What are your Top Twenty Action Movies?

Post by Markgway »

Mission:

To pick your twenty best and most favourite action movies in your collection. The films you think are beyond cool. Never mind critics or box office. This is your chance to state your case. I've made it twenty because its easier to narrow a shortlist down to than ten and paves the way for more interesting choices that might otherwise be excluded from a more predictible limited number. You might not want to put a Chuck Norris vehicle in your top ten... but top twenty? Maybe? 8)

Simple rules:

1. No Asian films. I'm going to doing a seperate thread for those.
2. No more than two films from any one director. To keep things interesting. Actors can appear in all twenty if so wished.
3. Only one entry from an official series can be chosen. If you select Part III you can't have II or IV alongside it.
4. The definition of "action" is loose so that a western with gunplay could count as a choice. It doesn't HAVE to be a blow-shit-up blockbuster.
5. You can list films either alphabetically or in order of preference if you can manage it.
6. No spitting, no masturbating, no earclaps.

That's all folks!!

In alphabetical order:

1. CLIFFHANGER (1993, Renny Harlin)
*Stallone's "comeback" vehicle after rudely dismissed forays into comedy proved that old Rambo still had it -- with mucho violence and mayhem from Rocky in the Rockies. Nasty villains, brutal fights, great locations.

2. DIE HARD (1988, John McTiernan)
*Possibly the finest American action movie ever made. Deservedly made Bruce Willis a star and created an entire sub-genre of "Die-Hard-on-a..." blockbusters. But this is how it should be done.

3. THE FUGITIVE (1993, Andrew Davis)
*One of only two films on this list to be nominated for Best Picture. A classy, taut thriller with Harrison Ford at his best.

4. GLADIATOR (1992, Rowdy Herrington)
*No, not that overblown Ridley Scott tripe, but rather the little seen underground boxing drama. It's a familiar underdog story, but like the great white hope, it packs a knockout punch.

5. GOLDENEYE (1996, Martin Campbell)
*It was tough picking just one 007 adventure, but I settled for the one that demonstrated just how good a James Bond movie could be in the modern age. Sean maybe definative, but Pierce excels in his debut. Worth mentioning the best hand-to-hand combat in the entire legacy.

6. HARD TARGET (1993, John Woo)
*Forget the hammy campfest Face/Off and revel in this pure blood action movie. Unpretentious and exciting from the word go. The best American gunplay sequences ever commited to celluloid. See it uncut.

7. HUDSON HAWK (1991, Michael Lehmann)
*Reviled as a turkey upon initial release but later regarded as a cult classic by its devoted fans. No one understood the humour behind this film and expected "Die-Hard-in-the-Vatican" -- or something? Very funny and clever.

8. IN THE LINE OF FIRE (1993, Wolfgang Petersen)
*Exceptionally well-crafted and gripping thriller. Clint's best performance for which he should have been nominated. By the way this is the OTHER Oscar nominee.

9. JUDGMENT NIGHT (1993, Stephen Hopkins)
*Went DTV in the UK, but this urban nightmare clicked with me first time I saw it. Builds tension and character throughout. One of those films that gets ignored, but is well worth checking out.

10. THE LAST BOY SCOUT (1991, Tony Scott)
*Slick, ultra-violent detective yarn from Shane Black. Bruce Wills wisecracks, people explode over helicoptor blades. What else do I need to say?

11. LETHAL WEAPON 2 (1989, Richard Donner)
*For me the best of the series as it perfectly balances action, comedy and drama elements.

12. THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT (1996, Renny Harlin)
*More Renny, more Shane, and more of the good shit we've come to expect. Loads of explosions, but it's the characters that make you care. Sam Jackson is on dynamite form.

13. MIDNIGHT RUN (1988, Martin Breast)
*The director maybe named after a tit, but he does himself proud with this delightful action comedy. The ONLY movie in which Robert DeNiro has been funny. Take note. Plenty swearing, but doesn't deserve it's '18'.

