Resident Evil Appocalypse

Post by BiscLimpkit »

So what did everyone think? Flawless victory IMO. It is now my 2nd favourite zombie movie (behind Resident Evil). I'm glad that Paul Anderson wrote this, instead of some incompetant random.

I thought it was pretty spooky...

Hey I loved it, yes its sillly at times, but it definaly did its job for me, not as good as RE1 bt a very different film really. Jill Valantine (Sienna Guillory) was staggering! I liked the film so much I have bought props from the film which have cost me quite a bit for some tata. :)

but the films got lots to like and all the UK reviews were 1 star shockers! morons the lot of them, I liked it and cannot wait for the dvd with commentary by Mila and Sienna. The film wasnt as well directed as part 1 and the use of slow mo by the director was badly done as he just double framed most the time! but on the whole the action was well done with some superb stunts and lots of zombies, not sure about that ending mind you.

It was an entertaining enough distraction amd not a bad way to spend an hour and a half... I had pretty low expectations so I was pleasantly suprised. It seemed a lot more like an actual Resident Evil film thqan the first one... It was a lot darker in tone I reckon.

I thought the fight in the cemetary was absolutely shit though, if there was any decent choreography or actual screen-fighting talent on display then it was lost in the midst of a flurry of quick cuts.

All the babes were hot though, Milla, Sienna and Sandrine Holt too!

I heard they added in deleted scenes to pad it out cuz they had cut all the violence.

I should have it in a few days hoepfully (fingers crossed) got someone to get it while they are over there :)

and from what I have seen no its not padding, its comedy and other scnes, padding it is not, as the film was short and you expected violence in it? I am sure I ever did as its not that type of film they never filmed any violcnce so noo need to pad it out :) (unless theres some sicko gorefest version out there they are keeping back)

I should see how different it makes it soon, just hope I get it soon.

I really enjoyed Resident Evil Apocalypse as well. :D It's very different from the original and more of an all-out action movie which while not flawless like others have said, it doesn't deserve the poor reviews it got. I really liked the end as it clearly indicates another sequel which I wanted to watch straight after but it hasn't even been made... Yet. According to IMDB RE3 is now in pre-production I just hope it doesn't disappoint like Blade Trinity did. :x

Romeo, did you get the German Extended version in the end? If so what was it like and how different was it?

I picked up a Hong Kong region 3 double disc version which unfortunately doesn't have the audio commentaries but has a full bit rate DTS that sounds fantastic! :D

Yes I got it and I loved it even more :)

the new footage really make the film better with some really great shots new to the film and far more comedy which acctually is funny! it does indeed make the film better thats for sure and I was just suprised that they cut these new scenes at all as they didnt need cutting and the film would have worked far better in the cinema and arouind the world. I have no idea why they didnt just release this extended version, it was crazy not to as it makes everything better.

I watched it a while back and wrote this, not sure if I go into much detail about the extended scenes but hey. :D

Resident Evil: Apocalypse: German Extended Edition 4 out of 5

Bigger, sexier and more scale to this sequel, but its not a better film really than part 1, but saying that it hits plenty of high notes and features two leading ladies that I could watch all day.

Continuing from the end shot of Resident Evil. Racoon city has now been overrun by a few zombies and the Evil Umbrella corporation is doing some scheming and corrupt things behind the scenes to keep it all from escalating out of control. The survivors in the infected city all have to keep alive long enough to figure a way out of this war zone, and try not to get bitten by a nasty zombie or two hundred.

As a sequel its quite good and expands on the first film very well in almost every way, most ways seem to be impressive improvements, yet it isn't made as well as the first part and it can be overedited and a bit too silly. Saying that its got some stonking action and some sequences which really are very impressive and it shows how far you can go with little cash as they made a top film, which is exciting and enjoyable and is a nice sequel.

Sienna Guillory is Jill Valentine. THE single best bit in the film bar none. She rules the film with sass, sex and looks which kill me and the zombies, she has it all and Sienna Guillory has now been propelled into stardom thanks to this film, as she really is Jill Valentine, for gods sake! just look at her. Sienna for me is the star of the film and she doesn't just look good, she looks amazing and her little get up works, her blue boob tube and black miniskirt are as sexy as anything anyone has worn in a film before, and add to that her little black hairdo and shiny boots and she's perfection, but with a gun and some kung fu fighting moves. She talks trash and acts cool and kicks plenty of zombies heads in. She doesn't get any of the big stand out action sequences to herself sadly, but what she does get are many nice moments to show her off to the camera and an entrance into the film which introduces her to us all with a bang or two. It makes me wish she was in part 1.

