How do you arrange your DVD/BD collection?
I'm currently going through my whole collection, choosing which ones I want to take to CEX to sell for 10p each etc. because I own far too many and it's pissing me off, and now it's stressing me out trying to think how to arrange my collection. By title? Director? Genre? Actor? And then there are certain things like Criterions and MoC's where I kind of want to group them together lol arghhhhh, and then there's the matter of BD and DVD cases not looking good together
How do you have yours?

Re: How do you arrange your DVD/BD collection?
By country or region (Japan / HK & China & Taiwan / Korea / Italian / Others)
--- by format (dvd / BD)
------ by sub-collection (HKL / Toei / Sonny Chiba, pinky violence, etc... / left-overs)
---------- within sub-collection no matter really. If enough titles, then try to repeat the previous phase, or just go by color... whatever looks good)
As long as you can find the film you're looking for it's all good. Alphabetical order is of course most logical, but usually looks bad in your shelf.
For me it works mostly. If I want to watch Red Peony Gambler I know where to look for: Japan --> DVD --> Toei DVDs --> yakuza movies. If I want to watch Dog Soldiers I may have to spend a moment looking for it because because I haven't separated non-Italian non-Asian movies other than cult classics / mainstream. So it's somewhere in the mainstream section...
Edit: I'm the grandmaster of typo. And not just typo. I'm forgetting entire words sentences (ok, that was intentional): Doooh

How many are you selling off? If it's over £75 worth at CEX then I'm willing to bet you may get a better offer from FilmVault.

Re: How do you arrange your DVD/BD collection?
The only hassle with filmvault is that they'll tell you to use very few boxes (probably one or two for a 100 film collection say) and you have to make sure they're padded out for their insurance purposes (which I find can be a pain). They have their own couriers who collect the boxes from your door so there's no shipping costs involved. CEX is naturally more convenient but then you're also limited to R2uk titles only whereas FilmVault will take pretty much anything off you from any region.
To give an idea of the extra cash you could end up with as well I sold off around 200 titles to them a few months back and at the time I compiled the list of titles to get rid I compared the prices I would get from Music Magpie, CEX and FIlmVault and the difference between the worst (Music Magpie) and the best offers (FIlmVault) was over £50 IIRC. In this case FilmVault were about £20-£30 better than CEX.

Cool, I had a look at their site and it sounds a good service, I'm not sure I'm ready to do something quite that big though, I think I'll take a carrier bag full at a time to CEX every so often or something. Thanks for the info though

Re: How do you arrange your DVD/BD collection?
Format obviously first. I'd never mix DVDs with BDs. That's just stupid.
Alphabetical is nice in theory but in practise just looks a mess. I mix and mash a bit. Basically some are by director (like Pedro Almodóvar) but most are by "type". So English language, European, Asian etc... I've also got action films in a section and all the HKLs together but that's the only one done by company.

Haha, I wouldn't go as far as to say mixing BD's with DVD's is 'stupid', but it doesn't look great.

OK, I've sorted out one carrier bag of stuff for tomorrow, calculated it all on the CEX website, and it's come to £81.20! I'm well chuffed with that.

With my Blus I just go alphabetical.
I used to do it by distributor, region, etc, but found that a bit pretentious.

I'd say alphabetical is more pretentious.

I think Brad's currently in an argumentative mood. Of course alphabetical isn't pretentious, it's the order that makes the most sense.

I don't know anyone who stores their DVDs/BDs/CDs in alphabetical order and no I'm not. Which granted means I've just argued with you

Alphabetical order is the easiest for finding the DVD/BD/CD you're looking for, I have my albums in alphabetical band order.

My CDs are Male and Female but they're old now. I've not bought a CD for ages.

Arrange you films in alphabetical order by original title, and the respect goes through the roof

To be honest Hung, that is another thing that stresses my poor OCD-esque mind, especially when a release is using a title I don't like (e.g. The Canton Godfather
)

Haha, with that one I prefer 'Miracles'
but it's different with other things, I prefer Kairo to Pulse, for instance.