14. OUT FOR JUSTICE (1991, John Flynn)
*Seagal's best to date - and judging by his recent output likely to remain so. Good acting from the man in black and subtitles in a Seagal mob flick? Surely not? But it's true. Give it a chance - if only because it's the only film I've seen in which the baddie dies from a corkscrew through the head.

15. PREDATOR (1987, John McTiernan)
*Total Recall gives this a run for its money -- but there's something seminal about this men-on-a-mission jungle adventure that somehow defines genre expectation. Arnie is on top cigar-munching form and there's some nice gore bits for the ketchups.

16. THE PRINCIPAL (1987, Christopher Cain)
*A film which many of you will not have seen. It stars James Belushi (no, stay with me...) as a high school teacher (I'm serious!) Joking aside- I thoroughly enjoyed this High Noon-in-a-school tale of one man (well, two I guess) taking on the most violent punks in the city's worst school. Not a lot of "action" per se. But it's violent and tense and deserves a better reputation.

17. ROAD HOUSE (1989, Rowdy Herrington)
*The cheesiest, corniest popcorn flick on the list. But how can you not love a movie in which Dirty Dancer Patrick Swizzle tears out a homosexual's throat?

18. STRANGE DAYS (1995, Kathryn Bigelow)
*From a James Cameron script... ironically I actually prefer this to his own movies. Millenium nightmare concept might already seem dated, but it's satire and politics remain potent, as does it's darkness and nihilism. Ralph Fiennes and Angela Bassett are excellent.

19. TOY SOLDIERS (1991, Daniel Petrie)
*Great fun teens-in-peril actioner eschews the expected PG-13 market and goes for R-rated profanity and bloodshed instead. There's plenty humour, a well-chosen cast, a novel setting, some surprises and a tight plot.

20. TRUE ROMANCE (1993, Tony Scott)
*The best film Tarantino almost made. Tony Scott cut the pretention and waffle and distilled the best of what Quent's writing has to offer. The cast is a knockout and so's the extreme censor-baiting violence.

That's my list.... think you can do better?

In no particular order:

01 - The Boondock Saints
One of the best independent films ever. Poor director Troy Duffy has been ripped off by Miramax.

02 - Bad Boys
Apart from the cool dialogues, the comedy and the action in this film, the chase sequence in this film makes it a must-have in my opinion.

03 - Bloodsport
Probably Van Damme's best film. A classic.

04 - First Blood (Can't believe I didn't see John J. Rambo on your list, soldier!)
Wonderful film. I even liked the sequels, but part one focusses more on the Rambo-character which is great.

05 - The Rock
Awesome action, awesome soundtrack by Hans Zimmer.

06 - Demolition Man
Very funny dialogues plus great action.

07 - Spider-Man
Part 2 has even more action in it, but I'm talking about the "Spider-Man"-movies in general. Love to see him swing.

08 - Rocky (not really an actionfilm, but it does feature great fights)
Well, who says Stallone can't act.

09 - The Corruptor
Probably Chow Yun-fat's best Hollywood-flick (incl. "Anna and the King"). The car chase and the shoot-outs in this are uber-cool.

10 - Drive (Mark Dacascos)
Probably the best American martial arts film.

11 - Crying Freeman (Mark Dacascos)
Great manga/anime adaptation. Great storyline, wonderful character. Dacascos' best role so far in my opinion. The action here includes shoot-outs, chases and martial arts fights, which are top-notch.

12 - Mission: Impossible 2
As "Mission: Impossible" I enjoyed the first part more, in terms of an agent film. However, you were asking for action and the second part has it. I am so sure that if it wasn't called "Mission: Impossible 2", but something like "Chimera" or so, people wouldn't criticise it so much.

13 - Kill Bill Vol. 1
Tarantino's take on a martial arts film and it's damn fine for an American film, because the story is really fascinating.

14 - Predator 2 (action-wise better than the first in my opinion)
Well, what can I say. Don Cheadle chasing the predator through a concrete jungle. What more do you need here?

15 - Heat
The shoot-outs here were just very well captured.

16 - Ronin
The chases... oh my God these awesome car chases in this.

17 - Collateral
Again, the car scenes and the night club shoot-out.

