Yubari screened the original Idol is Dead short last winter... I was supposed to catch it, but ended up looking for a restaurant instead (and wasn't an easy task when the only diner in the neighborhood - a soup curry restaurant - was full... thanfully finally found some random nice granny selling dirt cheap soba  ). The new theatrical film is supposed to be set 2 years after the events of the short film, if I understood correctly.

The title is cool, btw: Idol is Dead: Non-chan's Big Propaganda War. Opens in January. Might turn out garbage, but the (slowly dying) otaku in me can't resist the temptation.

The original film comes out on DVD and BD also in January.

It is always a pleasure when the latest idol film, seemingly made to promote an up and coming sweet girl band, turns out a splatter movie!

Caught both films in cinema and wrote a quick review:

The second film is a disappointment, but consider me a fan of BiS from now on. And director Kato is a name to keep an eye on.

I’m totally in love with BiS! These girls are absolutely the best thing coming out of Japan these days!!!!

How many idol groups can go from this…

And the absolutely brilliant, slighly Hideaki Anno esque Primal ja Primal.2

Too bad Yufu Terashima left the band last year. But she’s got a solo single Yuufu raito (I’m not sure if that’s supposed to be read as “light” or “right”) coming later this month

Disbanding in July. Such a shame. Wonder if I should get a ticket for their final gig.

They had the final live at Yokohama Arena, performed 49 songs, the audience was smaller than expected, about 8000 people. The full capasity of the arena was 17 000, but I'm not sure if it was intended to be used at full capasity. The Japanese news sources are a bit sketchy about this. They seem to intentionally avoid mentioning the full capasity (none states 17 000) and instead mention that there were more people than expected after the initial news about 10 000 tickets remaining some days before the concert... But like I said, the reports are being unclear. It wasn't a smash hit, but I don't think it was necessarily a flop either.

Besides, BiS is pretty much open rebellion against mainstream taste, so we shouldn't necessarily expect 17 000 people to rush to their concert.

It doesn't look like they performed to an empty arena, though:

Re-post since the forum crashed and the old post went missing

BiS is not dead!

BiS disbanded, but you can see them in theaters in February in BiS Cannoball Run 2014, which is a documentary film about their last days before disbanding. What makes it really interesting is the director: Company Matsuo (yes, his first name really is "Company") is a legendary porn director famous for the hamedori style AV which he started. In hamedori Matsuo, who is the only crew member in his movies, doesn't only film himself having sex with "ordinary" girls, he documents every bit from receiving a call from a girl to travelling (possibly to another side of the country) to meet her, and thoroughly getting to know her and her motivations before the sex which might or might not come. This is all done to make it far more personal and real than the typical platonic sex seen in AV.

Now Matsuo is using his skills to make a doc about BiS. It seems like he used the same technique as Koji Shiraishi in Shirome and created some sort of fake program that his crew was supposed to be filming while not letting the girls know that they are actually making a documentary!

The tagline: Idols vs. Porn Director!

The film's title, BiS Cannoball Run 2014, is also a direct reference to Matsuo's other famous concept, Cannoball Run, which is a series of AV films in which contestants race through Japan, competing in both speed and the number or amateur" girls they have sex with during it. The latest one, from 2013, was edited into a movie version (the original dvd release is over 8 hours) called Telekura Cannoball Run 2013 and became a small phenomena - it's been playing in various arthouse cinemas (Shibuya Auditorium), movie theaters focusing on documentaries (Pole Pole) and trendy cinemas focusing on indie films Tokyo (Theater Shinjuku). Seems like, once again, Matsuo managed to capture something more than just sex on his cameras.

Yeah, the Hijokaidan dude, Jojo Hiroshige, played guitar with them, and they were doing the Hijokaidan stuff by throwing out a bunch of vomit and shit all over themselves like Hijokaidan used to do in the 1980s.

This is my favorite promo pic, though.

Japanese DVD release coming July 22. And it's called "The Complete Version". Supposed to have a 4.5 hour version on board if I understood correctly. Or maybe just 4.5 hours of footage in total on the discs. 2 Disc release.

And Amazon has labelled it as adult item. Likely to be a mistake, though.

I still haven't seen the film because I missed it in Yubari where ir played as double feature with Telekura Cannonball. I wanted to see it, but something top secret came up.

I managed to watch the first 85 min of Telekura Cannonball (the real English name is The Sex Cannon Ball Run 2013), though. So, it's about a bunch of AV directors who race from Tokyo to Sapporo and score points by having sex with telephone club girls (extra points for civilians picked up from the street). They film everything and get points for the different sex acts they manage to talk the girls into.

It was good so far, although it felt a bit too long. The film version is 130 min, edited from the original AV version which is like 8 hours or something. The film version emphasizes the documentary perspective rather than the AV content, but it still has quite a bit of AV in it. It's very funny at times, e.g. the guys get extra points if they manage to make the girl say his dick is the best she's ever encountered. And the one girl says his dick is the "3rd best", haha.

A Japanese friend of mine stayed till the end and said it was the best movie he has ever seen. He cried at the end. And bought the Japanese BD, which he has watched twice already. I'll try to borrow it from him some day and watch the last 45 min.
