This looks identical to the R1 Extreme Edition. Except that also has a director's commentary + it uses seamless branching to put disc 1 and 2 on the same disc.

That does lose lots of the extras to fit a WMV HD version on disc 2 though. You choose.

The R1 Extreme Edition is already remastered (disc 1).

I'm sticking with my R1 UE too I still reckon it's the best version. I have no problem with the PQ, don't want to own two versions and don't want to lose what the R1 UE gets me for better PQ + a Director's commentary found on the R1 EE.

I know the DVD is old but I think the picture is fine too, and the DD/DTS are both tops :)

*Yawn* I didn't bother with the Extreme Edition, aside from the commentary the extras are just gimmicky rubbish. WMV format HD transfer? Waste of time, plus it's got some funny region authentication process making it a pain to play outside of North American reportedly. Th EE has no DTS tracks; the extras on the UE rocked - sure the majority of it is laserdisc-era text-based stuff but it's grimming with information that covers every minute aspect of every step of production.

I originally had the R4 UE, but sold that when I bought the OOP R1 UE. The R4 did have superior picture quality, but it was missing the theatrical cut.

Agreed. The only reason to get the EE is the remastered PQ (+ commentary also of course). Like Grim I'm happy with the R1 UE AV.

By how much?

Do you prefer the TC then Eva? Personally it's the EE for me. One of the scenes from that extra EE is good but the alternate ending is AWFUL. I watch the EE when I watch T2 now.

The R1 UE is reportedly married to edge enhancement, the R4 (uses the Studio Canal transfer - the R2 Momentum UE probably uses it as well) has next to none edge enhancement and just benefits from the natural higher resolution of PAL. Personally the R1 UE transfer looks fine to me, but the R4 transfer did look slightly better (I used to watch that DVD ALOT).

Depends really. The TC has much better pacing than the extended cut, but the extended cut does have more character development thanks to the added scenes (eg Dyson with his family, Sarah's dream sequence featuring Reese). The Aliens TC vs. extended cut is argument in the same boat IMO.