18 - Blade
Wesley Snipes' last big film in my opinion. Maybe part 2 as well. But in part 3 you could see he was getting old.

19 - Léon
Jean Réno is one of my favourite actors and his portrayal of Léon is second-to-none. He IS Léon.

20 - Falling Down
This film indeed has action sequences. Remember the shoot-outs with Douglas against those Mexicans. He doesn't even cause their accident. Then, simply walks over and kills them. The dialogue's are just funny as hell, "Doesn't seem to be your day today. And now you die... on your golf course... with a rudiculous little hat on your head." LOOOOOOL!!!

Maybe "Star Wars V" as well? Or "Pirates of the Caribbean"? Damn, list is too short.

It's funny, I have two movies from Michael Bay, two from Michael Mann, two with Mark Dacascos, but three with Sylvetser Stallone. :D

thelostdragon wrote:Can't believe I didn't see John J. Rambo on your list, soldier!
lol, I do have FIRST BLOOD on DVD - but not the sequels.
The Rock
I also have this, but forgot about it. lol Not sure if it would make my top twenty, but definately twenty-five. Same for DEMOLITION MAN, probably.
12 - Mission: Impossible 2
Nice to see I'm not the only one who enjoyed this. :D
14 - Predator 2 (action-wise better than the first in my opinion)
I tend to agree - and its a top sequel - but there's something approaching greatness about the original that gives it the edge.
17 - Collateral
Last film I bought. 8)
19 - Léon
Damn, you keep picking stuff I forgot about. I do have this too. Again, top 25 methinks.
20 - Falling Down
Ooh, I love Falling Down, but I can't remember a single action sequence in it. So I knocked it off my short list. Hmm... so you would include it, LD? Well, it WOULD make my top twenty in that case.

Give us your list, Romero.

And LD, can you give some one-liners as to why you have chosen those films?

How about Danny Glover? :D
20 - Falling Down

I personally don't think that qualifies as an "action" sequence. But I love the film so I'll turn a blind eye to its inclusion... If I was doing a top twenty from ANY GENRE then Falling Down would in there. It rocks.

I wish I could give you all a list but I would forget wayy to many and its just very hard to single out a list of 20 :(

I may try to think about it, but for me doing things like this is soo hard.

I would say Falling Down isnt up with the best, it just wasnt what I expected when I forst saw it and it just didnt work as it went further into the film, still good, but just not what I wanted to see by the end.

Personally I haven't seen any of those...... but from what I know LOTR has battle sequences, Taxi, car chases, presumably? No idea about Dune, but like LD with Falling Down, if you think it has at least one key action sequence go for it.

I don't really like non-asian action films, so this list isn't really about my favourites. It's about the few action films that I find barely tolerable. :D

In no particular order:

1:
Judge Dredd.
The only Stallone film I can appreciate. Much better than any of that Rambo/Rocky/Driven crap.

2:
Pirates of the Carribean.
I know it's more adventure than action, but it's one of my favourites.

3:
Brotherhood of the Wolf.
Mark Dacascos, French beast and Kung-Fu. We don't need anything else.

4:
Jurassic Park.
The first Spielberg movie I ever saw.

5:
Godzilla.
Fun summer movie. And it's got Matthew Broderick and Jean Reno ! :D

6:
Fifth Element.
The last good Besson movie.

7:
Broken Arrow.
The only good US John Woo movie IMO.

8:
Aliens.
One of the most dynamic action films I've ever seen.

9:
Wing Commander.
When you don't think of it as an adaptation of the games, it's actually a fun little movie.

10:
Wasabi.
Jean Reno in Japan, beating the crap out of lots of yakuzas.

11:
Vertical Limit.
It would've been a great movie if the casting people had done a better job.

12:
The Good, the bad and the ugly.
My favourite western.

13:
Tomorrow never dies.
The only watchable 007 movie (thanks to Michelle Yeoh).

14:
Starship Troopers.
Verhoeven at his best.

15:
Terminator 2.
"I'll be back".

16:
Soldier.
My favourite Kurt Russell film.

17:
Pulp Fiction.
Empty but fun. Kinda like popcorn.

