Need help; Bittorrent fucked up after SP2...

...since I installed SP2 for Win XP, my once superfast Bittorrent days seem to be over; it's as slow as as Toge's mom on the toilet.

I'm NOT behind a firewall, and I HAVE forwarded the ports to my router. I have a fast cable connection, and I HAVE installed the 4224 patch or whatever it was called... and changed the max thingy...

Anyone had a simular problem, and know a solution!?

Hey SP2 is Bugged to Hell and my advice is NEVER install it ever, I have heard unbelvable stories of what this evil thing can do and at the moment its never going to be installed on my PC! bassically its so incompatable with soo many programmes and pieces of hardware no one yet knows what its fully working with, as people discover new bugs all the time, and maybe in 5 years time when all the bugs are found with all things, I may install it, but in the mean time I dont want all my PC parts messed up and my HardDrive wiped clean, so its never going to be installed.

Basically I think you may be out of luck and may need to just go back in time and get rid of SP2 with the jump to a safe point, untill you know exactly what parts of your PC it has messed up and you know what the hel to do about it

To try and at least be a little help there have been numerous claims made by people that when you switch off the firewall in sp2 through the icon in the system tray it doesnt actually switch it off even though it claims it has. Whilst many proffessional techies refuse to believe this is a real problem, there is nonetheless a solution being bandied around, I've hunted around, the following is a linkto a somewhat straight forward version of it...

thanks Morbid, but turning of that firewall, or it showing in XP, wasnt a problem. It's just the speed of downloading.

Really sucks that it's so slow right now... and I didnt download any 'unpopular' files; there were LOTS of people online sharing it at the same time (Naruto 105).

Goddamn SP2; really ruiining my whole illegal downloading skeem. bastards.

Ah... downloaded bitcomet last night and it seems to have improved the speed a bit. currently downloading at slightly over 40 kb/sec... which still isnt very fast, but it will do...

What kind of bandwidth do you have ?

I can only upload at 16 kb/s, which means I can only download at 16 too.

Tom, try altering your upload settings. I usually use speed; Cable SLOW, max upload; 8, Max user 3 (You have to fill in this 8 & 3 manually, as the sliders only go as far back as 4 and 10 on those cable settings.
That should speed things up for ya... unless your behind a firewall or router.

Its astounding that you get speeds of 68kps on a 56k modem. Theoreticly your max download speed should be 7kbps. A speed of 68k is what you get on a 550kps modem!

Anyhow what was your old bittorrent client?? Have you tried bittornado 3.8? The latest update is supposed to work better on SP2. I cant verfiy this as I dont want SP2.

I am not on 56k I am on Broadband I used to get max of 5 on my old 56k Modem

Firstly I'm going to sit on the controversial fence and say SP2 is far from crap:

* It's full of security updates and bug fixes
* It has a popup blocker (at last)
* It has an ActiveX blocker/Add-in manager
* Enhanced security centre (including a much need boost for the firewall)
* An efficient firewall that blocks what is should and is clever enough to not block what it shouldn't. I've tried Norton Personal and it bugged the hell out of me asking if I'd like to block this and that port, why wouldn't I?
* Automatic Windows updates

It's long overdue IMO. Sure some of this you get with SP1 but it's just more efficient and polished off with SP2. I've installed it on 3 system and have had zero problems.

I've read some of those horror stories to but that doesn't mean you should not bother, if you think you don't need the above you're a fool. Remember there has been some/many who have had problems but as many/more who are running it fine, we just don't here about them.

Sure I found it blocked some applications from working but a popup window appears asking if I'd like to open the port, I say yes and jobs a gooden. Having no firewall is a huge security risk (as in the case of XP before SP2).

Sure many people run another one but most people don't and IMO the XP one is the best anyway!

As for Longhorn that's not coming until 2007 a long time to wait for those security fixes!

As for Yi-Long's problem what BitTorrent software you running? Have you tried another one? Maybe yours isn't SP2 compatible.

I run BitComet on SP2 and it's fine, sure the download speeds aren't great but I find BitTorrent, eDonkey, Kazaa all slow most of the time. My average download speed is 8-10Kbps.

Which is why I barely bother downloading a movie. I only do if it's something I'm not sure about and therefore don't want to fork out for the DVD.

I think yes its a great thing, BUT ONLY IF IT DOESNT MESS UP YOUR PC! which not one person can guarentee at all, it can do anything and many people have been left with unfixable PC's if you were one of them people you would not be saying anything good about SP2 I still havent installed it and wont until I get another Hard drive and back everything up, as its not worth the chance at all of loosing everything on your pc etc... :what:

Probably but tbh not wanting to sound big headed I've yet to have a pc in such a state I can't repair it.

And believe me my I've had pc's in mega states. At one point my hard disk was so badly damaged it wouldn't load DOS let alone Windows (back in the 9x days).

So even if it had messed up my pc I suspect I'd be able to fix it and still be running SP2.

Hey the problems I have read and have been told of are appauling some minor and some you couldnt fix even you I am sure, as if its buggers certain hardware you cannot fix that.

Well I just installed SP2 2 days ago. Straight off my Zone Alarm 4.5 (the only really stable version) fooked up. Apparently according to microsoft its one of the programs that dont work.

So after a few hours o mutiple crashes andf uninstalling and upgrading my firewall and antivirus my system seems to be working fine. But I get the feeling Zonealarm 5.5062 is a tad unstable.

Could someone recommend me a software that would optimize my system memory etc

For BT im using Bittornado which is supoosed to work with SP2

I'm 95% sure a service pack would not damage hardware, it's still not possible. Any links to show this?

You can't blame Microsoft for the makers of ZoneAlarm not making it compatible.

At the end of the day XP is now more secure with SP2 that's a fact and anytime restrictions come in place it's inevitable some programs etc... will have problems.

If service pack 2 shuts down certain parts as its incompatable then bits wont run and they over heat or other things happen and boom they break, I have no idea where I read it I dont think its very hard to find sites full of severe problems.

Well my system has slowed down a bit since installing SP2. This baby likes RAM

My laptop fan seems to be running more often. Not sure why??

Also Bittornado freezes after after a while. Not had this before. Trying a fix tonight see if it works.

I've not had any performance hit running SP2, speed wise it's not changed.

Have you tried re-installing (uninstalling first) BT?

LOL Microsoft aren't stupid they're not going to write a service pack that disables important hardware such as heat sinks.

OK obviosuly you know more, but they are pros the people I have read having big problems an they know what they were talking about, you need to check on the net if you think its wrong. Just because you think it wont happen and cannot happen, doesnt mean it doesnt. :duh:
