Seriously, what were Arrow thinking putting out this barrel-scraper?
Released a 1000 copies, sold the lot.they are a business.
Which proves people will buy any old shit if you put a nice enough label on it.

Arrow should (and mostly do) release better. Hellgate is more an 88 Films type product.

Arrow are releasing trash like Blood Rage,Mutilator & Madman. They've got more trash lined up next year.i won't be buying but good luck to people who appreciate these releases and good on Arrow for having the business acumen to realise stuff like this sells.not sure what your point is tbh. Did you buy their Hellgate release?

You have a point. It did seem like (for a while) Arrow were staying away from grade Z product but the upcoming titles you mention does prove otherwise. I'm not against them being released - every film has its fans - but I'd rather Arrow (who've built up quite a reputation for quality) spent their time and effort on worthier projects. Dreck like Madman and Mutilator belong with 88 Films. Of course I didn't buy Hellgate; though if I had I'm sure I could eBay it now for a healthy chunk of change. I think most people buy these limited editions with no intentions of keeping them. I guess my whinge is that there are so many classics out there begging for the Arrow treatment that it's frustrating when they announce a line-up of trash. I don't know what the upcoming American rarities are, but I suspect they'll turn out to be deservedly obscure.

Arrow have seen the likes of 88 films do well with mostly terrible splatter flicks (Don't go in the woods :o ) and realised they can pick similar up and with their name attached can charge a much bigger premium than 88 can. it's the Criterion effect, people are buying for the label not the movies in most cases.

Home Before Midnight 2/5 a change of pace from Pete Walker's usual offerings, a successful songwriter starts a sexual relationship with a young girl not knowing she is only 14.When he finds out he's shocked but can't give her up.Eventually her parents find out and his world falls apart...interesting but overlong and rather drab at times film but worth seeing.

Tales Of Halloween 1.5/5 i'd heard good things about this new horror anthology, however i was left disappointed.10 short stories set on Halloween night in an unidentified American suburb, there's only a couple of decent segments here. A nice touch to have Adrienne Barbeau reprise her role from The Fog.

Ten? Sounds like they went for quantity over quality. Most anthologies don't go past four. Never been a fan of horror anthologies myself.

The Purge (2013: James DeMonaco)

It has a relatively low IMDB rating and a relatively low rotten tomatoes percentage and some reviews that just trash it like Simon Abrams of rogerebert.com, but in some ways I liked it regardless of its plot issues (and there are plenty if you think about it, though if you read through the forums on IMDB they come up with many that I do not agree with.) My brother calls it a glorified The Twilight Zone episode (he likes it) as it uses an idea and keeps most of the action in a singular place -- the house of James Sandin (Ethan Hawke.) I do think a lot of the complaints on the film have more to do with what was expected of the film versus what the film actually was. They wanted much more violence and would have been happier if the story took place in an inner city.

The strength of the film is in the idea of a purge. In this dystopia a once-a-year happening that is used as a catharsis to weed out your yearly aggressions. Certain weapons can be used (I do wish they went into more details on this during the film) to most people (of course not the politicians) and the results of these yearly rituals are a lower crime-rate. The movie delves into this unfairness as a social-economic tool (obviously having more money means you are better protected, but it hatches some other ideas of thinking you are protected when you are actually not), but it only dips into this area in which I think it could easily have been more philosophical and more attention should have been paid to the dialogue (and pacing.) It has a few subtle points like the Bloody Stranger (the stranger the family protects at the cost of being sieged) having dog-tags (what was his military background.) Part of the problem with this film was that it tried to take a more moderate approach by playing down the middle touching some social and political issues and also trying to be a slasher film.

I like the sociopathic Polite Stranger who initiates the siege, somewhat bizarrely but effectively played by Rhys Wakefield. I tend to like calm and calculating antagonists. The Sandin family just happen to get in the way of his fun. He is probably a spoiled society frat boy the rest of year, he just happens to be homicidal for those few hours in his God-given New Founders rights.
The whole last act I could have done without. It was predicable based on dialogue early on (one aspect I was hoping to avoid when I noticed it), though it does add an interesting uneasiness and fits within the themes of the movie. Though that night I would take the advice Stone Cold Steve Austin used to give: Don't Trust Anybody.

A Walk in the Woods: 2.5/5

Film version of Bill Bryson's famous travelogue in which he hiked (some of) the Appalachian Trail. Robert Redford plays Bryson and a grizzled Nick Nolte plays his old friend Stephen Katz, it does a fair job of capturing bursts of the books' dry humour and wit I suppose, but the well written, descriptive prose of the book is lost (though some scenes recounting the funny 'episodes' do come from the book), on film it looks more like two old guys bickering at each other and occasionally falling over.