18:
Murphy's war.
Philippe Noiret and Peter O'Toole at war with a german submarine on the Orinoco. Great stuff.

19:
I robot.
Good film, although I was expecting a lot more.

20:
Speed.
Fun and Mindless.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

I really don't like making lists of "top movies" in any genre because i always seem to forget really good ones. So, here is just a list of random non-asian action films i have enjoyed.

In no particular order.

1: Die Hard
One of the best of the genre.

2: Aliens
I was completely floored the first time i watched this movie.

3: Speed
Great fun :)

4: Equilibrium
GREAT movie made on a miniscule budget.

5: The Hunted
One of the most underrated action films ever, IMO.

6: Terminator II
Come on, how can you not love this one.

7: Predator
"Get to da choppa!!!!"

8: Total Recall
One of my favorite action films of the 80s. Classic stuff.

9: First Blood
I actually think this is a really good film, not mindless cheese like the sequels. (although very entertaining mindless cheese :D )

10: Hard Target
Worthless plot but some great John Woo action work.

11: Face Off
Don't care what anyone says, i think this flick is great.

12: Dog Soldiers
As everyone probably knows already, i'm a big fan of this film :D

13: No Escape
I've always liked this one. Ray Liotta kicks ass.

14: Cliffhanger
Super fun action flick with one of the best villains ever.

15: The Long Kiss Goodnight
Shane Black + Renny Harlin = Good shit :D

16: The Last Boyscout
My favorite Shane Black flick. Classic one liners!

17: Ronin
Some of the best car chases in film history.

18: Vertical Limit
Lots of fun. Very underrated.

19: Leon
Besson's best.

20: Heat
One of the most intense, realistic shoot-outs ever. Love the ending also!

I can't believe you put "Driven" and "Rocky" in one sentence.

Lots of films that has something to do with French people there. "Fifth Element" was really cool and I liked "Wassabi" as well. I'm a fan of Jean Reno. This guy is a great actor. Tom, have you seen "Ruby & Quentin"?

Recon.
"Total Recall" was released Summer 1990, so its not an 80's film :P

I love that film though, one of Arnie's best IMO. :D

its designed for people with short attention spans, the first half is sooooo boring that the second half seems good in comparison, most people only seem to rmemebr the feeling of joy and delight of the improvement of the second half ;)

anyway, my list in no particular order-

the one - Jet Li likes Nu Metal!!! I like this film so much as a popcorn action flick, i think the effects put some of the matrix effects to shame...

resident evil apocalypse - when she enters the church on the bike... the rest of the film could have been watching a stationary turd and it would still have made my top twenty. there is no reason or logic to the scene but its damn great none the less.

mortal kombat - needs no reasoning surely, one of the greatest films ever made!! Oh ok then it was a combination of the awful scooter music and dedication to their special moves no matter how stupid they looked that won me over.

payback - Mel Gibsons greatest film?? well its certainly one of the most underrated films of our generation as far as im concerned. very entertaining, very clever yet built upon a very simple premise and well executed.

dobermann - german flick about a gun toting criminal guy and his rather twisted criminal friends. seriously OTT on the violence, the bad guys are the heroes in this one no mistake.

the crow - the defining film of my youth... cant really say much more apart from along with DUNE this film defined my life...

starship troopers - Medic! another wonderfully OTT action flick, great effects, great humour, great dig at the americans concept of the ideal world.

enemy at the gates - i liked the accents, sod everyone else... real atmospheric, great performances from all involved, really involving

true romance - christian slater rocks

leon - one of the all time greats?? brings out the paedophile in all of us... (for those of you with no humour, thats what is known as a purposely bad joke) :O

once upon a time in mexico - johnny depp rocks

equilibrium- main bad guys a fat git. great stuff

dune - action movie?? epic?? david Lynch... Yay!!!!

fight club - great plot well held together. fun too. best performance by brad pitt since true romance

cypher - great movie, underated, clever, headache inducing in some places. Darren aranofsky shouldve made it.

ahhh, sorry grown bored writing this, will finish it later...
