Yes but certainly NOT vegetarian.

There's a big difference between being vegetarian because you don't like meat or ethical reasons then choosing not to eat it most of the time.

For most vegetarians it's very much an ethical thing which as you've said your self you would eat a burger again you don't have.
Yi-Long wrote:They should make something that tastes even better then meat and chicken and (maybe) fish... MAYBE then people would stop eating it...
Try Quorn. They've not managed to turn it into fish (yet) but some Quorn substitutes taste very much like meat. I've fooled meat eating friends.

Quorn Beef burgers are gorgeous. They're much better for you too.

Isn't Ouorn like tofu (sp?) I've never had it BTW, though my mum has soya milk - not because she's vegetarian, she's apparently allergic to normal milk (something like that anyway).

Nope very different in all ways.

"Quorn is simply the brand name we use to highlight those products which contain our special ingredient.

Quorn showed themselves to have associated benefits of good taste, health, convenience and nutritional credentials which have never been more relevant in today's world of growing obesity and chronic health issues."

Quorn is a mycoprotein and in it's raw form fungus (a relative of the mushroom) but unlike tofu which always smells, looks and tastes like tofu it can be moulded into pretty much any meet with striking similarity to the meat you're conveying.

Quorn Bacon doesn't work (it has the texture of crisps) but otherwise it's an amazing invention.

http://www.quorn.co.uk/cmpage.aspx?section=WhatIsQuorn

I've only ever found it in Europe :( , there is a American Quorn site so who knows.

"Quorn™ foods' wholesome and great-tasting meals and snacks have been enjoyed in Europe for nearly 17 years, and the good news is this exciting new food choice is now available in the U.S.!"

p.s - I've just found out Quorn is a British invention :D

There's uncertainty as to whether or not Quorn is safe for human consumption, actually.

Really I didn't know that. Explain?

That said scientists never make their mind up. You ask one and she'll say this causes cancer ask another and he'll disagree.

I'll continue to eat it as it's an amazing invention/food. You get so much more choice. It's a pity most meat eathers think you have to "live" off beans and grass (except for cattle who actually eats grass?).

It's a fungus, a mould, not a mushroom.

When exactly was fish considered not a meat? It's from an animal, I don't get the distinction.

Coming from a Catholic background, we didn't eat meat on Friday but did eat fish. I always found this weird.

I think you'll find that vegetarians who eat fish/seafood simply don't like the taste of meat. Therefore, unlike Brad and Shen, their decision to be vegetarian is not driven by ethical reasons. However, considering fish/seafood tastes nothing like meat/poultry, you'll find that some people are happy to be vegetarians but eat fish.

My Japanese friend would fall into that category. In fact, she wouldn't even eat meat substitutes (i.e. quorn) because it tastes/feels too much like meat. She'd happily butcher a lamb for us to eat, but would just not eat it herself.

HTH.

I could go on here and talk about how mass-producing corn is far more detrimental to the environment than raising livestock and crops on the same farms in a symbiotic relationship, but I won't.

I'm reminded of the episode of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" where they had created an animal who actually wanted to be eaten. They inquired to the animal about vegetables and he replied that he knows many vegetables which wouldn't want to be eaten.

That show was classic, I should try to see it on DVD sometime.

Oh yeah, I remember that bit Eva, with the "Dish of the Day" The vegetables part isn't in the TV series (I think), but in the book.

Hmmm, seeing stories like this makes you want to revisit the idea of becoming a vegetarian:

Haha this line made me laugh:
As the family's Sunday roast lamb was being carved, two balls appeared in the meat.
