I'm gonna quote Kiran mk2 from

If I take the PAL system we use in this country as an example. PAL material is shown at 25fps and most TVs update 50 times a seconds.
So in the first refresh all the odd lines from the 1st of the 25 frames are shown
The second refresh shows all the even lines from the 1st of the 25 frames
The third refresh shows all the odd lines from the 2nd of the 25 frames
and so on.

This can result in a lack of definition around moving objects (especially scrolling text (eg end credits). progressive scan works by show every line on each refresh, so essentially each frame is shown for 2 refreshes.

You used to need both a prog scan player (expensive) and a prog scan TV (expensive and rare). Now however, most LCD tvs and projectors feature their own deinterlacers (ie will deinterlace a non-prog scan input) and prog scan players are becomming very common.

I sort of understand it... but not 100%... I only know it's a good thing lol.

I think basically the picture is more stable, thats basically it so it looks a little better.

The difference between your PC screen and TV is about the best comparison, your TV picture wont be half as good as your PC screen as its refreshed beter.

There are various methods of de-interlacing an interlaced TV signal eg. bob, weave, line-doubling, averaging but all involve a minor reduction in the quality of the image. The amount of reduction depends on the method employed as they all involve converting the two "half-frames" or fields into one single frame.

DVD player software on a PC will do it simply because computer monitors can't handle an interlaced signal. Another upshot is getting your standalone player to convert NTSC to PAL/60 (PAL @ 60Hz scan rate).

Not to condisend Cooey, I think people may go over his head (they do mine a lot on subjects like this) but sure in time he will become an expert on the subject :D

I think keep it simple and we can all understand easily. :P

Put simply unless your DVD player and TV can handle it it's pointless but if they both can then man I'm jealous :D

The simple answer Romero is it's far better quality than a standard TV etc . . . can handle. Cooey's new TV maybe able to support progressive scan.

The quote Bisc. gave makes sense to me. You really need 5.1 now :)

Which the vast majority do anyway.
