Old school anime is better than new school anime

IMO of course.

Not sure how many of B&B members are into anime. But I much prefer traditional sketchy hand drawn productions such as Ninja Scroll and Fist of the North Star to today's efforts.

I think a lot of today's anime is aimed towards children.

Elfen Lied has been getting a lot of praise. I thought it was watchable but undeniably childish, even with all its blood and sex.

Same with Naruto, Last Exhile and Prince of Tennis, can't distinguish it from Pokemon to be honest.

Just with all the gloss and subtle CGI... I think there's more emphasis on how to present the animation, as opposed to an entertaining story.

The only new anime series I've enjoyed is GTO.

Currently watching the 1984 (?) series of Fist of the North Star (condensed version). Loving it so far.

GTO was awesome, although I havent seen the last couple of episodes as they didnt have very good fansubs.

I quite like Naruto, although whenever they need fillers to hold the story up a bit, it does take a drop in quality...
Samurai Champloo and bebop are also pretty cool...

I always used to love Macron 1, which is pretty old I guess... plus the anime of Peter Pan was very cool

Macross 7 I thought was amazing. Macross Zero on the other hand (a new anime series) is pale in comparison.

I dont know any of the macross tv series. I saw the 4 part OAV which was OK I guess... a bit slow moving. Tv series is supposedly a lot better.

I also saw the first 3 episodes of the new series, but thought it was rpetty boring stuff...

the fist of the north star series are my all time favorite anime. in fact when i first joined bnb it was pretty much all i went on about. Ninja scrolls is pretty cool, so is 3 x 3 eyes and battle angel alita.

but there are newer series that are great too, samurai champaloo and bleach are both totally ace with witch hunter robin being pretty cool too.

but you're right many of the newer anime series do seemed to be aimed at kids, or more likely juvenile adults

Fist of the North Star, Ninja Scroll and Akira are my absolute fav, that what got me started in Anime. I do love the kenshin series, because it has such a nice backdrop and stories to it. I highly recommend some people watching these.

Has anyone see the series?

I liked Ghost In The Shell too, though I'd like to see some anime TV series as opposed to movies

The new Ghost in the Shell series is OK I guess. I only saw the first 4-5 episodes and of those, half of them were pretty cool/interesting, and the others were a bit boring... so it's worth watching although not all episodes are equally entertaining...

The best Anime series ever is 'Grendizer' and it is from the 1970's. It is from the same guys who made 'Mazinger Z', but with a way more dramatic storyline and with actual human beings piloting the meta-robots. They did 74 episodes and I have them all on tape from Jordan. The episodes were dubbed into Arabic and the dubbing is one of the best jobs an Arabic dubbing studio has ever done.

In France 'Grendizer' is known as 'Goldorak'. Tom, you might know it.

The guy in my avatar is Daisuke, masked into Duke Fleed, the pilot of the Grendizer robot. Only two of his best friends know that he is Duke Fleed. Awesome story, but hard to write it down quickly and time is not on my side right now.

Alot of modern anime is often done on the cheap. In many cases they do the actual drawings/backgrounds in Japan and then farm them out to studios in Korea (becuz it's cheaper) to to be animated, usually with Adobe Illustrator or like.

I agree with the points you make here Bisc, but i have to admit that i enjoy alot of the recent anime as well as old school stuff. I have not finished Elfen Lied yet, but i'm enjoying it so far. Given that the gore and nudity is the area of focus, i thought the story is actually pretty decent..and the whole thing is deffinetly enjoyable, IMO.

I'm really enjoying Stand Alone Complex as well, but i'm also a big fan of the movie. If you don't like the movie, then the series naturally will disappoint.

Gunslinger Girl was excellent, IMO. Check that out if your looking for the more serious, mature themed anime.

I also enjoy goofy fun stuff like Full Metal Panic

..but that's all personal taste.

Appleseed and the Korean Wonderful Days both kick ass and feel like theatrical films.

I don't like the Rurouni Kenshin series much, but the OVAs are awesome.

I'm planning on watching Last Exile soon, looks pretty good IMO.

Overall i like modern anime, even if it is different from earlier material. (which i also love)

i prefer the new art work, can be detailed or can be very simple, i think the shows that are pumped out each week have to be simple but the shows that arnt released as much are a little detailed.

ive been read more manga, and anyone who reads berserk knows how detailed that is, but naruto is so simple. also berserk started out in the 80 so i guess the artist wants to keep his style the same.

the whole production line animations that make up the bulk of modern anime tv series are indeed very basic in their detail, but then the rate at which they pump these things out its very understandable. the mix of cgi and basic animation for characters as seen in appleseed takes a while to get used to, but its worth it
