Cheers for the pic Mark ;) :D, I really liked Sin City, and would give it 5/5. It really did appeal to me, an excellent popcorn movies, a mix of film noir, sex and blood....

Also finger chewing... Mmm delicious... kind of erotic when you think about it.

Geochilmaru (aka The Showdown) 2/5

On the one hand, you have an admirable effort from a bunch of ametuer filmmakers. However the film is still far from satisfying, suffering from a non-rigid storyline that feels a bit too "fanboy-ish". The concept was interesting but I think a little more time and money would've helped shape the film better. The fights were impressive but weren't capturered very well (with the exception of one or two nice shots).

The DVD picture quality was horrible. I know it's low budget but that high contrast really hurt my eyes.

Champion 2.5/5

Rather bland boxing biopic.

DareDevil: Director Cut - 4/5

Okay I seen the original version, and was not really impressed by that. It was an okay movie, but felt it was really short and didn't do the comic justice. When I picked up DareDevil DC cheap from HMV sale, I wondered if it will improve the movie, and to my amazement it has. It is a better cut of the film, the character are more fleshed out. Now you can feel for the main hero.

Extras are very low, but a good featurette which explains about the Director Cut and the director saying this was suppose to be on the original dvd using branching technique, however the main reason why it wasn't was because of the various soundstrack taking too much space (plus people would doubledip)

Anyway great movie, and this should have been in the cinema, not the cut up version.

The Proposition - 4/5

Bleak and gritty film that starts off slowly (IMO) but it is very good, really capturing the violence and poverty of 19th century Australia. It is depressing to think how Aboriganies (sp?) were looked upon back then by most of the population. I'm not sure but I think real Aboriganies featured in the movie.
The film is quite violent, I really liked the period detail and harsh scenery and Ray Winstone gives an excellent performance as the UK policeman who offers a member of a gang named Charlie a deal - bring in your older brother, or the younger brother Mikey (who is innocent) will be hanged on Chritsmas Day.
I spotted a factual error though, several times we see the Union Flag flying on a pole, and even though the film is set in the 19th century, it looks exactly like the modern British flag. Ireland didnt become united with the rest of Great Britain until 1901.

King Kong (1933) 4.5 - 5/5

Really, really enjoyed this, really great entertainment :D OK, so perhaps to my 21st century eyes the acting seems wooden and the effects look primitive but remember the film is 73 years old and way, way ahead of its time. It was also a different era, so a different style of acting.
There is not much character development (and hence emotional impact) here compared to the 2005 version - but in other ways the film is just as good and entertaining as its' bigger brother. It is much shorter, so I found the pacing a lot better in a way.
The scene where Kong fights a T-Rex (something recalled in the 2005 version) is great, and I loved the rampage scene in NY too, with Kong biting people and stamping on one guy like a cigarette :D
Landmark film that is also great fun.
Also the transfer on the R1 SE is stunning for a film made in 1933.

Hostel - 4/5
Eli Roth followup to Cabin Fever (Which was okay not brilliant). He has improved with this film, really enjoyed the movie. It's not as sick as some people make out, the gore is similar to Saw. Eli has improved with the character development, so you do feel for the main character. There are loads of T&A in the first half of the movie, then it really switches over to the gore on the 2nd part. However, I did feel that the ending was rushed alot and too convinent in some parts, especially the main hero killing the two girls and the guy - This really felt like it was tacked on. It does close the whole movie, but it should have been handled a better way.
One thing also is that Quentin Tarantino has a hand in this movie, so of course you will see his movies popping up like Pulp Fiction, and in the credit scenes it says Quentin Tarantino Present... Oh please... come on... he is getting annoying.

Anyway Eli Roth second film is better than he debut, so if he can make the next one even better, that he is on a winning streak :). Him and Neil Marshall may be the next John Carpertner and Wes Craven (okay that going a bit too far, but they may be the next big horror director).

Walikum Salaam Grim, Yeah had the 1933 dvd when it first came out. The transfer is very good for its time. Haven't watched the trailer, the packaging is fantastic, loved it, and also the postcard of the original posters.

Haven't watched Peter Jackson deleted scene - he done a recreation of the spider pit using 1933 technology :). I haven't seen the 2005 version yet, that is on my next things to watch.

When someone says Salaam to you in Arabic, this is what you would say back to the person.

Here is what it is in full, Normally some people say Salaam as a greeting

First Greetings:
As-Salaam-Alaikum
Peace be upon you

Then the other greeter responds with:
Wa-alaikum as-salaam
Peace be also upon you

Kind Regard

Shall We Dance? (Original Japanese version) 3/5

I think I prefered the US remake. Both films are basically the same (the US version being a carbon copy of the original) but I didn't really like the actors in the Japanese version. Performances were either too bland or weird. Neither films are classics though.

Layer Cake 2/5

Absolutely nothing special about this at all. After reading lots of good reviews, I must say I was rather disappointed at the end.

You do? LOL. It's funny, because in Arabic, there is nothing like a Pinyin in Chinese. So "Salaam" is actually spelt السلام
If you can't read the Arabic letters, here is a picture:

Cool... so it's like a Vanilla Sky/Open Your Eyes job... except the film's inferior... (IYO)...

I'm keen to check out both versions.

Fearless 4.5/5

Jet Li last period martial art film, and what a film. Love every second of it, really good for start to finished. However I would have liked to have seen more of it, the movie finished quite quicky, and not much was explained when Jet Li character was in the village. There should have been more added to it. Also the story really doesn't explain about Jet Li and the father. This should have been expanded on.
As for the martials art, pure class. Love every second of it, and up there with the old Once Upon a time in china series.
The ending was great but very very sad. The only thing is that with my version and the fan sub which I had downloaded sep, it didn't translate the beginning bit which was a shame. However I will def purchased this if it was released uncut..

A very good ending for Jet Li period martial film....

@Slasher:

At the end of the Qing Dynasty, the great lands of China
were divided and being dominated by foreign powers

Because of their inability to retaliate, the Chinese
were humiliated and subsequently
branded as "Sick Man of Asia"

At that time, it seems that no one was capable of
standing up against this humiliation

To further trample the pride of the Chinese
The Shanghai Foreign Traders Associate
organised a match using four experts from
different countries to challenge the Chinese people

This time, one man stood up against the challenge

And, he was Huo Yuan Jia

Sort of. I read that the original was much better than the remake. Also, the type of scenario in the film would be more feasible in a Japanese setting as Japanese folk are meant to be relatively straight laced (and maybe socially repressed) so if a Japanese middle aged bloke were to try ballroom dancing, he'd feel awkward and want to keep it quiet. I think thats just a stereotypical view anyway.

I saw the Richard Gere/J-Lo remake on a flight, and really enjoyed it. When I read that the original was supposed to be miles better, I decided to check it out. But I really prefer the remake, as I just didn't click with the actors in the original. The US version has a decent cast IMO, and all are good in it (even J-Lo).

A Scene at the Sea - 4/5
This was so good and showed me why I love Asian cinema. Kitano doesn't tell you straight away what he wants to express with his films. It's great when you have to draw your own conclusions and have to constantly try to get into the characters' minds. That's why I'm watching his films on my own always.
