USA Shaw Brothers Releases
Ok i've virtually given up on many more of these ever showing up on blu-ray. with that in mind, a lot of my dvds are the original IVL Region 3 releases, my query is are the few that been released in the USA an improvement? Some of the DD ones for example can be picked up for around £3 delivered on Amazon but if they are exactly the same it's not worth the effort?

Depends on the title, honestly.
Some are better, some worse.
Which titles were you thinking of...?

Executioners from Shaolin and Five Shaolin Masters are both upgrades with original Mandarin mono and progressive transfers.saltysam wrote:Well for a start i was looking at the DD 4 film set of Executioners From Shaolin/Five Shaolin Masters/Mad Monkey Kung Fu/Martial Arts Of Shaolin. i have the IVL's of the first three and don't own the 4th....don't think i've ever seen it. it's £7.16 delivered from Amazon..£1.79 a film..
Mad Monkey Kung Fu loses the original Cantonese (IVL has a remix) and thus should be avoided.
Martial Arts of Shaolin is a PAL-to-NTSC transfer (as per the IVL) but (unlike the IVL) has Mandarin mono.
I'd say 3/4 are worth rebuying.

cheers...i'll get the 4 pack then...is there a decent release of Mad Monkey Kung Fu? i'll switch discs and put the IVL in the pack as it sounds like the lesser of two evils.Markgway wrote:Executioners from Shaolin and Five Shaolin Masters are both upgrades with original Mandarin mono and progressive transfers.saltysam wrote:Well for a start i was looking at the DD 4 film set of Executioners From Shaolin/Five Shaolin Masters/Mad Monkey Kung Fu/Martial Arts Of Shaolin. i have the IVL's of the first three and don't own the 4th....don't think i've ever seen it. it's £7.16 delivered from Amazon..£1.79 a film..

AFAIK, apart from the IVL, only the French DVD has Cantonese (mono in this case). Alas, being French there are no English subs, so if you need subs the IVL is the only option.saltysam wrote:is there a decent release of Mad Monkey Kung Fu? i'll switch discs and put the IVL in the pack as it sounds like the lesser of two evils.
All of those are Mandarin mono, but Avenging Eagle should be Cantonese, IIRC. I think Blood Brothers is a standards conversion, whereas the German DVD I have is progressive PAL.how are the DD versions of Golden Swallow/Killer Clans/Blood Brothers/Avenging Eagle? they are avilable for buttons as well.

Is there a DVD/BD of The Heroic Ones that improves on the IVL?

Thanks
I may upgrade if I can find it for a good price (I did quite a lot of upgrading recently), do you know if the film is uncut?
Thanks again

I'm not aware of any cuts, other than the usual frame cuts, but then I don't own the film myself so have looked too deeply into the matter.

I've got that Heroic Ones blu-ray, it's an improvement on the old IVL but far from stellar.

I think it's safe to say we wont have any more R1 releases. Apparently, Media Blasters is done. So your only hope is for the Weinsteins to outsource their releases from other companies. Real shame as I was hoping for the next batch of releases to come out ages ago but it's essentially dead.

I just ordered Well Go's mediocre Jade Tiger DVD because it has Mandarin mono.

I have that version but have yet to watch it . Had the IVL version. Great film. It's gonna be standard Well Go vid quality so don't expect it to be perfect but all things considered is probably the best option out there right now.Markgway wrote:I just ordered Well Go's mediocre Jade Tiger DVD because it has Mandarin mono.
