Contrary to what I said earlier, I'll stick around for a bit.

Software works on an individual basis. Mario Kart is a good example. If you have it on the DS, then one cartridge can allow a few people to play. However, on the GameCube, each person must have a copy of the game. Upto 4 people can play on the same GC, but if you want to play on a network then others have to have their own copy.

Well, okay... say it is no network game. Let's say it is "Mario Kart 64" on Nintendo 64.

Oh man, I've gotta get to sleep. :)

Mario Kart 64 is fine to be played by the maximum number of people on one machine. If I remember rightly, the N64 had 4 ports on it, yes? So, four people only.
This is all more to do with lawful use. You can use the game on someone else's machine, as long as you don't make them a copy to play on whilst you're not there.

LOL! Sorry, mate! It's just that I cannot believe that I can not lend any of my DVDs to a friend. That's just bull, because that would mean I can not watch my films together with other people. It's the same.

On those DVD warning screens isn't there some bollocks about "not inviting members of the public to view the DVD, irrespective of whether an enterance fee is charged or not"
I agree it doesnt make sense, it says you can't watch DVDs with your friends or loan them out WTF? :?

That's spefically talking about licensed premises etc . . . not home use.

Two people have access to the same product, and the product has only been bought once. Clearly illegal.
If you "lending" the film you don't have access to it silly

Sure it's legal to lend a DVD to a friend as long as they don't copy it. The DVD itself belongs to you.

But making a backup copy I'm sure is a myth.

AH-HEM ! :D
Does anybody read the copyrights notice on DVDs ?

Unauthorized Copying, reproduction, hiring, lending, public performance and broadcasting prohibited.

Legally, you can watch a DVD with your friends. But only if each viewer has bought the DVD as well.

So are you questioning, ridiculing and attacking our LAWS, which we have democratically established, and are you therefore criticising our democratic system, thus our freedom.

You, my friend, are an enemy of freedom. I'm calling George Dubya Bush, as I deem you a threat to civilisation, our freedom, and our democracy!

I'm just questioning the idea that its illegal to watch a DVD with your mates unless all of you own a copy of the film?! WTF? Whats the point in watching the DVD together then? Some of us on Bullets must be ctiminals then as we swap DVDs - lock us up!

Surely that's the material NOT the actual DVD. I find it very hard to believe you can't legally lend a DVD to someone when you own the DVD.

How are you breaking copyright when you're not actualy copyying it? Period.

You ARE copying it.
You are giving someone access to a material/media that he didn't pay for.
The material belongs to the studio. What you bought is the right to watch it, but not to let anybody else watch it.
You are providing a copy (even if it's the original).

Of course, I'm just talking about what most laws "say". I'm sure a judge wouldn't send you to the electric chair for lending a cheap HK DVD to a friend.

And he/she is copying it how? Access doesn't mean the same as copy.

Nah I don't think you're right on this one Tom old bean.

The copyright warning that you'll find on every french DVD:

"L'oeuvre fixée sur ce support est exclusivement destinée à l'usage privé dans le cadre du cercle familial. Toute autre utilisation (reproduction, prêt, échange, diffusion en public avec ou sans perception de droit d'entrée, télédiffusion, en partie ou en totalité, exportation sans autorisation) est strictement interdite sous peine de poursuites judiciaires."

Rough english translation:

"The material on this media is to be made available to the family circle of the buyer only (family and "very close friends"). Reproducing, lending, trading or displaying this media in public is strictly forbidden.

Is the british law different ?

The problem with that is..?

:D
Tom I think the British law is about the same.
