R4 The Planet of the Apes Ultimate Edition 12-disc set stored in a chimp head. Containing all 6 films (including Burton's remake) and the live action TV series. It's missing the piss-poor animated series though.
I've only seen the original and Burton remake, were the sequels to the original any good?
Thanks for the link. That R1 Legacy set looks nice, might get that sometime + the Burton remake 2-discer (which I liked).
Hopefully Fox have constructed those 5.1 remixes using the original elements only, but oh well if they haven't. I wouldn't sacrifice the remastered transfers just to have the original audio tracks.
What with all of these novelty heads (Alien, Sonny from I, robot and now planet of the apes) I just wonder will if people are going to have room if their DVD collections are full of such massive objects. Personally I'm struggling for space with regular DVD cases and some of the re release ultra thin cases so I wouldn't even consider buying any of these releases. Does anybody else struggle for space?

Totally man. It's a collector thing, and we all know collectors' are pretty ecentric. So they've probably got a whole book case dedicated to "oversized novelty packaging" like alot of hardcore anime nutters.
The UK R2 so more than likely the R4 is ONLY getting the head version. No single disc releases OR 6 Disc Legacy Box set of which R1 is getting both. It gets worse:
"Fox have informed us that all of the movie and live-action TV series discs included in the set are identical in terms of content, to the existing individual DVD releases. This makes the Return to the Planet of the Apes animated series the only new disc-based content of this release."
And:
"The discs are the same as those in the old box-set release though (which were at least anamorphic widescreen, when the old R1s weren't).
Just the 'Head' set for the UK so far as we know."
Meaning no remastered DVDs for UK R2!
WTF! R1 gets Remastered DVDs with newly created DD5.1 (+ DD1.0/2.0 to get everyone happy) but the UK R2's are going to be the same 5 year old DVDs.
Being American reviews they don't mean much to me as they compare against the old R1 releases which were always rubbish. I'm waiting for a comparison of the Legacy box set against the UK R2 box set, considering the mix of regions I suspect I'll be waiting a while.
I'm only really interested to find out if the PQ has really been remastered. Oh this is good news though:
This version of Battle comes in an extended edition that includes ten minutes of additional footage never before seen by the mainstream viewing public. The new footage fleshes out a bunch of sequences and adds two unearthed scenes, both of which have to do with a mutant chief deciding whether or not to drop an atomic missile on Ape City (from the research I’ve done, this extended version is near-identical to the Japanese Laserdisc version released in the early ‘90s).
Fox's new "Extended Edition" DVD adds several minutes of screentime and very modestly improves the film a bit. The most notable addition is a subplot involving mutant Alma (France Nuyen), entrusted by Kolp to detonate the dreaded Alpha-Omega doomsday bomb should the apes prevail.
Apparently the "Behind the PotA" disc in the R1 Legacy set is missing some of the extras from disc 2 of the POTA1 35th AE. Not that I care really, that meaty looking doco is all I'm really after.
From DVDtalk review of the R1 Legacy set:- Note the bolded sentence Brad.
dvdtalk wrote:All five films are presented in their original Panavision/Todd-AO 35 aspect ratios, with stellar 16:9 transfers that improve upon the older 16:9 DVDs released internationally. The later films don't appear all that different, but Planet of the Apes and, to a lesser extent, Beneath look exceptionally clean and sharp, free from dirt and age-related wear. Planet of the Apes offers myriad sound options: English Dolby Surround 5.1 and DTS, as well as French Dolby Surround and Spanish mono, along with English and Spanish subtitles. The sequels have English 5.1 Dolby Surround, the original English mono, and a French Mono track, as well as English and Spanish subtitles. Behind the Planet of the Apes (see below) is offered only in English Dolby Surround with English and Spanish subtitles. Each film comes with a terrific THX Optimizer that viewers can use not only to calibrate their sound systems, but also their television screens for maximum impact.
IMO it's well over the top. Good to see you went for the R1 though, the UK R2 is a joke.

Me to it's one of the best documentaries ever made.
Actually that UE isn't well Ultimate the R1 Image Entertainment 2 disc "Behind the PotA" DVD has 4 hours of so of material on disc 2 that will now be lost for good, as it's OOP.
