Crying Fist - 2.5/5
The characters were hard to like (a good thing) but also felt distant. I didn't care about them that much, and wasn't really interested in them. Also, the film was supposed to be realistic and downbeat, yet the whole thing was executed with typical Korean style and slickness. It still wasn't a bad film. It was mostly enjoyable, with some really great scenes here and there.

Dance of the Drunk Mantis - 3.5/5
The first half was great fun with nice fights and basically the whole Drunken Master / SITES cast appearing one by one. There was also some great humour. After that the film slows down a bit. This is where the film would benefit from a charismatic old school lead like Jackie or Sammo. The last 15 minutes however is excellent again. More great fighting and some even crazier humour. The soundtrack is far from the greatness of SITES, but it's pretty decent nevertheless. I liked how the film was borrowing music from Argento's Suspiria.

Address Unknow - 3.5/5
The first half was pretty decent with some really good scenes here and there. The second half is excellent. I liked the way the film was very serious yet humoristic at the same time. The terrible american actors didn't bother me too much. I may raise the rating to 4 when I get to see the film again (with proper soundtrack).

The Singing Detective - 2.5/5
Some ingenious scenes here and there (including all scenes with Adrien Brody) but overall a bit uneven film. Had a lot more potential than what was used. And... I didn't think I would ever say this... but Katie Homes was lovely.

+ a bunch of films I saw for the second, third, fourth etc. time
Picnic: Liked even more than the last two times I watched it. 4.5/10
Three Extremes: Miike - 4/5, Chan - 3/5, Park - 4.5/5, Overall - 4/5
Alien 3 (the 'assembly cut'): Better than the TC. 4.5/5

Initial D : 4,75/5

First time I've seen this on DVD.

Kenny Bee, Anthony Wong, Chapman To, Edison Chen, Shawn Yue, Jay Chou and Ann Suzuki all in the same film. Almost sounds too good to be true.

Awesome racing scenes, weak storyline, cool music, awesome racing scenes, bad acting, awesome racing scenes... I didn't forget to mention the racing scenes, did I ?

Finally I can get rid of my Fast and Furious DVD.

Can't wait to get my hands on the anime series.
Is the sequel still on ? Haven't heard about it for a while...

I've rented the DVD of the Tintin feature films from the '60's too. Unfortunately according to the specs they only contain English tracks.

The Myth : 3,75/5

Had very low expectations before watching this (hence why I waited so long before doing so

) but it turned out to be quite fun.

The epic flashback scenes don't really work for me (the vertical stretching is ridiculous), and the indian comedy scenes really slow down the rythm.

Still, the ending is magnificent (despite some dodgy bits of CGI) and the movie ended exactly how I wanted it too (no silly hollywood happy ending).

A solid 3.75 for me (as in "good but not great").

The movies are "The Calculus Affair" "Mystery of Shark Lake" and "Prisoners of the Sun"

BTW I too had low expectations for The Myth but really enjoyed it, however IMO the ending was poor.

You gotta be kidding me ! The ending is my favourite part. :x

The movie is so slow with the scenes shot in India and the flashback. The pace picks up (and the story becomes coherent) at the 80-minute mark (when Jackie enters the cave).

Lord of War 4.5/5

By far the most profound and poignant of Andrew Niccol's works. A stark reminder of "evil prevails" - the film's underlying message. As long as there is lust for bloodshed, there will always be exploitation in some shape or form. As expected, Niccol executes a sensitive topic with a touch of satire and humour. Gotta admire his exquisite use of filters, lighting and colours - not to mention his choice of music.

Not sure if anyone else is an Andrew Niccol fan but I'd also recommend Gattaca and S1M0ne. Also check out Truman Show (which he wrote). Superb filmmaker.

I think Gattaca is a really, really good film which doesn't seem to get the merit it deserves. By that, I mean lesser films have been raved about more.

9 Souls 4/5

Another incredible spectacle from director Toshiaki Toyoda. I had pretty high expectations after sitting through the excellent Pornostar; I'm happy to say that I'm not disappointed. Nine inmates of all varieties break out of prison to look for some hidden loot, courtesy of a 10th prisoner who failed to escape. Ultimately, these social misfits search for their own personal paradise. Toyoda takes us on an emotional journey, sharing laughter and sorrow as he explores how these guys, ranging from porn kings to muderers, have their heart set on making things even. Clocking in at around two hours, the audience is given plenty of time to study the primary characters, despite there being nine of them. Alright, so you're not going to receive a thorough examination but enough information is provided to obtain a general overview. As with Pornostar, this film is blessed with an awesome soundtrack - quite similar guitar riffs in fact. Now I just need to check out Blue Spring.

Precisely. I'd also like to add that I think Andrew Niccol is a really, really good filmmaker and doesn't seem to get the merit he deserves. Most people have no idea who he is... and only kinda know about his films.

Lord of War was marketed to look like a Michael Bay style blockbuster. I would've ignored it if I hadn't found out about Niccol's involvement.

Agree about "Lord of War". I love this film and will get the DVD once it is released in Germany. The only weakness of the film is that the characters were not made to look any older, which you would expect as the film takes place over a decade or so.

As for "9 Souls", which version did you see? I have got the ArtsMagic disc a month before its actual release or so and still didn't come round watching it.

Tom didnt you like the parts in India? I thought they were good fun, there are some good fights considering Jackie's age (at this point the film is more a typical "Jackie" movie, like a goofy action comedy). Plus Samantha is fit

I know what you mean its not a typical Hollywood ending but:
William is in league with the bad guy? Jeez how predictable is that? There should of been a big end fight. Still enjoyed the film though.

Interestingly Alan Tam also performs a Cantonese version (featured in the trailer). I prefer Jackie's song "Flight of the Dragon" to Alan Tam's "Lorelei" (you know, over the end credits).
Also the famous stunt that went wrong (where Jackie smashed his head on a rock) is shown silent in the credits when the music cuts out - I'm told at the behest of Jackie.
