The film is based partly on Sono's friend, who was a tosatsu maniac, and partly on Sono himself. Sono had quite an interesting youth. He ran from home to Tokyo when he was 17. There he met a charming older lady, and had high hopes of losing his virginity with her. Turned out, the woman was suicidal maniac looking for someone to die with. But Sono didn't want to die, so she changed her plan. She returned to her parents with Sono, with Sono playing her husband. This act continued for a few weeks until Sono "escaped". He never really found out whether the parents bought the act or not. Sono later adapted these events into his film Noriko's Dinner Table.

Later, probably in Tokyo again, Sono joined some kind of a religious cult. He got into trouble with the police while being part of this cult, and said that if he had not quit he would probably have become a terrorist. These events inspired Love Exposure.

Fast forward some years, and Sono has moved to California. He was supposed to be studying, but he spent most of his time watching grindhouse films and porn. He later adapted some of this stuff into a film called Hazard, which he shot in New York.

After this he founded Tokyo GAGAGA, which was a querilla street performance poetry group. This group got quite famous. These days many people like punk musicians have fond memories of the good old days when Sono's group was having aggressive, protest like performances on streets and subway stations. Of course with no permits, and always trouble with the police.

Sono himself was a poet before becoming a filmmaker. He got international recognition in the early 90's when his movies Bicycle Sighs and The Room played in Berlin. If I remember correctly Japan was not happy at all with rebel Sono's movies being shown abroad.

But his final international breakthrough came in 2002 with Suicide Club. Everybody hates it in Japan (too touchy subject and too accurate points) but it become an instant cult classic in in festival circuit. It's popularity is partly based on wrong reasons, though. It's a very challenging movie and you need strong knowledge of Japanese society and Japanese way of thinking in order to interpret it. But it got very popular with foreigners because of its strangness and goriness (which are also part of its appeal, though). I have to admit that while I loved it from the first time, it took me several years before I even started to understand it.

It's obviously a matter of perspective because I thought it was the creepiest anti-romance I've ever seen. These characters made me want to take a shower (by myself).
It's amazingly entertaining with brilliant soundtrack
The soundtrack was one of the better elements. I rather liked that chirpy song that popped up from time to time.
hilariously imaginative tosatsu techniques
A learning experience for you then? :D
movie references (Female Prisoner Scorpion)
I didn't get any of those... I presume that's to do with the Miss Scorpion guise?
Yoshihiro Nishimura gore effects
When people bleed in this film they REALLY bleed. :o
Appreciate the try. It's not your fault you don't like great movies :D
I'm sure there's stuff I love that means nothing to you. That's what opinions are for. Has anyone else on the board seen it? Maybe they're on your side?

I've seen it, I'd rate it around 3.5-4/5.

No, no, but... maybe the film doesnt hit quite as hard if you don't live (physically or mentally) in the same world as the characters do. I do very much. This is my Japan. Hirokazu Koreeda and Ozu and go kiss my ass :D

That was just basic chanbara style violence from the 70's. Nishimura's own films are much bloodier (in his latest, Helldriver, he used 8000 litres of blood...) than Sono's. But they're old pals, so Sono usually invites him to join the party. They also worked together in Sono's serial killer film Cold Fish, which Sono did because Love Expo and Be Sure to Share had given him an overdose of love and tears. So he needed to kill everyone again...

I've never been 'into' Japanese culture and so my appreciation for Japanese film is very much that of a gaijin. I would imagine that my opinion is more reflective of a mainstream western audience than those well versed in Japanese cinema and immersed in their culture (such as yourself).

You may disagree with this (in fact I've no doubt you will) but I found the 'romance' in LE utterly insincere. I never for a second believed that these characters loved each other. I don't think they even knew what love is. Thus I had zero emotional investment in them or the story. At times I wondered if the director was playing a joke on his audience and kept waiting for some sort of ironic punchline.
Meiko Kaji / Female Prisoner Scorpion
I see. That might have amused me had I been aware of that character in advance.

I've seen a couple of the Baby Cart series so I know abut the chanbara tradition of geysers of blood... it's just odd seeing it in such a contemporary non-action movie setting. But then not that many movie shows an abused girl cutting off a guy's dick!

The Rise and Fall of the Unparalleled Band (Japan, 2010) – 3.5/5
The Guilties are a legend! They don’t actually exist, but that hasn’t kept indie director Wataru Hiranami from making a semi-documentaristic movie about them. Divided into chapters named after songs on the sole Guilties album, the film ignores the most traditional story narrative and presents the band’s history in short, 5-10 minute fragments. Falling somewhere between sketch collection and story film in terms of form, it effectively allows viewers to do some thinking on their own. Storyline itself takes a few overly familiar tuns towards the end, but the slightly grainy digital cinematography adds a nice layer of realism into the movie. Characters are mostly excellent, with guitarist Tanaka (Kento Hosoda), on the run from ‘That 70’s Show’ and given up on verbal communication for “unspecified reasons”, being the highlight. All in all, a nice little movie in a genre overpopulated by plastic disco-band films.

