bradavon wrote:That was silly :D . What made you think it should be watched in Cantonese?

Hero in Cantonese anyone? :D
Also, when the speaking character isn't facing the camera, they don't seem to care much about sync.
To true, to true.
Well as Tom said, it was shot partly in Cantonese, partly in Mandarin so who knows what the "original language" is supposed to be? :D Its not like Hero where it was shot 100% in Mandarin :D

Mandarin it's been said before. It maybe shot in both languages but Mandarin is the proper one :D

Oh this doesn't bode well:

"The main spoken language in this work is Cantonese."

http://www.bbfc.co.uk/website/Classifie ... enDocument

If it only contains the Cantonese soundtrack I'm getting the HK DVD for sure.

Maybe we should just acknowledge the truth:
Just like So Close, Chinese Odyssey 2002 and Fly me to Polaris (to name a few) Seven Swords doesn't have an original language.

So Close:
-Shu Qi and Zhao Wei speak mandarin.
-Karen Mok speaks cantonese.

Chinese Odyssey 2002:
-Chang Chen and Zhao Wei speak mandarin.
-Faye Wong and Tony Leung speak cantonese.

Fly me to Polaris:
-Richie Ren speaks mandarin.
-Cecilia Cheung speaks cantonese.

What language to view these movies in depends on your personal preference.

BTW: I'm not anti-mandarin. As a matter of fact I watch Mulan in mandarin (which is the right way to watch it IMO).
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Yeah - but for "Big Boss" or "Fist of Fury" Bruce spoke Cantonese, the rest of the cast spoke Mandarin. So the original language = Mandarin :)

BTW I did find it a bit odd hearing "Fist" in Mandarin as I'd heard it in Catonese all these years :D

Personally I disagree (IMO). I see what you're saying but in the case of Seven Swords and So Close there is a better soundtrack to choose.

In the case of So Close it's Cantonese but I tend to watch it in Mandarin as Shu Qi's accent is so cute.

You'd think the director of these films has a preference?

Well exactly and we all know how much you and Mark have gone on about that one :D

bradavon wrote:Is Seven Swords HK 2 Disc Standard Edition digi-pack or keep case?
It's a keepcase in a cardboard slipcover. I've got it and it's fine - I can't be arsed upgrading, unless the HKL has the 4-hour DC, which I highly doubt.

Thank you. I wouldn't bother either but for me I don't own it so I'm waiting.

I doubt I'll upgrade New Police Story HK DVD when HKL get around to releasing it.

Seven Swords: HK 3 DVD Complete Edition
I must have missed an episode.
Complete edition ?

Are you talking about the Deluxe ?

http://www.dvdasian.com/cgi-bin/dvdasian/20889.html

Or the Collector ?

http://www.dvdasian.com/cgi-bin/dvdasian/20519.html

Or something else ?

Actually I think the 7 Swords TV series came after the film - Bey talks it about on the Knockabout commentary.
Didnt realised it lasted over 400 episodes though.

 I'm only going by what that Teletext review said.
Mind you, most Teletext reviews are poorly researched crap - they mentioned the fact the film ran for 2.5 hours but "the TV series lasted 400 episodes", and also ignored the fact the film is based on just ONE of a series of SEVEN books.

:)

You've not heard of Teletext?

It's an 1980's (I think) precursor to the Internet that is only running still because Grim asked them to keep it up :D . It's TV based and is very pants tbh.

Grim why do you still use it?

It's called the Complete Edition on DDDHouse and looks identical to that 3 Disc LE release back in January but minus the LE stuff of course.

I'm talking about the version I discussed a few days ago here:

https://www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/forums/ ... start=1160

It looks the same as the Deluxe version you list above but that version doesn't mention the Director Commentary, actually that looks like another version again.

I suspect they are the same version and DVD Asian have got the listing wrong. The LE spec. at DVD Asian matches up with the Complete Edition spec. at DDDHouse:

1. DTS
2. Split across 2 discs
3. Director's Commentary
4. 129 minutes of English subtitled extras on disc 3

Put it this way the version at DDDHouse and soon to be CD WOW looks to be the definitive version (unless you like LE stuff of course).

It looks lovely and will wipe the floor with the older HK 2 DVD and HKL.

Hey I'm still using Teletext too. :D

I think I'm gonna wait a while to see if they want to release the 4-hour cut, don't want to spend too much on one film.

@Grim:
AFAIK the Seven Swords TV Show lasted for 36 40-minute episodes.
It was scripted by Tsui Hark, directed by Clarence Ford, and choregraphed by Yuen Bun. It had lots of famous actors like Chiu Man-Cheuk, Ada Choi, Leung Kar-Yan and Liu Ye.

Sometimes I read some of the letters/views on there, I dont really use it for info ;)
Teletext is 1990's actually, it debuted in 1993 after Oracle closed :P
Cant decide if I'll upgrade Brad, I havent seen any extras on my HK DVD yet.

@ Tom.

Thanks, I don't know where Teletext got its 400 episodes figure from ;)
And anyway they said "original TV series" - the film was before the TV series (AFAIK) :D
Teletext are busted! :D

The Complete Edition is up at Yes Asia too:

http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.as ... 1004180144

Which also lists the same spec. as DDDHouse. I'd say the DVD Asian listing is definitely wrong.

Confusing name I know but it's listed as that on Yes Asia also. With the older DVD being the SE I guess or we could just call them the Standard Edition and Special Editions.

The cover art says "Complete Edition" -

Complete Edition would customers presume though that it is the director's cut.

Complete as in Complete "For Now" :D

I'm still getting it, there's no proof at all I've seen we'll ever see a longer cut. These new DVDs even have deleted footage.

Yeah, all of crappy quality, as they most probably were not post-worked in terms of colour-correction etc.

More info on Seven Swords HKL

Mandarin 5.1 Soundtrack
Mandarin DTS Soundtrack

If it wasn't cut I'd possibly opt for it over the HK 3 Discer as I don't really like when films are split over 2 discs (unless they're mega long).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD WOW have finally put the HK Seven Swords: Complete Edition up, for £8.99 after vouchers (£2 more than the Standard 2 Disc Edition):

http://www.cd-wow.com/detail_results_2. ... ode=275249

They've got a release date of the 13th of April despite it being released on the 30th of March and in stock according to DDDHouse and Yes Asia.

Still I don't care much it's cheaper at CD WOW so I'll go there.

But this longer version is still cut, isnt it? I remember reading at the time it came out, that it was originally going to be 4 hours long or something, and that they cut alot of stuff out (so it was already filmed)

Just a sidenote... I like the cover art of the HKL disc. So... unexpectedly nice, isn't it?
