Eleventh 'Star Trek' in the works...
Mission: Impossible III director J.J. Abrams is going from Cruise control to warp speed.
A couple of weeks before the arrival of Tom Cruise and M:I3, Abrams has committed to produce the eleventh Star Trek feature film and there are plans for him to direct as well, Paramount Pictures announced Friday.
Abrams also will write the script with his Mission Impossible III co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, Paramount spokeswoman Nancy Kirkpatrick said.
The studio is hoping to release the new Star Trek film in 2008.
No plot for the movie has been nailed down and no one has been cast for the film.
The Star Trek franchise covers several centuries of a future in which humans make their way in a universe populated by a bewildering variety of aliens, from the ultra-logical Vulcans to the merciless, hive-like Borg. The starship Enterprise in various incarnations was the focus of the original series and many of the movies. Two Star Trek TV series followed the exploits aboard a space station called Deep Space Nine and a marooned spaceship, Voyager.
Abrams created the hit ABC series Lost and Paramount hopes that Lost producers Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk will produce the movie, Kirkpatrick said.
William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy portrayed Kirk and Spock in the original Star Trek TV show in the 1960s and in numerous movies but "they have not yet been approached," Kirkpatrick said.
Shatner, 75, currently stars in the hit series "Boston Legal" winning an Emmy for his role as an egotistical attorney.
Star Trek movies have grossed more than $1-billion (U.S.) but the last one, Star Trek: Nemesis, four years ago did relatively weak box office and got tepid reviews, while the last TV incarnation, Star Trek: Enterprise, was ratings-challenged and was cancelled last year.
With the new movie, "we certainly are hoping to bring Star Trek back to its former glory," Kirkpatrick said.

Abrams Objects To Inaccurate Reporting On Trek XI
J.J. Abrams, who will be producing the upcoming eleventh Star Trek film, refused to comment on whether rumours that it would deal with Kirk and Spock at Starfleet Academy were accurate and even suggested that he might not be helming the film himself.
"The whole thing was reported entirely without our cooperation," said Abrams to Empire. "People learned that I was producing a Star Trek film, that I had an option to direct it, they hear rumours of what the thing was going to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate."
Abrams added that those involved in the production had "made a pact not to discuss any specifics" of the story. StarTrek.com had claimed that the story would center around Kirk and Spock's first meeting and their first adventure together in space. Empire noted that Abrams is a fan of the original series and quoted him as saying, "Those characters are so spectacular. I just think that...you know, they could live again."
StarTrek.com had cited Daily Variety and "sources at Paramount Pictures" in their statement that Abrams would direct as well as produce the upcoming eleventh feature film. Abrams, who is directing MI3 - the first film to utilise the soundstages at Paramount long reserved for Star Trek series from The Next Generation through Enterprise - had spoken briefly months ago about his ambition to be involved in a Star Trek movie to Now Playing Magazine.
"I will happily get involved in any new incarnations of anything that Leonard Nimoy was involved in. And that’s all I'll say about that," Abrams declared. Pressed about whether he would only be interested in Star Trek if Nimoy were personally involved, Abrams replied, "I think he's too busy doing those commercials now."

And that is just being polite! You didn't miss much. Enterprise was fucking dire and the last 2 movies were forgettable popcorn films at best.
I read about this elsewhere and their idea of using a young Kirk and Spock sounds absolutely awful. Personally I prefer to see a big-screen version of Farscape or another sequel to Firefly/Serenity rather than another bland Star Trek movie

Yeah, the young Kirk & Spock does sound like a terrible idea.sky75 wrote:I read about this elsewhere and their idea of using a young Kirk and Spock sounds absolutely awful.
Enterprise was the final nail in the coffin for Trek as far as I'm concerned. Although I'd be interested in a Section 31-centric film (the omnious shadow organisation of the Federation seen in DS9).Personally I prefer to see a big-screen version of Farscape or another sequel to Firefly/Serenity rather than another bland Star Trek movie
I never really liked Farscape, but Firefly was awesome. -Farscape is deader than a door nail, but IMO Firefly has some potential for a mini-series or Direct-to-DVD/TV sequels IMO - the Serenity DVD has been selling like hot cakes for Universal and they own the Scifi Channel, who produce the fantastic Battlestar Galactica (and 100's of shitty low budget TV movies). Hey, a BSG movie could potentially be cool as well.

I'm so pleased Star Trek 11 is coming. I've been worried Star Trek was dead.
I really hope they can come up with a really strong and epic script like the days of the Original Crew films once have. It's gone down hill badly since Star Trek 6 IMO (as far as the films are concerned).
I've enjoyed the TNG films but they're just not as good, many being TV movies really.

i only ever watched the next generation and voyager episodes. i liked patrick stewart as an actor, but mainly i watched it as late night tv on sky one....only really found data funny but it had some quite enjoyable eps. and enterprise was more average. i never watched the films all the way through, they could naver hold my attention, an hour episode is enough. tuvok was cool too. the older ones just looked too fake, and shatner was damn annoying.
my fathers a real trekkie tho, watched most of the episodes, and the films.
but then how far can it go on for? 15? 20? 30 movies? surely there is a point where they will have to say enough is enough....its like saying they will create 11 rocky movies, or 11 bond movies, the storylines would just get stupidly worse.

really? lol never watched one of them, well i tried but eh failed misearbly by falling asleep, only know about 4 of their titles....
my god they need to stop, the ones i tried to watch were so damn boring, and the storylines were the same near enough....
but nayway, i guess if they can pull off a good storyline in this, and make it good also, then it could work, seems like a long shot tho.

First teaser poster:-

source wrote: J.J. Abrams is still mum on details of the Star Trek XI screenplay he's writing with Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci. However, he hopes to produce a story that will please die-hard trekkers while making new fans from among ordinary filmgoers. "We absolutely feel beholden to the fans," the producer of the next Trek film told Variety, "but at the same time, we have to recognize that you can't only go out and make a movie or TV shows for a group of people that live and breathe a show." Abrams intends to make a film that "simultaneously speaks to the people who hold Star Trek close to their heart, and at the same time tell a story that resonates [with everyone]."
Abrams — who has not yet decided if he will direct — feels that balance can be struck through the powerful themes familiar to viewers from previous series and films. "Star Trek to me was always … a show about purpose, about faith vs. logic, about science vs. emotion, about us vs. them. It was its own world, and yet it was our world.
"[Trek] was always my favorite when it was a little bit scary, when they would deal with beaming something on the ship that was an incredible mystery or there was a clear threat.
"All of these things I loved about the series is what we're working to incorporate into the story for the movie."
Abrams elaborates on this vision in an interview with the latest edition of Cinefantastique magazine:
"The key to doing any of these things correctly is that it has to treat the situation and the characters with the exact respect and integrity that you'd treat any drama, whether it happens to be a comedy or science-fiction. You can't tell the story in a cheap or pandering way, […] it just doesn't hold water."
Ultimately, Star Trek XI is intended to be not just one more go at some box office profit, but a revival of the entire franchise. Abrams, for his part, is optimistic about Trek's future. "I'm a real fan of Star Trek and I think there is without question life left in that series. I think that the fact that they ran so many series for so long, including an after-the-film series, is sort of remarkable, and I think that this downtime is only good for it."
Paramount is similarly hopeful about reviving Trek. "We talked about Star Trek and turning the biggest franchise in Paramount history [around] for a rebirth," studio president Gail Berman recently told Variety. "[Hiring Abrams]was the natural progression."

Sword fights, alien monsters, sex... yes, this is reminiscent of 60's Trek. The pontificating about ethics and solving problems with diplomacy didn't come until TNG and later.
