Still, it's up to everyone to decide for themselves.
Trainwreck isn't a film i'll look to revisit any time soon but if someone put a gun to my head and i had to choose between that and Birdman....i know what i'd pick and Batman isn't in it :icon_suspect:

Raze (2013-USA) **
Sadistic, exceptionally violent actioner in which young women are kidnapped and forced to fight to the death in a badly-lit cave. The brutality on display here makes Fight Club look like Rocky IV. Too much savagery for my taste, cheap production values, and the ending is a disappointment. Zoe Bell is the lead skull cracker, while one time beauty Sherilyn Fenn (as a matriarchal villain) has really let herself go.

I do not mind pretentious. I liked Birdman, though it was not my top film of the year for 2014 (still working on that list.) It's funny how much Russian Ark influenced that film. Do any of you consider Russian Ark more pretentious than Birdman?

I'm not the biggest fan of Judd Apatow, so I do not know when I would get to Trainwreck (if ever). I would rather rewatch Taken for the tenth time or Road House for the first (going to look for a copy of that now.)

Taken is my favorite of the trilogy. It has also been a popular lend to as well (I lend a lot of movies) so that movie is not going anywhere in my collection (not that I get rid of movies much.)

Looking at Apatow's directorial filmography I have only seen The 40-Year-Old Virgin. I'm seen a few of his produced films which seems to have more range than his directed ones (weird that he is a producer of The Cable Guy).

The Cable Guy is the only decent Apatow movie and that's very imperfect.

Pretentious films get on my tits as much as crass Hollywood comedies.

I haven't seen Taken 3 yet -- I guess I've been dreading it a little given the terrible reviews.

You haven't lived until you've seen Road House. That's all I'm saying...

I like The Cable Guy a lot, but I think it of more of a Jim Carrey and Ben Stiller film (funny enough I like Stiller best when he is the director). It fits my style of humor and I still quote it from time to time. At the time I knew a guy like The Cable Guy (even looked like him.)

Taken 3 is a little too much of trying to be The Fugitive and with Olivier Megaton's hyperactive direction it makes it even more annoying. I found it decent, but easily could have been better. I saw it in the theater and while I own Taken 1 and 2 I have not picked up the third.

One man's pretentiousness is another man's sagacious art.

I'll look for a copy of Road House this week.

Taken is pretty entertaining, although I find Liam Neeson a bit of a stiff douche.
Taken 2 is absolutely terrible. Watched it a few months ago on TV, but man, what an awful ridiculous movie.

The Cable Guy is terrible. I like Jim Carrey, but everything about that movie stank, except for the cool 'I'm the Walrus' song. Ben Stiller is an awful awful guy. I really have no idea how guys like Stiller, Sandler, Will Ferrell and so many other horrible 'comedians' keep getting job offers, although admittedly in mediocre budget productions.

Seriously, whenever Americans try to make a 'comedy' movie, 9 times out of 10 they it's made by complete retards, for complete retards. It's like a bunch of 7 year olds smoked a bunch of weed, and made a movie. It's all so fucking predictable, low-brow, dumb, and often just very poor juvenile taste.

Obviously, there are some great USA comedies (Naked Gun, Hot Shots, Groundhog Day, etc etc), but there are just too damn many really REALLY poor comedies. White Chicks, Scary Movie, pretty much every Ben Stiller/Will Ferrell 'comedy', etc etc.

Surprisingly enough, I felt the film needed to be a little darker. Carrey has his moments, but Stiller can't or won't reign in his performance, which too often tends toward mugging and slapstick. The satirical jabs are among the best bits and I would've liked even more of them. A worthwhile effort though.

I thought the Cable Guy was pretty good, I liked the satire and dark humour and the parts when the character 'predicts' stuff like the rise of online gaming or Skype or something.

I do try to eschew obfuscation.

I would have had no problem with a darker The Cable Guy, but I just do not think it would have happened. Carrey was criticized for this at the time because it was not Ace Ventura-ish enough. Good comment on Stiller not being able to reign Carrey in at the time (like trying to reign in Robin Williams, it can be done but it takes tons of effort). I don't think he could have or maybe even wanted to. I will look for some information on that.

I still love the Vulcan/medieval scene though.

Taken 1: Good
Taken 2: Mediocre (I don't hate this one, though don't love it)
Taken 3: Mediocre deja vu

Die Another Day (2002-UK-USA) **
Disappointing 007 entry crashes and burns (after a good first act).
Too much CGI, too much flash and bang, too much silliness, too much everything...

The Dudesons Movie (Finland, 2006) [DVD] - 3.5/5
If you ever thought the stunts in Jackass were pretty fun but the show focused too much on gross and embarrassing stuff, here's something for you. The Dudesons are four guys from Finland who actually started this stuff a little bit before Jackass. They are equally stupid, but they focus much more on stunts and do it in frequently epic fashion. The stunts range from setting a sleeping friend's blanket on fire to crashing car through a trailer triggered with explosives, and involve pretty frequent hospital visits. They also have terrific chemistry: they really love each other and especially hurting each other. I believe the movie consists mostly of footage they filmed for one of their TV shows, but if you haven't seen the specific season that wouldn't be a problem. At 70 minutes the length is just good, too.

Trailer for one of their TV shows:

Jurassic World (2015-USA-China-Japan) **½
Competent blockbuster thrill-ride passes muster as entertainment if you like its predecessors (this is better than 3). The characters are clichéd but that's par for the course. What is a disappointment are the dinosaurs. There's something awry when you spend $150m on CGI and the results are less convincing than 20 year old animatronics.

^ A film I do want to eventually see.

Marlowe (1969: Paul Bogart)

The main reason I watched this film was that I knew Bruce Lee had a small appearance in it. This would be his first American film appearance (having done several TV episodes before this including The Green Hornet series) and a few years before his fateful role in The Big Boss when his popularity would skyrocket. It is no wonder that many reviews state his first scene in the film as a highlight of the movie. He literally trashes Marlowe’s office (fans of Bruce Lee have probably seen this scene already). Lee’s later scene is a disappointment because it seems so stupid what happens to him. I knew it was coming, but still the way it was done was hilariously bad.

The movie, based on the book from Raymond Chandler’s The Little Sister, looks and almost feels like a TV movie. In fact for years I thought it was. The direction from Paul Bogart is ho hum with little interest in movement or framing. The plot is a bit jumbled and was confusing at times for myself. The pacing is sometimes meandering. I have not read the book so I do not know if any of these issues were present there.

Good to see Jackie Coogan in a small role here. If you want to see how time can make a difference in an actor watch him in Chaplin’s The Kid and then watch an episode of the The Addam’s Family where he plays Uncle Fester.

I like Garner as Phillip Marlowe. One of many actors to play this role. His sense of humor for the character is there, though he does seem to miss a certain gravitas with the character. He does not seem as dangerous as Humphrey Bogart (or even Robert Mitchum) playing the same character in The Big Sleep (Howard Hawks as the director certainly helps.) The character is not too far from Maverick and certainly not too far from the later Rockford Files.

A couple of good reviews:
http://film.thedigitalfix.com/content/i ... chive.html: a nice review from clydefro.
http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/marlowe-1969: Ebert uses the term Karate which is technically incorrect.

Marlowe is one of the films that always seemed to be on the UK TCM. I love both Bruce scenes - it's a shame he's done with before the movie is half over.

Still hate what happens to him or how it happens to him, but he steals the scenes in which he is in. I bought the MOD release of this. It only comes with a trailer unfortunately. The print looks good though.

I'm surprised Bruce didn't turn up, pre-fame, in a Bond film or something.
