Films you didn't like at first...

Post by BiscLimpkit »

...but love now?

For me, these films would be:

Akira
I must've seen this when I was like 13 or something. I remember there was a real anime craze at the time. All the games magazines were promoting the Manga label and were giving Akira good praise. It was shown uncut on BBC 2 with original Japanese audio. To be honest, my pre-pubescent mind was just not ready for it. It was so complicated, philosophical and intelligent that I couldn't understand any of it.

However I watched it again recently and I was overwhelmed at the quality of storytelling and animation. It looks fluid today as it did back then. A true marvel and it was worth paying £17 or so for the R1. Now I just need to get my hands on a DTS copy....

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
I hadn't really broken into Asian cinema and tbh, my taste in films only started to diserify during my university years. To me, CTHD was something too un-Hollywood and I couldn't get all the flying and stuff.

Obviously now I pick up on the wonderful story, cinematography and sublime use of music. Even the martial arts seems more fresh just now than when I initially watched it.

Fight Club
I didn't hate the film but when I first watched it, I thought that without the twist, the movie would've sucked. Conversely, this is perhaps one of the most re-watched films in my collection. I love revisiting this and picking up on subtle clues and messages that Fincher leaves behind. I now appreciate the humour and anti-commercialism theme more than the final twist. Filmmaking at its finest.

Ok I've put this under general film discussion, as it can obviously include any film (not just Asian). It just so happens that the films I chose were Asian.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - pretty much the same experience as Bisc.

Can't really think of any others.

I wouldn't say I love them but:

Collateral

I saw it with a friend and we both thought it was rubbish. On a second viewing I much prefer it now.

Terminator 3

I made the mistake of comparing it to what came before. I watched it again and didn't and I found myself enjoying it much more. Dumb popcorn fun.

Days of Being Wild; Thought it was OK at first but wasnt blown away or anything. I kept watching it over and over again because of Leslie's amazing performance, and it grew into my favourite movie of all time...

Ashes of Time, and most other WKW movies are the same; They get better everytime you watch them.

Planet of the Apes (The original), watched it when I was a little kid, thought it was sooo boring, but when I watched it when the r2 boxset came out, I really loved it. Such a good film.

Scarface (1981), for a long time, i really didn't like this movie. Just thought it was rubbish, because I like Al Pacino in Godfather, and was thinking about that all the time. So watching it last year, trying to block Godfather, it was a good movie in its own right.

Yeah in fact that applies to all three westerns in the Dollars trilogy. I wasn't a fan when I was a kid but love them all now.

Time and Tide

I hated it at first.

Oh yeah I second Time and Tide. Good looking drivel that I won't be going back to.

Some films you know you've not given a fair chance to, others you do.

My brother who watched it a few years back (he must've been 15-16) thought the same.

He watched all of them and preferred the 2001 version.

I couldn't stand "Once Upon a Time in the West" as it was so slow. I rewatched it when I bought it on DVD and loved it.
I bought it, because I kinda felt that it was a classic and I was so sure that I'd like it when watching it again.

I never liked Crime Story upon first viewing. I think I was like 12 at the time, that kinda film wasn't my cup of tea back then. Another thing is, I was so used to seeing Chan playing comedy roles. The serious role he played here I just didn't like.

But now, I absolutely treasure this film, it's up there with Drunken Master II and my other Chan favourites.

Same here Keung and LD! I didnt like "Crime Story" or "Heart of Dragon" when I was young as I was so used to Jackie's goofy action-comedy roles. Now I think theyre probably 2 of his best films.

Hey, me too. :D
I first saw Crime Story when I was fifteen. They were showing it on TV at the time.
They were doing a "Jackie Chan Special" with Drunken Master 2, City Hunter and Crime Story.
Needless to say I hated Crime Story.
Gave it another try in 2004 and it went from horrible to outstanding.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Is it better than say... Around the World in 80 Days? (Which is tough to beat imo).

The only thing I do not like about "Crime Story" is the scene in which Jackie fights the suspect at the police station. The scene where he does that sommersault forward and drinks something after that... I mean that was out of place, wasn't it? Jackie's character was supposed to be a normal cop in this film, but he clearly wanted to show off his skills again (probably against Kirk Wong's will).