Apart from gorgeous Sienna, we have the very nice Milla Jovovich back as Alice maybe not as impressive to look at as Sienna, but she tries and looks quite sexy in her strange costume combo. This time she has been enhanced and souped up, so she is now an incredible killing machine with skills enough to take on everyone in the film and barley get a scratch. Now we get to see action scenes on a more Epic scale performed by the super Milla in a full on action role, it makes the first film seem positively tame in comparison. Milla is armed to the teeth and ready for what comes to her, that includes taking on Lickers efficiently or wiping out a few Umbrella guards here and there with some nice moves. Zombies don't stand a chance against her this time around as she snaps necks and kicks the backbones out of them. We see amazing action from Milla (and her impressive stunt double, not that you would notice). Alice runs down the side of a building in some impressive shots and evades a helicopters minigun strafe in some eye boggling slow motion, as windows explode with glass and bullets and in another sequence blows the hell out of some zombie dogs as a fire ball engulfs her. All very tasty stuff.

She takes on legions of undead and quite a few Umbrella staff members which all is fine and dandy. This time its the Nemesis which brings out the best action in her. Nemesis is 8 feet of massive unstoppable experimental monster and at times he can look superb, with his rocket launcher and one handed 3000 rounds a minute machine gun, he is imposing and has power and scale to him and works as a formidable bad guy in the film and can take a battering from anyone who stands in his way.
The first meeting between Alice and the Nemesis is short and sweet and they exchange ammo and a small chase begins and its all action packed and nicely made. With Alice leaping from explosions at just the right moments in impressive slow motion obviously, and generally blowing the crap out of Nemesis, but he is a hard one to crack so doesn't really mind being filled full of holes. They even get some hand to hand action near the end, but sadly it isn't as impressive for reasons I will explain later.

Again like the 1st film, the cast is top notch and there are loads of very likeable characters among the cast. Oded Fehr as Carlos Olivera is a good addition to the film and his swat guy role is fun and he gets to play around with guns plenty and interact with the ladies, and his introduction Helicopter jump action sequence is a cracker.
Sandrine Holt as perky newscaster Terri Morales is another nice addition to the cast, she is comic relief and says what we think unlike the rest of the cast who all seem trained to kill and survive, she is a more normal person and get plenty of comedy and is expanded a little in this new cut, and she's nice to look at.
Mike Epps is the true comic insertion as L.J. his role is hilarious at times and in this new cut he gets even funnier moments, usually consisting of snappy dialogue after the action has occurred. He gets plenty of trash talk to dish out to everyone, especially to the the Nemesis after there 1st encounter. His jokes are fun and playful and he gets to do some funny moments of swearing, and in this new cut gets far more scenes that made me laugh out loud like dissing the Nemesis and calling Carlos Olivera Elvis (hey its funnier than it sounds).
Really the cast are great and do as required, not as perfect as the first film, but I cannot expect perfection all the time. Some characters are silly like little girl Angie Ashford and her father Dr. Ashford both of whome seem a little dodgy at many points in the film, but for such a large cast there's plenty characters in the film to like.

The setting this time around out in the open in a city, among the streets and alleys gives the film a much bigger feel to it, as we are not confined to an underground base. It feels much larger and when we see street battles involving masses of police, army, S.W.A.T and other various gun totting humans against hordes of advancing zombies it does feel good. Seeing masses of zombies being mown down by gun fore is a sight you want to see, and we see plenty of it in the film. The size of the film is noticeably bigger and many times it just feels such a big advancement from the first film and the streets are all dressed well and look like a war has erupted all around, with cars on fire burning in the night, and general death and destruction all around. It feels a big film and some big shots show us all around the city's various nightime locations.

The lickers are far more finished than in part 1 and some shots look very effective indeed and the zombie dogs too look really good onscreen and generally the CGI is top notch in almost every single shot and mix that with the brilliant and large scale stunts and action scenes and its very well made all round. The CGI enhancements and make up are all great and you cannot really fault the film in these departments, as its all looking as good as it can and some scenes look like they cost a fortune and are on massive scales and really the film works. Its not a bloody film again, but it does feature enough bites and general nasty moments to keep the films tone going, as again its not a gore film. For me its a big dumb action movie and there aint nothing wrong with that.

The problems in the film are more apparent than I would like, gone are bad CGI as its pretty good all round in this film and it looks very expensive as the locations, sets and general action all seems very well created and executed. Its mainly down to the director where my problems lie. He films the action like crap sometimes, sadly mostly during the fight scenes between the various people in the film, he cuts the fights up far to much into over edited sometimes trashy looking scenes. The problem is most this action was done for real in long takes and from what I have seen in the behind the scenes stuff it was impressive looking and all the fights were great and looked skilful, yet the director Alexander Witt just doesn't seem to know when he has a good thing. So he cuts the takes up into lots of little edits and uses slow motion badly and speeds the film up even! two massive mistakes there as the slow motion in the film sometimes is awful, the zombies at times are running and they misjudged that and I think they knew this, so they do a stupid slow motion blur effect when they are advancing along the dark streets and frankly its bloody shocking looking.

