I've yet to see a Kurosawa film :o . I have Seven Samurai and Yojimbo but haven't watched them yet. I plan to get the Ran R4 DVD (DD5.1 and the documentary in the correct AR of 1.66:1 over the UK R2) some day.

I checked out your comparison of Throne of Blood too, I enjoyed that (the right word?) when I saw the BFI disc so may get the Criterion actually, which has a commentary track and oter extras and probably better translations than the BF1 R2

I bet the Criterion Throne Of Blood isnt cheap though ;)

Sorry for turning this into a Kurosawa thread ;)
You really must see Seven Samurai, it's a superb, brilliant film. Its long but dont let that put you off.

Brad, no I dont mean that, I mean the entire thing is in DD2.0 if you choose the longer version. Not just the deleted scenes, but the whole film. If you choose the international cut, then you can get all of it in DTS etc.

And I know this cause I have it.

Thanks Degeneration.

That makes little sense as most of the footage is effectively being used twice for each cut. I guess they didn't want it to flip between DD2.0 and DD5.1/DTS but surely that would be easily fixed by having it all in DD5.1 or DTS.

What a mess!

Does it freeze/pause on your DVD player when watching the DC?

I'll leave it on here as an information point. Fans who want the extras may as well get the Premier Asia DVD.

p.s - Thanks Grim too.

Bradavon why not acttually watch a Kurasawa before going ahead and buying loads! bit pointless buying loads if you hate one of them they are all very similar and your stuffed.

Throne of Blood isnt a particulatry great Kurasawa film, but the Criterion dvd is tops.

I didn't bother watching the full length cut on the DVD as I wanted the DTS audio! So I don't know if it freezes or pauses. Don't have time to check just now either.

UPDATES:

To include information on the "Kurosawa Documentary" and the "Bruce Lee: Lost Interview" DVDs.

I've also moved "Volcano High" to the next post it's not a decent purchase at all.

p.s - The "Bruce Lee: Lost Interview" DVD is identical to the UK Region 2, cover art is the only thing that differs them.

On the UK Region 2 the Eastern Eye logo appears when it's loading. I know because my UK R2 arrived today. I forgot the R4 was out now which is a pity as the cover art is nicer and I'd rather give my money to EE than Firefly.

The UK R2 does come in a nice shiny slip-case though. The DVD while a bit expensive is worth it for the interview alone.

From what I can see on that review the dvd is great and the picture and sound are top, and the xtras too, not sure why you say its bad?

they said

The video quality is mostly very good –which makes the imperfections all the more glaring.

The audio quality is very good indeed

The bonus materials are copious, but need better subtitling.

so for me its very good as theres no subs on my Korean version anyway, some subs are better than none.

I agree with Romero, the review doesn't seem to bad. I've yet to watch the movie so I may go for this if it's cheap.

How can you say they all look pants? Sure most aren't to good but some/many of the DVDs listed at the start look very good.

Musa isn't cropped it's just in a different aspect ratio. I'll let the guys at Madman explain: HERE

It's not always a good idea to take reviews on face value!

I asked Madman a while ago:

* Twilight Samurai: Will it have DTS and any of the 4 hours worth of extras on the Japanese DVD?
* The Eye: Will it have DTS and any extras?
* Ong-Bak: Will it be the full Thai uncut version or the shorter international cut?
* Taegukgi: Brotherhood of War: Will it have DTS and any extras?
* Violent Cop: Will it have any extras?
* Breaking News: Will it have DTS and any extras?
* Rashmon: A silm chance I know but will it have any of the Criterion extras?

And Chris on the boards has finally replied:

Some of these titles are still unconfirmed, but for others I can say:

* The Eye: DTS, Dolby 5.1, two Making of featurettes, trailers, maybe some more.
* Violent Cop: just theatrical trailer... couldn't source much for this title.
* Breaking News: DTS, Dolby 5.1 and some extras, including one we filmed ourselves.

It seems odd to advertise titles you cannot confirm you have the rights too!

I'm very pleased about The Eye it looks like finally we will get an anamorphic, DTS and extras DVD! Breaking News is good news too. I see little point adding these to the first post until more is confirmed.

Updates:

Info on "Arahan" sourced from the Madman boards. I can't find any reviews. It looks like a decent DVD though.

Yep sure do.
If you want a Pro. review of Arahan from the net I think you have to wait until retail.

Just got my EE Princess Blade dvd in today and its very nice except for one thing (although i'm not sure its the disc itself causing it). While the picture quality is very good, i'm getting some 'roughness' in the movement of the image. Its difficult to discribe...its not like the image is choppy or anything that major, it just does not flow smoothly.
I am trying to figure out if this is being caused by the disc itself, or that fact i'm converting the PAL signal to NTSC with my dvd player. I have only played a few other PAL titles on it, and they seem to work ok. Anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be?

Could you try outputing it as pure PAL? I realise your TV may not handle PAL to well but I'm assuming it will be watchable enough to test.

What are the extras like? Are you from the Americas?

Have you tried it on another DVD player or TV? I'd also post a comment here:

p.s - Thanks for the info.

Hey Bradavon....Yes i live in the US so i naturally watch movies on NTSC equipment. The only ways i'm able to play a PAL signal is with my region free player, or with my dvd-rom. Playing through my dvd-rom it seems to have the same roughness to the image movement. However, this could have something to do with the fact i'm using an NTSC based monitor.

Another thought that crossed my mind is the fact that the source material is NTSC based, and the PAL conversion that EE did may not have gone perfectly smooth. But that is all speculation until we get feedback from someone who has played it on pure PAL equipment.

I'm 95% sure all monitors are neither PAL ro NTSC, they don't work the same. They are non-interlaced too.

I suggest you use Google to search for reviews. The review at DVD.net.au doesn't mention any problems (see the first post for the link).

gah i hate this. I think your right about the monitors, but if that's true then the problem must be unrelated to my dvd player. I'm unable to find any other reviews for it, and as you said the one at dvd.net.au does not mention any problems of this nature.
