Lone Wolf Comparision with R1, R2 and R0

Post by slasher13 »

Hi there,

As some of you know, I recently got the thai disk for Lone Wolf and Cub, and I have put up 2 captures for you to check out the difference of Animeigo, ArtsMagic and the Thai release.

It is very close between the Animeigo and Thai, but the thai release is a bit darker

Check it out on the Following WebPage

Kind Regards

The images change very slowly Slasher.
I found the colours to be not quite as harsh on the Thai as on the R1, the transfer is still very good though.

Hey Grim, i think they both have the same sharpness of the transfer, it just that R1, is a marginally brighter than the thai release. Its not noticeable on the tv thou :)

Salaam slasher!

Great, thanks! I can't believe I still have the ArtsMagic release and didn't upgrade, yet.

BTW, did you guys know that ArtsMagic are re-releasing their LW&C boxset? I'm wondering now whether I shall wait a bit longer.

Nope, sorry. I can ask them though. I was once planning a samurai special on my Fulltime Reviews website and asked them for a LW&C box. They asked me if I wanted to have the current boxset or rather wait for the re-release. I asked how long it would take them to release it and they replied telling me over a year. Clearly I went for the current release. They were fine with me reviewing the films, but asked me not to comment on the DVDs, as they were of low quality and hence they'd be releasing another box in the future. This was about a year ago, though.

Salaam Lost Dragon,

Ahhh I haven't heard about ArtMagic re-releasing Lone Wolf. I'm thinking they are going to licence the r1 image, do an NTSC to PAL conversion.. (may have ghosting). But they may not. For 20 pounds for the thai release it is a great buy, the comparision was to show people you really didn't need to the get the r1 set as thai release is just as good.

If you ever do a get the new artsmagic would love to see how it stacks up compared to r1 and r0.

Artsmagic are a poor company from my experience :( every dvd from them I have owed (and sold) or seen, looked a joke. Not sure if they have ever produced a good quality dvd?

That comparison is nice, the R1 still looks better in clarity and focus detail, but for the cash the Thai is a stunner :) Artsmagic is beyond a joke :D

The R1 is a teeny bit brighter (but hardly much) on the comparison. IMO there is nothing between it and the Thai.

I thought the R2 releases were uncut now in the "Wolf Pack" box?

Did they re-release them uncut? I just remember reading some of the old discs were cut.

I didnt notice it on my TV :? Slasher says you won't actually notice it when watching it on DVD, sharpness wise the R1/Thai are the same.

Seems to be saying the cuts are still the same (I think?) - I thought it was Sword of Vengeance that was cut?

On a TV its almost imposible to see anything different :) on a PC you can as its easier as you just slick instantly between pictures and the R1 is more sharp for sure, the Thai looks sligltly fuzzy compared to it. But as peope dont watch dvds on their PC it doesnt matter much :) unless your TV is stunning.

My "TV" _is_ stunning.

So _it_ matters.

And the R1 looks "vastly superior" in detail and sharpness compared to the thai. Then again, I hear the Toho R2 look "vastly superior" in comparison with the R1s :D
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

There is no Toho release for LW&C. But their Lady Snowblood does look (and sound) vastly superior to Animeigo, even though it's far from perfect.

He's got a projector.

The differences of the Thai and Animego don't bother me, so I'll go for the Thai option.

In my opinion they are good. It's true that their DVDs aren't up there with the likes of HKL or PA, but they release great titles, which I can't see any other company releasing with the same amount of special features like the audio commentaries or interviews. I liked the following of their releases:

- Full Metal Yakzua
- Sabu
- Young Thugs: Innocent Blood (one of their best releases)
- Young Thugs: Nostalgia (also one of their best releases in every aspect)
- 9 Souls (wonderful film)
- Bullet Ballet (Great DVD, too in my opinion)
- Em Embalming (good film)
- Onibi (awesome film. One of the best titles they released. Unfortunately, the picture quality lacks.)
- Mobsters' Confessions is also a great film.

To sum up, I'd say that none of their DVD releases looks as bad as their release of LW&C.

You should be fine Bisc, at less than £20 the Thai is a steal.

Uhm, sorry about mixing up my LW&C with LSB :D

Yes, I got a front-end projector system running at 106" :D It's so sweet :D

(And it's a properly calibrated expensive projector...)

The R1 looks marginally sharper but for the price difference I'd get the Thai box set.
