Scream 7 ** Weakest of the series with a particularly lame reveal/conclusion. Enough now, surely?

Deathstalker (Canada / USA, 2025) [DCP] - 3/5
The 1980s Deathstalker films were pretty dull and amateurish, if T&A heavy, low budget descendants Conan the Barbarian. This new film is Deathstalker for Gen Z, that is, it’s got no T&A whatsoever. What it does have is 100 minutes of 80s monster and gore prosthetics brought to screen by SFX nerd / director Steven Kostanski. I saw his co-directorial effort Father’s Day (2011) more than a decade ago and liked it, though I criticised its overt and apologetic goofiness. Deathstalker finds a better balance: it’s utterly ridiculous, but at least somewhat refrains from the most cringeworthy eye winking. It’s a bit too long and not as catchy as you’d wish, but it's still a fairly good time at the movies.
