Cantonese/Mandarin soundtrack differences
Is it normal for Mandarin soundtracks to have different/additional music and sound effects compared to the Cantonese one? The one for Black Mask does, and I'm just confused why this is, and wondering if any other films do too

I've heard lots of instances where music is different on each dub. Songs can be different due to the dialect etc.

Sorry, when I said sound effects I was actually referring to a kind of musical sound effect if you get me, like when someone slips on a banana peel haha.Markgway wrote:foley tends to be the same.

Unfortunately that's all that's offered on the Blu-ray in question, I highly doubt the different music has anything to do with the remix though. It's a shame there's no original track though because the music is far too low in the mix on the Cantonese audio.Ivan Drago wrote:Remixes suck

I've just noticed this applies to Royal Warriors too, when Michelle Yeoh gets on the plane at the beginning, there's no music in the Cantonese tracks (remixes and original), but there is in the Mandarin!
Edit: The 'original' Cantonese sounds very much like a down-mix though.

This reminds me of Drunken Master 2.
Tai Seng VHS' / Mei Ah VCD's: During the end fight where Jackie pauses to go smash up some crates, the music carries on while he does it. On all DVD releases I've seen, the music pauses when Jackie does and comes back in once he charges at Ken Lo.

If you're talking about the Joy Sales or Fox DVDs it's a downmix.gasteropod wrote:I've just noticed this applies to Royal Warriors too, when Michelle Yeoh gets on the plane at the beginning, there's no music in the Cantonese tracks (remixes and original), but there is in the Mandarin!

Re: Cantonese/Mandarin soundtrack differences
'Black Mask' is known to have two Chinese-language versions with differing sound effects: Compare the early Mandarin (Taiwanese and Singapore LDs - according to Spannick) and the English export (Spanish DVD) versions with the Cantonese (Mei Ah remaster) and UK (BMG) versions.
I updated the Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Mask_(film)) a while ago, but it needs more information - accounting for the versions I just mentioned, and also the Kam & Ronson releases.
