who knows...?

Yeah, I'd agree with all that. Though Denise was easily the weakest element of TWINE. Couldn't they have cast an attractive actress who looked like she had at least half a brain to work with?

Jeez why is everyone talking about LTK. It's not even one of the better Bonds and sure as hell doesn't stand above any other.

It's a series landmark and a strong action film in its own right. I don't accept the criticisms levelled at this film. If it wasn't 007 it would get more respect.

When are the R1's coming?
It seems odd that the 5.1 mixes on the R2's start at Thunderball and stop for a film thats only nine years later.

No idea, they're not planned nor have they been announced. I was just saying they're bound to come at some point and bound to include the mono.

As long as there's no new effects in the 5.1 I can live with the remixes. Studios usually do them well.

Of the pre 6-track stereo Bonds, only Thunderball and The Spy Who Loved Me were re-mixed on the original Bond DVDs. Since I have all the films up to Live And Let Die, I won't bother upgrading except for OHMSS - assuming it's uncut! - but I'll get the new DVDs of the post-Moonraker films.

You're right. The main studios are quite good with re-mixes - besides The Good, The Bad And The Ugly - especially compared with HK. I prefer to have the original audio - be it mono or Sensurround or whatever - but a subtle remix isn't the end of the world

Seperate stems - music and sound effects etc - no longer exist for the first three films, according to a poster on the DVD Forums. TSWLM was remastered into 5.1 on the first lot but AFAIK wasn't released in 6-track - may have been in standard Dolby. All the Bonds from Moonraker onwards had releases in 6-track stereo and/or Dolby Digital so there exists 5.1 ready sources
