The Alien movies.
...Ok... got these 4 movies a while back as a parting goft from the guys at my internship. Over the last couple of months I've seen pt 1 and 2, so I was planning on giving pt. 3 a try soon, but I just found out there are 2 versions. One is the 110 minute version, which I have on DVD (single disc edition) but there's also a 145 min (2003 Special 'Assembly Cut' Edition) version.
Now, should I just bin the version I have, and buy the 145 minute version? Is it better? Or are both versions worth watching?
Cause if the 145 minute version is much better, I'd rather not waste my time on the 110 minute version...

The 110m version was the theatrical release taken away from the director after a very troubled shoot. I think the 145m version is some sort of attempt to get the film to Fincher's original vision - if not a full blown dir's cut. I don't know I haven't seen that edit myself. There's bound to be lots of discussion and comparison on this from fans if you do a search.

Definately watch the 2003 (145m) extended cut. The film is FAR more coherent.
It's actually a workprint. It would be impossible to create DC, Fincher said that he'd have to remake the entire film in order to do it.Markgway wrote:I think the 145m version is some sort of attempt to get the film to Fincher's original vision - if not a full blown dir's cut.

Thanks Mark
I had already checked that cause I hoped that would give me some info as to what versions were available, and which one I had etc...
Eva: thanks... seems like I'm better off getting the longer version...
This is exactly the reason why I think movies shouldnt be cut. Now I need to spend extra cash on a movie I already have.

I haven't seen the extended version of Alien 3 yet although I have heard it's much better. Although I have recently watched alien the directors cut and have to say I prefer the original theatrical version.
I don't know if it's still available or even if www.sendit.com ships to Europe but I read on another website they had Alien 3 special edition (2 DVD) for £3.99.

I prefer the original '79 TC too and so does Ridley Scott.
EvaUnit02 wrote:NO, the '79 threatrical cut is Scott's prefered version of Alien. Fox just labelled the 2003 alternative cut as "DC" as marketing move. Watch Scott's introduction on the 2-disc SE (from the Quadrilogy) if you're still not convinced.

I didn't realise that it was just a marketing idea. From his introduction I assumed it was a bona fide directors' cuts that he wanted to do.EvaUnit02 wrote:I prefer the original '79 TC too and so does Ridley Scott.EvaUnit02 wrote:NO, the '79 threatrical cut is Scott's prefered version of Alien. About Alien 3:
I've recently seen the DC and I gotta say that it's a much better film than the TC.
It removes the scenes with the dog and adds lots of character development.
By the end of the DC, you actually care about the characters (you just barely know them in the TC).
My only gripe with the DC is sound-related. Apparently the actors only ADR'd the TC, not the DC. Which means that whenever you get into an added scene, the voices become muffled and there's a lot of background noise.

I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Cyncial marketing by Hollywood? Surely not?
The Frighteners Director's Cut, er isn't, as Jackson himself states the theatrical cut is HIS driector's cut, and that the "director's cut" is merely "his fun cut".
But I guess for Universal to put out THE FRIGHTENERS - THE FUN CUT would be asking too much??

I really thought I was quite cynical by nature but I always thought a directors cut was made by the director because they were not completely happy with the theatrical release.Markgway wrote:Cyncial marketing by Hollywood? Surely not?
