Splatter University (1984-USA) *½
Slasher pic is strictly amateur night, but I suppose deserves a smidgen of credit for its black sense of humour and subversive elements.

Quantum of Solace (2008-UK-USA) ***
Underrated follow-up to Casino Royale is fast-paced and flab-free. In time to come this one will be re-evaluated in the way OHMSS has been.

Fatal Instinct (1993-USA) **½
Pretty funny spoof of film noir and neo noir. Game cast does well.

I doubt it. There's a decent movie in there SOMEWHERE, but it's mostly been completely ruined in the editing-room, making it frustratingly unwatchable, sadly. I tried giving it a 2nd chance, but those action-scenes are REALLY fucked up in a bad bad way.

Sony never should have allowed this to be released like this.

I absolutely LOVE Casino Royale. Probably my favourite Bond. QoS was terrible. It wasn't a Bond movie but a short action-movie, and that COULD have been OK, but as an action-movie it fucked up as well because the action was unwatchable.

The problem with QoS is that it's neither here nor there, just dulll, dull, dull with no real spark or personality to give anyone a reason to re-evaluate it in years to come. The majority of people who like it did so from the start, the only way I can see it developing any kind of following in future is through people reconsidering it as the 2nd half of one long two-part film with Casino Royale.

Kill Bill has much the same problem, I don't think attitudes towards the rather duller 2nd part have changed much in the years since its release.

Dance With Me Henry (1956: Charles Barton):

Well I finished off all the Abbott and Costello films. This was their last one together. It would be Bud Abbot’s last movie while Costello’s second to last (The 30 Foot Bride of Candy Rock was his last before he died of a heart attack; I plan on getting this movie.) It is pretty ho-hum and not really recommended for anyone but those trying to complete their filmography since they have much better films available. The movie is not horrible, but it sometimes too listless and Costello just does not always seem to be in the mood for acting. I know their relationship was strained and their box office was declining* after so many movies, TV and radio appearances it seemed inevitable that they would eventually split up (amicably or not). They also changed type (a little) with Abbott being too much of a “black sheep” friend and something just feels off with the relationship between the two.

The movie’s plot could have been improved if it stuck with the initial “good dad” of Costello being persecuted by the system (and more Mary Wickes – she would later act in Sister Act 1 & 2) instead of adding in a murder/crime plot later on (though it adds one hilarious gag with Costello eating all his hidden food after he is interrogated – what is weird is that I have seen a Mr. Bean sketch (Rowan Atkinson) that is quite similar.

* Some state also because of the rise of Martin and Lewis, though I do think personally there was enough room for both. Abbott and Costello mostly suffered from overexposure. It was not always that they had new films coming out, but their films were rereleased quite often. They were also seen and heard everywhere (they had their own comic book) in the early 1950s.

I'm not sure if Kill Bill had that much of a "problem" to begin with. I know lots of people who always thought Vol. 2 was the better of the two. And if you look at IMDb ratings, there's almost no difference between the two volumes.

Kill Bill: Vol. 1: 8.1 (658,900 votes)
Kill Bill: Vol. 2: 8.0 (465,141 votes)

To me it seems the people who dislike it (in comparison to Vol. 1) are a relatively small but loud bunch. Well, maybe there's more of them in the real world (offline), but an IMDb rating with half million votes should be pretty mainstream, no?

In comparison, IMDb ratings for the two Bond films show a big difference:

Casino Royale: 8.0 (414,439 votes)
Quantum of Solace: 6.7 (290,276 votes)

There was a genuine perception here in the UK at least that it was somewhat overlong and ponderous compared to the first film & I generally agree with that. In the intervening years I've found reactions to the film to be mostly lukewarm to negative from the people around me, who represent the mainstream (no cineastes among my closest friends) and I don't think I know a single person who has seen it more than once.

I don't think QoS is a bad film either btw (or a good one), just boring.

Hey, I saw it 3 or 4 times in cinema, at least 3 times on dvd and once on blu-ray, so 7-10 times in total

Actually all of my close friends in Finland has seen it quite a few times, most of them more than once in cinema, and even my dad at least twice at home.

I also still remember the (crappy) review in the (only) local newspaper that compared Vol. 1 to teen comedies but said Vol. 2 is a "genuinely good movie".

But yeah, I see what you're saying, and I can understand why some people would find it inferior to Vol. 1. I may be surrounded by too many people with good taste  Still, the IMDb ratings are pretty interesting in this respect...

Personally I think it's near perfection, and the ending is pure perfection. The only part don't really like is the pregnancy test part.

I slightly preferred Kill Bill 2 over Kill Bill 1, but I'm not sure it should have been cut up into 2 separate parts to begin with, plus I'm not a big fan of the casting. Also didn't like the B&W censoring of the end-fight in Pt. 1. Overall, a pretty disappointing movie, which had great potential. story-wise. I would rate it (both parts combined) a 7 I think.

Mo wrote:I've heard how it was one long movie cut into 2 parts. But I have trouble believing that. It is a continuation obviously but it feels like 2 separate movies.
It was originally intended to be one film but during editing Tarantino couldn't produce a cut he was happy with that was under 4hrs, so he persuaded Weinstein to let him rework it as a two-parter. Technically you could argue that it never was one film because Tarantino never finished editing it as a single entity (I think). The Whole Bloody Affair is more of an extended reworking I suppose, seeing as they produced more anime scenes after the fact because they never fully produced the full flashback Tarantino originally intended first time round.

Real world friends that is, I have friends online who love it and hate it, a pretty even mix :D

Think I've seen it 3 times in total, my patience with it wearing thinner each time. I'm not a hug fan of Uma Thurman though tbh, I thought she overacted throughout Kill Bill (but then Daryl Hannah does as well and I thought her performance was quite fun at times). There are plenty of moments I think are inspired, but then you'll have a scene that's just drawn out to the point of tedium. I kinda hold out hope that one day The Whole Bloody Affair will get a BD release or proper theatrical run and I can watch it all in one go tbh, I think the pacing might even out with the higher-octane 1st part mixed in with the slower 2nd.

Yeah, at the end of the day our viewpoints are heavily subjective so I'm sure there are people here in the UK who have large groups of friends who all love it & vice versa for Finland I guess. I don't really find IMDB ratings that interesting for big releases like this because you get a lot of votes stemming from its cinema run that are skewed by hype, and Tarantino films always come with a lot of hype.

I never understood this. People can't accept an action movie that doesn't have a 10 minute end fight? I always though Vol. 2 had one of the most fastisfying ending in movie history. Brief, effective fight, followed by a scene that is epic as hell. I think anything longer would've been out of place here.

10 to Midnight (USA, 1983) [DVD] - 3.5/5
Enjoyable Bronson cop film with some very amusing logic (he's got a masturbation toy, he probably hasn't got laid in years, he must be the killer, obviously). Hardly exceptional, but solid entertainment, and relatively sleazy for a mainstream film, with a killer who commits all his crimes while naked, with many of his victims lacking clothing as well.

Cheap Thrills (USA, 2013) [VoD] - 3/5
Thriller/drama/satire/violence/black comedy where the dominating genre really depends on how you see it. It's a well made film, but a bit too predictable. The problem is, once you see where it's heading, nothing can really surprise you even if you don't see exactly what's coming, and it keeps repeating the same thing till the end. Solid cast and simple, but good characters are the biggest asset.

Sam Peckinpah's Smokey and the Bandit?
OK, it's a bit better than that, but not exactly a career highlight.

There was a CB craze in the UK in the 80s as well, everyone in my family seemed to have one. This was about the time Status Quo where at the peak of their fame so the country was obviously in a very dark place!
