In my Excel listing I have half of the Japanese films by Japanese title and the rest by English title. Sometimes I forget which one I have used...

Me too. I tend to mix and match. For example Pedro Almodovar's Talk to Her and Bad Education are known in the English world under their English titles but Volver is only known by it's Spanish name (English "To return"). The same goes for Y Tu Mama Tambian of course. I've never seen it written in English ever.gasteropod wrote:Haha, with that one I prefer 'Miracles'but it's different with other things, I prefer Kairo to Pulse, for instance.
I think of films by their most common name but would too use Kairo over Pulse but that's because I knew of it by it's Japanese name way before it got an English release.
Remembering a Chinese film by a name I've literally never heard of would be far too confusing for me.

Re: How do you arrange your DVD/BD collection?
The vast majority of people who put their collections in some kind of order do so alphabetically.bradavon wrote:I don't know anyone who stores their DVDs/BDs/CDs in alphabetical order
What would you suggest? Colour coding? Barcodes?
Yes, but that's the Mandarin title for Miracles. If you want to be really pretentious you have to know the original language and go by that. Actually the original English title is Mr. Canton and Lady Rose. Miracles is the title of the dubbed export version. I list my HKL under Miracles because that's what it says on the case. Saves confusion.HungFist wrote:Arrange you films in alphabetical order by original title, and the respect goes through the roof

Agreed. No matter how you order, order by what's on the case. I could see it getting really confusing trying to find Miracles under J.
Is DVD Profiler not your bag?HungFist wrote:In my Excel listing I have half of the Japanese films by Japanese title and the rest by English title. Sometimes I forget which one I have used...

Re: How do you arrange your DVD/BD collection?
Tried a few of these and none of em work for me. Half of my dvds are not in these databases, so I would have to be adding titles to the database myself all the time. DVDAficionado doesn't show any of the technical detail, and some yellow mess (DVD profiler maybe?) didn't let me create proper categories when I tried. Too much work for sub-par quality. I'll just go for Excel and without tech details.bradavon wrote:Is DVD Profiler not your bag?

Yellow mess? DVD Profiler's not yellow. You can create categories in DVD Profiler I think but I wouldn't bother. A list is fine. DVD Profiler takes all the work out of it. I just add the UPC and it adds the rest, including cover art.
There is lots of rare stuff on DVD Profiler but maybe not rare enough for you. I'm unsure. It is more Western disc centric. Excel would be okay but it takes even more work to manage than DVD Profiler. It has no database to start with. You must have some mammoth spreadsheet there.

Re: How do you arrange your DVD/BD collection?
For movies, I have 3 bookcases:
1 English language movies
2 World (non Asian)
3 Asian
All films listed by Director in release order - unless it's a series of movies with different director (eg the 6 Star Wars movies, which are listed under Star Wars).
It's a very easy system and it works for me - believe me I've tried every other way over the years.
Example:
John McTiernan
- 1988 Die Hard
- 1995 Die Hard: With a Vengeance
Olivier Megaton
- 2008 Transporter 3
George Miller
- 1979 Mad Max
Monty Python Films
- 1975 Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Dir. Terry Gilliam & Terry Jones)
- 1979 Life of Brian (Dir. Terry Jones)
- 1982 Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl
- 1983 The Meaning of Life (Dir. Terry Jones & Terry Gilliam)
Naked Gun Films
- 1988 The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (Dir. David Zucker)
- 1991 The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (Dir. David Zucker)
- 1994 Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult (Dir. Peter Segal)
Chris Nahon
- 1999 Kiss of the Dragon
Mark Neveldine & Brian Taylor
- 2006 Crank
Easy quick, and it makes sense

Cheers, yeah I had a load by director before I did this change around, it's cool for certain directors I follow such as Wes Anderson, but others can be a bit spotty if I don't like all their films

Gas:
I'm just wondering why Hung chose my collection
I add stuff to Profiler as soon as I recieve it and, sometimes I take something away, if I get something new, I put that in its place (missing number) its much easier than arsing about reassigning everything.
It doesnt mean everything is laid out on the shelves exactly like Profiler.

I update DVD Profiler as soon as it arrives or is sold too. Fantastic Mr. Fox is okay but the book was a childhood favourite, so the book is meh in comparison.

I don't mean to diss your collection, I just think dvd profiler looks messy beyond belief. And I bet they don't have any of my fav films and TV shows in their database

Fair enough too. I think it's neatly laid out with enough info and cover art etc... A search field is needed, with some sort of advanced search. Having to use the browsers Find function isn't enough.