Oldboy **

Second attempt at this one... finally got all the way thru.
I didn't hate it, but it really wasn't worth the effort.
I guess I just don't love Korean movies as much as everyone else...
Brutal, twisted revenge movie is pretentious and way over the top.

Have you seen Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance Mark? The Oldboy hype machine seemed to fade that film into obscurity when it became the Korean Cannes darling, it's the much superior film in Wook's ouevre imo.

And no you probably won't be inclined to like many Korean films as many Korean films seem to revel in vulgar characters. I'd stick to the more understated dramas, maybe try something like Feathers in the Wind.

From the Vengeance trilogy, I'd rate Sympathy for Lady Vengeance as my favourite.

Old Boy was good story-wise but a bit too dark for my liking, and I didn't care that much for the Mr. Vengeance either, although it isn't a bad movie. It just didn't connect with me character-wise and such.

Sympathy for Lady Vengeace is a lot more easy to get into, almost 'lighter' than the other two, and the soundtrack is fantastic.

The Vengeance-movies aren't a really good start when you want to sample Korean movies though. Korean cinema is much more varied than just these dark bleak revenge movie which can go a bit OTT with the 'cruelty'.

I'm not too sure... I'm gonna say 'no' but I definately have seen 'Lady Vengeance' though I don't remember much of anything about that one. Even the Korean movies I've seen that are 'OK' never seem to make much of an impression on me for some reason. I guess if I don't love or hate a movie I sometimes forget it.

Broken Oath 2.5/5 Angela Mao's final GH film is a loose retread of Lady Snowblood, decent enough in the main with some ok fight scenes.Sammo is in there and i think Tarantino has seen this movie as her final duel with him is reminiscent of one in Kill Bill.

Well, I don't care that much for Korean movies either, because Korea just isn't my world, and the general Korean mindset (as far as movies go) doesn't interest me that much. Oldboy I love because it's audio-visually perfect (plus a few other things), but I'm not interested in the psychology and culture beyond that. That certainly sets some limitations to enjoying films, all the more so if you don't click with the Korean mindset at all. Still, I'd assume that you'd find a few great films if you looked hard enough.

But if you don't, that's ok. Lately I've been thinking "objective movie viewing" really is bullshit. Sure, you should check out different kinds of movies from different countries and enjoy the beautiful street hookers. But if you don't have your own bitch at home you're really missing a lot. (what the fuck am I writing here... :D ). I mean you should really have something that is your thing, something that year after year you learn to understand better. For me it's Japan (and I think it's gonna be a life long learning journey... the culture, and the Japanese mindset that is), for you I suppose it's HK. And it's good to enjoy great films from other countries, too, as these can be fun adventures. But it's also ok not to dig something that doesn't go along with your thinking.

I kinda hate people who don't have any such focus and try to like all "good" films (praise Seven Samurai and Citizen Kane just because they've been declared as official masterpieces) when in reality the were about to fall asleep while watching it. In the end, you're watching movies for your own enjoyment, and that's exactly how you can have the best experiences.

(a bit wide topic, though, and it's 1:46 am. I'm trying to think if there are major logical gaps in my thinking there... :D Oh well, post anyway)

You make some good points as always...

I feel the same about my own movie watching, I always try to go in with an open mind...but try not to be ashamed of my own viewing tastes as well.

I'll watch a perfectly good drama and say it was good, but never want to watch it again...straight dramas not my thing, but I can see a 'lesser' HK movie or sci-fi/fantasy film or B-movie and say I LOVE THIS MOVIE, and make it 'mine' (dvd/blu gets proudly kept on the shelf).

HK stuff is definitely my 'bitch'...I can sample all other world stuff but HK movies are somehow in tune with my viewing mojo.

Plus I totally believe there's just not enough time in one lifetime to watch all the great movies (and that in itself is no reason to get stressed as completest behaviour takes the joy out of most things)...for one you'd miss out on all the great music, books and places to visit etc etc.
2010 - The return of the HK movie industry :)

As long as it sounds interesting I'll give anything a go no matter which country it's from.

Chinese movies are my personal pleasure, but if it's good then I don't really care where it was made.

I'm sure there are great Korean movies out there, I just haven't found one that's for me yet.

I guess I'm different to everyone else on here then, as I didn't rate Oldboy much at all. It was ok, but nothing more. Lady Vengeance was shit. Got so bored by it. Gave it 2 out of 5. But I thought Sympathy for Mr Vengeance was absolutely awesome - 4.5 out of 5.

I love both films 'Seven Samurai' and 'Citizen Kane'. Do you hate me now?
By the way, 'Oldboy' is a Japanese manga, hence in its roots a Japanese mindset. So there is that.

The Man from Nowhere - 4.5/5
Would definiteley have been a 5/5 if there weren't those minor plot holes. Great action und justified violence.
