DEADLY OUTLAW REKKA

Overview: Written by genuine criminals from the Japanese underground and directed by one of the masters of extreme eastern cinema, Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer), Deadly Outlaw Rekka is uncompromising Yakuza cinema at its best, featuring a stand-out performance from low-budget Japanese video star Riki Takeuchi (Big Man Japan, Battle Royale II).

Kunisada is on a violent and surreal road trip as he searches for those responsible for the death of his gang boss, but with a violent temper and a mouthy demeanour, he’s quick to find trouble with enemies and Yakuza allies alike. Can he track down and avenge his fallen master before he’s cut down by a bullet himself?

This expertly crafted tale of criminal vengeance and underworld betrayal is a master-class in crime film making, with a pounding Psych-Rock score from Japanese counter-culture heavies The Flower Travellin’ Band and a cool cameo from Kung Fu legend Sonny Chiba (Kill Bill, The Streetfighter).

SPECIAL FEATURES:
- Brand new transfer of the film with new and improved subtitle translation
- Original Trailer
- Video interview with director Takashi Miike
- Deadly Outlaw: Miike – Takashi Miike discusses key scenes from the film and working with his collaborators
- Booklet featuring stills and an essay on the film by Tom Mes, author of ‘Agitator: The Cinema of Takashi Miike’, notes on prog rockers Flower Travellin’ Band, stars and providers of the soundtrack to the film.

Damn, Arrow really is up there with Toei, HK Video and Criterion with their brilliant cover arts. Seen the film a loooooong time ago. No classic, but Miike + Takeuchi + bazooka = potential purchase if the quality is good.

Seen this years ago on MTV, but thought it was just shite. I also hate the main actor. I think he's crap.

This review suggests a standards conversion, assuming it really is PAL. Anyone know if Arrow has released NTSC transfers in the past? Eureka does it all the time, and many reviewers blindly bash them as standards conversions just because they're fooled by the running time...

that being said, the chances are Rekka is indeed a standards conversion.