The Man Who Could Cheat Death 2/5 Hammer production is rather stagey, hardly a surprise as it's adapted from a play. Anton Diffring is the title character with the lovely Hazel Court and the rather stuffy here Christopher Lee in support.

Rear Window (USA, 1954) [DVD] - 4.5/5
It had been quite a while since the last time I saw this. Mark's recent post inspired me to watch it again. I always considered this my favourite Hitchcock movie (though Vertigo, Psycho and Dial M for Murder are almost as good). One thing I love about Hitchcock is how he often creates a long (sometimes short) shot which seems to be focusing on something (e.g. people in various apartments) until all of a sudden an important character or object (e.g. the suspected killer) enters the frame and the focus of the scene changes. I've never read (almost) anything about Hitchcock, but this must be something that has been discussed a lot.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (USA, 1974) [DCP] - 4/5
I wish I could have seen this from film, but since it was playing right here and I had a chance to take a few friends to see it for the first time, I settled for a digital screening. The ending is a text book example of how to end a film.

Shame about Leatherface himself,Gunnar Hansen who passed away yesterday. R.I.P. :(

The Serpent & The Rainbow 2.5/5 pretty good Wes Craven horror about voodoo in Haiti and a doctor's quest to find the magic powder that raises people from the dead.Loses it's way towards the end and Bill Pullman is a weak lead but some good atmosheric moments here.

Although Diffring had played the part on TV, Hammer originally cast Peter Cushing in the lead.

It's funny how Diffring and Lee seem not the slightest bit interested in Hazel Court. Obviously Diffring was not that way inclined in real life, but based on this I'm not surprised Lee had trouble getting "regular" acting jobs, before and after becoming a horror star.

Lee preferred to penetrate women with his teeth.

Shame the uncut version with shot of a topless Hazel Court has never surfaced.

I have seen the stills of Ms Court. I expect the footage turned up in Europe at the time, unless it was just for the producer's private collection.

The BBFC list the cinema version as cut. I expect the topless shot was one of the cuts (I can't imagine Hazel Court doing sleazy foreign market add-ons). Maybe Hammer thought that because the nudity wasn't salacious they could get it through intact? They were wrong!

Either the BBFC or the US Production Code trimmed down the firey finale - a longer of version of that does still exist.

Lisa and the Devil (Italy-1972) *½
Incomprehensible, tedious murder mystery from Mario Bava struggled to find distribution in its original form. It's easy to see why. I haven't seen the re-edit - House of Exorcism - and don't intend to as - let's be honest - it's probably worse. Elke Sommer (looking much older than her 31 years) looks understandably lost throughout, whilst a hammy Telly Savalas appears to have been left to his own devices. A mess.

Messenger Of Death 2/5 ok late 80's Bronson thriller plays like a tv movie for the most part. After a harrowing opening it settles down into a fairly straightforward plot of newspaper reporter Bronson investigating the murders of a Mormon family. not a lot of action but Bronson is always watchable even in middling fare like this.

Friday the 13th 3/5 seminal early 80's slasher still holds up well today.

Friday the 13th Part 2 2.5/5 decent sequel is more of the same.

Friday the 13th Part 3 2.5/5 ok 3rd movie but the formula is already getting repetitive.made in 3D and it shows watching it in 2D.

The Son Of Kong 2.5/5 Light, inoffensive quickie sequel to the classic original amazingly despite it's 69 minute running time takes it's time getting going  Baby Kong is a character though,a decent follow up.

The House of Exorcism version is pretty funny, and isn't that bad. Faux-Exorcist rather than Faux-Last Year at Marienbad. The original looks great but isn't very coherent or fun. Bava did much better.

Under the Skin (2013-UK) **½
Strange, pretentious, yet undeniably fascinating sci-fi character study of a alien in female guise seducing Glaswegian men for their skins. Scarlett Johansson is striking (in every way) but there's not a great deal of meat to the story. The mood and atmosphere carry this over, but there's an even more profound movie buried in here somewhere.

Witchfinder General (1968-UK) ***
Brutal, well-made historical drama-thriller (debatably a horror film) with Vincent Price excellent as true-life religious sadist Matthew Hopkins who tortured and executed innocents in the name of God and for profit. Probably the best of its kind and a highlight in British horror cinema.

Stoker (2012-USA-UK) *½
Deeply unsatisfying thriller, inspired by Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt, dials the creepy weirdness up to eleven, but is pretentious and ponderous, rambling and twisted.

Sliver (1993-USA) **½
Erotic thriller is better than its reputation would suggest, though far from perfect. Sharon Stone is good in vulnerable role polar opposite to her icy turn in Basic Instinct. Reshoots (after a disastrous preview) led to some plot holes, but thank the studio on this one because the original cut looks terrible.
