Could somebody please help me indentify the stills

Post by Tenchu1998 »

Hello, folks.

So, I've been a fan of this ensemble, Naked City, for a couple of years now. The creator of the band, composer/musician John Zorn, spent 10 years off and on in Japan, and at the time (1984 - 1994? Not sure.) was collecting loads of Japanese movies, original posters, stills, etc, etc. Actually, John Zorn wrote the introduction for the first Criterion Edition of the 'Branded to Kill' DVD, and shared a bit of his adventures to how he discovered the world of Japanese Cinema.

Anyways, the first Naked City CD and 12", Torture Garden (1989), features some stills from Japanese movies (or just one movie?), and I've always been curious to where the stills are from. This seems to be the place to ask, and I hope you could help me out, eh.

Here's the link to the CD: http://www.discogs.com/Naked-City-Tortu ... ase/265804

Here are some of the pictures:

The 2nd pic, is that 'Inferno of Torture'? I haven't seen that movie yet, so I'm not sure.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. :)

I did not know that, thanks - I'm a fan of John Zorn, got quite a few of his albums, 'IAO' is my favourite :) I don't know which films those photos are from though I'm afraid.

Yeah, Zorn is incredible. I also love a lot of the work he's composed and been involved in. The "filecard" pieces are really special-- he really manages to musically capture the artist(s) he's drawing upon. He just really channels the world of cinema and literature in a really magic kind of a way.

Oh well. I'm sure somebody will recognize the stills. It so looks like that 2nd picture is from Teruo Ishii's 'Inferno of Torture'. I need to get to it and watch that movie.

You're correct. At first I wasn't entirely sure if they were real stills or a very accurate homage, as I didn't recognize them as 100% identical to Inferno of Torture scenes / stills despite having seen the film several times (including in cinema last week) and owning the Toei dvd.

However, taking a very close look I can confirm at least one of the pictures is a original still. Based on that I suppose the others (that resemble Inferno) are also original stills (rather than re-creations) that I just haven't come across and weren't featured on the Toei dvd.

However, some of the pictures, like the first and the last, don't appear to be from Inferno of Torture. Either that, or they represent very odd marketing material that doesn't have anything to do with the film.
