Thanks, I'll probably get the 2-disc edition. Not that the extras will do any good to me (as I can't speak french or japanese) but I love all these fancy special editions. They look good in my dvd collection...

Then... What the heck are you going to do with this DVD ? :tongue3:
If you can't read the subs or understand the language, then what ?

Add subtitles, burn a new dvd and enjoy the film. Just like I have done with all the other HK Video, Studio Canal, Toho etc. dvds 8)

I wish I was technical enough to do that :)

All you have to do is open dvd decrypter, click "ok" a couple of times, wait till it processes the data, open dvdlabpro, click "ok" a few more times, wait, and burn a new dvd. Honestly, I could do that with my eyes closed (and this comes from a person that doesn't even know how to use a computer).

Guide: http://www.videohelp.com/forum/archive/t219535.html
(looks more complicated than it is. That's because that guide goes through all the set ups step by step, and naturally you only have to do that stuff when you use the programs for the first time. Also, you can skip the last part, you lose the menus but save time and effort.

The only problematic part is the subtitles. Rip subs from another dvd you own or find subs from internet and make the timings yourself. Or go to asiandvdquide and see the list of subs I have timed and ask subs from me (but I will only give my subs to people who really own the dvd. Those who want to use them with internet rips: forget it, you ain't getting my subs).

OMG that's a good guide, HungFist. :)
I've always used Srt2Sup, Rejig, Ifoedit and all that crap.
But now it looks real easy.

It even works :D

I've never encountered a dvd that I could not sub (though I've only been doing this since last summer = about 20 dvds). I did have some problems with Cutie Honey R2J as dvdlabpro crashed every time with it. But I managed to solve that problem by using Vobedit instead of dvd decrypter to demux the video file.

Do you guys know if any major french companies put burnt in subs into their dvds? That would be a serious problem for me...

à la Optimum Home Entertainment ?
Nope. :D

The only thing that you might find is modified beginning and end titles (Bullet in the Head).

Sometimes, some of the writing might be replaced with burnt-in french text (Battle Royale comes to mind).

But don't you lose any video/audio quality? Or don't you have to abandon the DTS track or another track (commentary) or so to get it all burnt on a usual DVD-R? As far as I know there are only 4.7GB DVD-Rs you can buy while those used by DVD film labels have 9GBs.

You're late LD. Now there's DVD-R DL (for double-layer (8.5 gb)).
No quality loss. :D

10€ a piece in France. (It's a lot but it beats using 2 DVD-5 or reducing the quality of the rip).

Hmmm... not worth it considering the fact that you can get movie DVDs for under a tenner already. Besides, it is also not worth buying a French DVD at its full price and then to pay an extra 10 Euros for subtitles.

But in the case of "Fearless"... :D

It's worth it when your father sells blank DVDs for a living and you've got a key to his warehouse.
Did I say that out loud ? :D

German price:
10 for 26,99€
25 for 49,99€

But what bothers me more is that they are only for 2,4x speed.

I always use 4,7GB discs but that's no problem for me. I don't have dts capabilty, so I don't have to worry about that. I drop out everything that I don't need (commentaries, additional audio tracks, extras, menus...). I'm still gonna have all that on the original disc, so there's no point including stuff like commentaries.

On my 28" TV I can not see a difference in quality between a compressed and original dvd. But then again, I have bad eyes and small TV

Besides, I don't bother doing this when the difference between subbed and non-subbed dvd is small. But for example with All About Lily Chou Chou you could compress the japanese disc by 85% and the image quality would still be better than the US, UK or HK disc.

Update:

HK Vidéo will release Ching Siu-Tung's Terracotta Warrior in april.

Image

with Gong Li, Zhang Yimou and Yu Rong-Guong.
There won't be any extras, but the quality of the film more than makes up for it.

*Am I right in thinking that this will be the only available edition of this film in the world ?*

You're really late :D . They've been out for well over a year.
Tom2681 wrote:10€ a piece in France.
OMG 10€ each! I thought we paid a lot.
thelostdragon wrote:25 for 49,99€. But what bothers me more is that they are only for 2,4x speed.
Sure the speeds not great but 2€ that's 50% cheaper than we pay. Boarding on a reasonable price even.

You can only get them in spindles of 10 in the UK and it works out at £2.40/3.40€ each. I have a pack of 10 for every now and again but general use THEY'RE FAR TO FUCKING EXPENSIVE!

It really narks me off having to compromise using DVD-5's most of the time.

It and the fact DVD Blanks are very unreliable means I very rarely to never bother creating my own DVDs. CD-Rs while not 100% reliable are much more so than DVDs. I've had loads from decent enough makes that work fine then a few months later jump, skip, stutter in my DVD Player

I've only used 2 of my 10 DVD-9s and they're still okay but I didn't burn them all that long ago. For DVD-5s I ONLY buy the slightly more expensive TDK Scratch Proof DVDs it's not worth the risk (of course they're not actually 100% scratch proof). They partially charge more because you can only get them in silly keep cases, NOT spindle.

£2.40 + the cost of the case + the cost of printing a cover means it's not worth it. You can buy most films for £5-7 shortly after release or only a few months later anyway.

I find if you go lower than 70% you can definitely notice but 80% or more you can't. Most films fit with around 85-90% BUT without extras and menus which I want.
