Silent Hill

Directed by Christophe Gans. He did Brotherhood of the Wolf and Crying Freeman right? It's out now.

The reviews thus far have been pretty bad. I'll judge it for myself though, am a fan of the game series.

It has the plot of SH1, but draws alot of it's elements from SH2 - arguably the best in the series. SH2 is a spectacular game BTW.

Silent Hill 4.5/5

Absolutely incredible. I know nothing about the games but it is remarkably entertaining as a stand alone movie. Wonderfully written, acted and directed, it'd be difficult to imagine that such a mature, powerful drama could have originated from a video game. But then, we do have Christophe Gans and Roger Avary on board.

It does not rely on cheap jumps but proper consistant eerie atmosphere. It's more on par with stuff like Session 9, the Machinist and the Shining. There's a lot of disturbing imagery, contrasted by some beautiful gothic set pieces.

Original cut ran at 3 hours, but the studios forced Christophe Gans to cut it down. It's fine as it is just now but it'd be interesting to see what was cut out.

I want to play the games now.

Silent Hill 3 out of 5

Been waiting this film for a long time and really I could not wait to get to see it after the trailers and images I had seen.

The final film? Well I loved it for the 1st hour and a half and then BAM! it turned into a piece of crap and that last section was just dreadfully played out, and it was more like some stage play with appalling theatrics from moronic overactors, pity as that took away from everything that came before it. The less said about the flashback with voiceover the better. It’s not the director, it’s not anyone’s fault apart from the writers! Morons, and as the director helped write it I guess he deserves some of that pain.

Still Pyramid head was superb, some great moments in the film and really hidden away is a nice film, just cut out the last 30 minutes and it could have been so much better. I really liked it until that end section. Pyramid Head the guy with the massive heavy sword was flipping superb, and I defiantly wanted to see more of him as he was just an amazing creation and the short time he was on screen was the best the film got. He showed power in every move and when he was tearing people to bits and slamming his sword about the tone just jumped up a bit, and I came over all excited whenever I thought he was about to get near the cameras view. Still he was sparsely used sadly, and I wish he had been put into play far more, especially during the finale. As he could have done some great stuff to them evil doers. The trapped in the small room scene, where he attacks thru the door maybe ends up as the best scene in the film for me, its just really exciting stuff.

Some of the effects work was very beautiful to see happen in front of you, the creepier parts with babies and nurses made it spooky enough. The dimension transformation parts really were superbly brought to the screen with some eye popping visuals and CGI, and when the horns blow you know your in for something special, and in that sense it delivered many times. Plenty of disturbing bits too, with the toilet monster being a very surreal looking beastie which really was a sick looking thing, just shame all this good work is all stomped on by the end section. The violence in the film was fairly nasty, people were really torn apart, but sadly not until the big finale and everything before that wasn’t as graphic. Not that it needs buckets of blood, as it’s a fairly creepy film to start with. Once the barbed wire comes into play at the end mind you the film does go ballistic, and we see plenty of gruesome assaults, especially the final semi rape scene spraying of gallons of the red stuff like rain!

The way the film played out was the best for me. The early moments where Rose (played perfectly by the amazing Radha Mitchell) enters the white out town of Silent Hill are wonderful things. The lonely town is ominous and the snowing flakes of ash really set the whole sense of dread perfectly. The vastness of silence really add a lot to the film, the minimal noise levels are hard to get into and create some sense of loneliness as you try to hear into the distance. Just the lack of noise when it rains down ash is a marvellous thing to behold. It’s the very quiet parts of the story that make the film, as you never quite know what’s coming around the corner and those first 30 minutes set up the film very well, and ground it perfectly. Laurie Holden is also another great character, the cop on a mission and both Laurie and Radha are the best characters in the film by a mile, mainly as most of the others are so dull or dire and seen it all before that you don’t care too much for them. If it wasn’t for these two lovely ladies the film would have faltered long before the end sections collapse in on itself, they don’t do that much to be honest. They look great and perform for the camera and just seem comfortable in their roles, well until the finale where they are stuck with some awful direlogue and given a hard set of lines and functions to perform.

In the end it’s an odd film which if they had messed with the last section more, the film would have worked well. It’s just hard to say much when a film ends so theatrically, it just felt like they were all looking at me and speaking the lines from Macbeth or something, and the lines were also ridiculously ignorant, people do not talk like that, even in a film. I don’t mind the crazy ending, it’s the townsfolk and the whole plotline that I minded, once that kicks into play in the 4th quarter I really became angry, but as I said most that came before was worth seeing and hearing.

Christophe Gans has dropped the ball with the script and story, but it’s fairly well directed at times and some parts are well built up and full of tension. Nothing ever works as perfectly as they should sadly, and for that the film can never become a classic or even a great film, but for me I liked it on the whole and wish they would edit the silly townsfolk out of the film entirely as they just blew any chances of me thinking highly of it. It’s a flawed film with some stupid moments as the film gets towards that ending, but hey I liked it and do want to see it again. Only next time I will just fast forward thru the awful acting at the end, as really its like a totally different film from some crappy Hammer film in fact.

Burn Ye Oldie Witchie indeed!

I hate to say it guys... but I rarely agree with you.

If the general consensus among critics is that a film is pish it usually is...

personally tho i rarely read reviews of movies, i search through imdb, or torrent sites and find titles that catch my attention, and also reccomendations of friends that enjoy similar movies to me....i read reviews of the myth, and friends were really hyping me up about it, and it was a big let down, which is what happens 7/10 times when i read reviews and get hyped about them. also i found it wise to never judge a movie until i watched it, weather it is deemed good ar bad, if it seems interesting its best ot go into it without regarding what peopel say otherwise i find myself looking for faults and stuff.

Shen isnt Bring it on Review in the wrong thread :D I like the film by the way :D

Far too many people judge films on OTHER peoples opinions, which is very sad indeed. I am glad I am not joe public thats for sure.

Personally I detest most Critics, they are so above everything and get paid so much cash its a joke anyway. If a films pish because Citics say so, then plenty of films you like Mark must be total shite as critics hate some of you personal faves.

Just pay the £6 and watch it, then come back here and say "omg Bisc, you were totally right. I guess Romero was kinda right also."