The same goes for some of the fights, the graveyard fight scenes with Jill and Alice against zombies was great and looked effective and professionally choreographed in the behind the scenes footage, but in the film its sliced up so much into one second cuts and silly speed ups it just looks very disappointing. You can see what's going on and you get the idea, but my god he messed up some fine action which could have been edited so well by another director. So in my eyes the director shot himself in the foot as everything was there on film, and when he got into editing he messed it up.

The same goes for the Nemesis Vs Alice fight, its got lots going for it and they both seem capable and effective and do some great moves on each other, but the director just cannot handle it in the editing and makes it seem worse than it actually is, such a shame really and I think someone should just go back into the film and re-edit a few scenes and shots and then the film would work far more. If anything it only makes the people performing these marital arts moves seem like they have no skills or capabilities, when from the behind the scenes footage I have seen, they obviously have in spades and the director should be ashamed for what he did to the casts standout scenes.

The other problems are far less severe than them above, some silly shooting problems again from police etc.. they still don't seem to shoot them in the head, they know to do this and still don't. So watching a group of 40 or so heavily armed men take on maybe 100 or so zombies should be a walk over, but they just don't seem to shoot in the head and it gets on my nerves when other groups in the film take out loads with far smaller weapons and people. Maybe in the 3rd film they will learn, shoot the head before you shoot the rest of the body. I would also like to have seen the Nemesis maybe kicking a few Zombie heads in. As surely a few straggled into his path along his journey, maybe they did, but we just didn't see them, so not a problem just an observation.

Gone is the amazing soundtrack and moody ambient noise from part 1, and in come rock and grunge pumped up loud to drown out the action which can be fine, but it isn't done as well as I would have liked in this film as I know how good part 1 sounded and used the sound to work with the film. The soundtrack for this one does its job and sometimes picks some cracking tracks for certain scenes (the introduction of Jill Valentine has funky music), but on the whole it does not use music as well as its predecessor and it doesn't stand out sonically, apart from the gun fire and surround effects for the big action scenes. They should have got Marilyn Manson back to create a disorientating and frankly superb soundtrack like the forst film.

In the end its a really great film with some stunning action scenes which really lay down some top entertainment in front of you. The cast, effects, big scale city locations and story all do the good stuff for me, and if the director would have layed off the silly editing then the film would have been even better. As it stands its a worthy sequel and thanks to Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine the films comes off to be a sexy thrill ride, flawed for sure, but still an exciting ride. Bring on part 3 and 4.

that's one hell of a review Romero and I agree with most of it. Although from what I remember the the soundtrack was just fine and there was only one star of the film which was Milla Jovovich who completely overshadowed Sienna in every department especially looks!

Apparently the third instalment is going to be called Resident Evil : Afterlife and I really hope they can take this to the next level (no pun intended). Apparently this film will be based on the 4th Resident evil game, if that means anything to anyone? Not being a gamer myself probably helps my enjoyment of these movies as I don't know anything beyond the films.

I think its nice to know a little about the games, but no one needs to have seen or played them :) some people get very picky and want an exact copy of the games, which would be imposible.

Part 3 should be going ahead and filming soon, so we never now it may be out late next year if we are lucky (as long as its good).

In RE4 (the game) they decided that the formula was getting stale (believe me, it was drier than stale crackers), so they completely adopted an all new gameplay model (the the old one that had been the staple of the series was utter rubbish) and abandoned the Umbrella Corp/zombies created by viruses storyline and used a new one.

Bare with me, the story sounds really cheesy but is really well presented in the game. Racoon City was nuked and Umbrella Corp. was destroyed by the US government. 2 years later, the hero of RE2 (game) former RPD cop Leon Kennedy (who's know working for a secret government organisation under direct control of the US president) has been assigned to be the bodyguard of the president's daughter. She has been kidnapped and there have sightings of her in a rural village in Spain. Naturally Leon is deployed. The antagonists are the villagers, they're not zombies, but they're definitely not human either.

I watched Resident Evil Apocalypse again this last weekend and the extras for the first time. I hope at a later date a special edition or directors cut is released with different edits of the nemesis finale fight sequence and the graveyard fight sequence along with the new footage used in the German extended edition.

I was also struck by Sienna Guillory on the extras disk. She definitely didn't look that hot in the film but in the interviews her face and hair and everything just looks like the delicious Kate Beckensale!

Sienna Guillory is a goddess man! in the film, in life! and she and Milla did some great long takes in the fights :( but the directors such a moron he cut them up and ruined them :( the behind the scenes stuff on my german dvd proved they were good at it and looked great in the fights, then that diretor got his hands on the footage :(

Let's hope for a special edition or extended cut somewhere down the line incorporating that footage! Maybe that's a possibility in the run-up to Resident evil 3 being released in the cinemas? Actually I'd be surprised if they didn't release an "unrated cut" dvd then, I just hope they include differently cut fight sequences too.
