K-911 - 3.5/5
I recorded this from Sky Movies about 10 years ago. Picked up the DVD for 50p yesterday. A pointless sequel, but I rather enjoyed it.

Assassination Games **½
Van Damme's best film for the last ten years.
A classic? No. But I can see why it got a limited run in US theatres.
It's not an action fest per se but there's enough violence to keep up the momentum.
Van Damme is on fine form and unless you're expecting another Kickboxer one shouldn't be disappointed.

Basket Case (1983) - 3/5
Pretty funny, I loved it when the monster trashed the room, and its groaning when raping a woman.

Saw that one at the cinema. I'd probably give it the same rating.

Intriguing time-loop horror/thriller.

Demon Seed (1977) - 3/5
Decent little 2001: A Space Odyssey rip-off, a bit goofy in parts.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973) - 2/5
Old-fashioned, cheap made-for-TV production, some bits with coloured lighting were kinda cool but overall I found it quite boring.

Dagon (2001) - 2.5/5
Let down by its low budget, but I'm always interested in films featuring ritual sacrifices and there's a cool scene where a man has his face cut off, was surprisingly convincing!
The film also reminded me of Resident Evil 4 & 5.

It's a good-un isn't it. The ending is rather freaky in a 70s sort of way.gasteropod wrote:Demon Seed (1977) - 3/5

The Funhouse (1981) - 2.5/5
It became quite tedious and quickly lost any sense of tension it once had, I don't think they should have unmasked the disfigured killer so early on. Still, it wasn't all bad.

Drive Angry (USA, 2010) – 3.5/5
An enjoyable Cagesploitation film with good attitude and beautiful cars. Besides, who in their right mind wouldn't want to see a movie where Nick goes postal on bad guys while banging an ugly waitress at the same time! Unfortunately the soundtrack misses more often than not. The CGI is bad enough to become a positive at times.
Otaku (France, 1994) – 2/5
A look at the Japanese otaku culture by French documentarians Jackie Bastide & Jean-Jacques Beineix. Originally released in various forms ranging from 45 minutes to three hours the film hasn’t – at least in the 77 minute form – quite survived the test of time. While no doubt valuable at the time of its release, its otaku insights provide little news for today’s viewers. Its strengths are, a bit paradoxically, in non-otaku topics. The enjou kousai girl interviews are still interesting, and the live footage of Sion Sono’s Tokyo GaGaGa gang taking over Tokyo is priceless.

La tête contre les murs (Head Against the Wall) (1959) - 3.5/5
It ended a bit prematurely for me, but otherwise was good and already featured many of the stylistic elements Franju would later use for Judex.

My Bloody Valentine 3D - 2/5
Picked up the Blu-ray with two pairs of 3D glasses for a fiver. In the end, I ended up with sore eyes and a really bad headache.

I'd never buy 3D films for the home. Many are those awful blue/red glasses and even proper ones I'm not interested in. I cannot stand wearing glasses in a cinema, even more so at home.
